I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!

Moving Fast

April 3rd, 2009 @ 2:12 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

Miss Bruschetta’s post about her and Mr. B’s Apartmenticipation got me thinking about my cohabitational history with Mr. D. I’d always thought that before I was married I would have lived in several different cities (check), lived alone (could never afford it), finished my masters or had an established career (half check?). I thought I’d be almost 30 (about 5 years early on that one) and my future husband and I would move in together after the wedding/honeymoon (nope).

Why did I imagine all that? I don’t really know. I always try to create benchmarks, plans, and such. I think it’s just the planner in me. But, the funny thing about plans is that you’re constantly revising them, since life seldom consults your Excel sheets and goal charts before going about its business.

Does anyone remember the Friends episode where Rachel turns 30 and all the friends reminisce about their 30th birthdays, and Phoebe found out she was an entire year older than she thought she was? Life doesn’t wait for you to tell it what to do (or to tell it how old you are).

After our road trip, Mr. D and I were apart for another month and he agreed to come back and visit for a month in late May. While he could have rented a place in Miami, it would have been VERY expensive, and honestly, it just didn’t seem worth it.

Once Mr. D was here though, we just weren’t ready to be split up. So he changed his flight to give him almost the maximum time allowed by the Visa Waiver Program and stayed with me until late August.

So, now you have almost the whole story of the D’orsays. We met in March, went on a 10 day second date in April, moved in together in May, and got engaged in August. We move fast! :)

Anyone else on the fast track?

Wow, I guess when you know you just know. We definitely did things the long way (hello 2 year and 2 day engagment once we get married!) but I think its different for everyone. I have changed my life plan so much that at this point I don’t really have one, other than we’re waiting til I’m 30 or close to it to have kids and we may or may not stay in MD. I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up, although I do have to decide kinda fast since I get my degree in a year!!

Miss D’orsay, do you suppose the geographic constraints helped push your relationship along more quickly? My college roommate met her man while studying in England junior year, and soon after graduating, she was engaged!

We’re the same way. We met, moved in, started dating, got engaged, (still waiting for the proposal which will come in about two weeks!!). It’s all out of order. But it worked for us!!

We met, I was moving in three weeks, so we just kind of put everything out there, and you know what? Turns out we’re a perfect fit. We got engaged 5 weeks after we met, I moved back to move in with him, and we were married 7 months later. It’s been almost two months since the wedding. I’d sort of peiced together that you and Mr. D moved on the fast track as we did, and it’s sort of endeared you to me ;o) I think constraints of time and distance can definitely make things move faster.

My fiance and I are exactly the same and the cliche when you know, you KNOW just keeps ringing. We met in April, became “official” in July, engaged in January and getting married in September. Everything besides living together which we are keeping until we get married. It’s funny how life works.. I was also convince I’d get married around 30.. but I wouldn’t change it anymore :-)

@Miss Bruschetta: Maybe, but I think for us, it was much more of an “when you know, you know” situation. We’ve still waited a year to get married, so it’s fo realzzzzz <3

Not us! We’ll have been together almost a decade before we get hitched. But we knew after 4 months- I just didn’t think it would be appropriate to get married at 15 1/2, so we waited :)

Miss D, you and I are always on the same page. My Brit and I declared ourselves boyfriend and girlfriend the next morning (yeah, we moved THAT fast), moved in together by 5 months, and got engaged at 9 months. When we get married we’ll have been together for 3 years and living together for a looong time, and engaged for over 2 years. Things certainly have seemed to slow down! Also, I’m so sorry for your loss, I’m sure you’ll find a lovely and fitting way of incorporating your Nana into your ceremony. Take care!

I am so with you. I met my Aussie husband last September. I was living in the UK for work, he was living in Florence. We spent one weekend in London, the next weekend in Florence, one more weekend in New York. He returned to Australia for work in November, and I decided to follow. He met me in Canada in January to meet my family. We flew back to Australia together and got engaged a few hours after we arrived. We just got married this January. It’s a pretty crazy story, but like you said - when you know, you just know.

My fiance and I met last Aug. I live in Las Vegas, he is in Seattle! We see each other about every 2 weeks, 3 now that the wedding is getting closer. We were engaged by November and the wedding is this June! No cohabitating though…we are waiting. I think when you know, you know. Why wait? Def being an airplane ride apart helps speed things up though!

We sort of are… we moved in together at the same time that we started dating. We were coworkers and each needed a roommate. 2 apartments and 15 months later, we’re looking at houses and planning to marry in Sept.

Wow, Miss D! I didn’t realize you guys only met in March. However, I have an interesting little tidbit for you. Mr. G and I “knew” after three months together. Granted, we’ve waited almost 6 YEARS (yikes) to finally tie the knot…when you know, you know. Sometimes I wish we would’ve gotten married 5.5 years ago. Oh well!
