About Mrs. Bruschetta

The Long and Short of It

April 3rd, 2009 @ 8:24 am by Mrs. Bruschetta

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Just a few years ago, I had my own head of “down to there hair”. Freshman year in college, I decided to grow my usually shoulder-length locks for a worthy cause. Then, a few weeks before starting senior year, I kissed a sizable chunk of my tresses goodbye. The stylist pulled my hair back into a ponytail, grabbed a ruler and snipped through at the ten-inch mark. It was nerve-wracking and exhilarating all at once!

Then, she cleaned up the rough cut.

I snuck out to make my donation without telling any family, friends — or even Mr. Bruschetta! Surprisingly everyone with my new ’do was so much fun, and I loved the short style after a few years of something much longer.

So much so, in fact, that after college, I adopted an even shorter length, keeping my hair jawbone-length.

Even after our engagement, I clipped my locks one last time. But, I realized on my first dress-shopping outing that the wispy look wouldn’t work for my wedding day vision (especially considering that late August in Philly [hazy, hot and humid!] will mean frizzy, unpredictable strands and the definite need for an updo!), and sought to return to my roots (::wink wink::) with a style that’s slightly longer than shoulder-length.

I’ve been treating my locks lovingly — only occasionally blow-drying, and seeking to speed growth by taking a daily biotin vitamin — but still sometimes miss my shorter style!

Is the weather influencing your wedding day hairstyle?

Definitely! June in the south is hot, muggy, and has totally unpredictable rain showers! An updo is a must! And I’m definitely a short hair girl! Mr. CC wants me to keep it long though…we’ll see.

Oh yes….I’m so afraid of the humidity with my hair! I will ask for tons of frizz control! I’m doing half up/half down, because I want to see the length but not all in my face, you know?

Yeah. June weather, next to a lake… weather and wind must be accounted for! Plus, our “get away vehicle” is a boat, so keeping the tresses tamed is a must! Don’t need my hairstyle completely ruined before the reception! And I think just about every bride with short hair tries to grow their hair out for their wedding!

Oh, most definately. August/lake/wind I’m not predicting good things!! My hair will probably NOT move at all with the amount of hairspray they are going to have to use to keep it under control.

I am so torn! I’ve been planning to donate my hair early this summer, but I’ve just gotten engaged and I don’t know if I should keep it then hack it after the wedding (which will be May 2010), or keep growing it longer so when I cut it it’s still long enough to do stuff with… any thoughts?

Ditto Crab Cake. June in the south equals up-do! Especially since our ceremony/reception are all outdoors. I did just break down last weekend and have my growing locks (I have super thick hair) shaped up with some layers. MUCH better, and easier to work with on a daily basis.

I definitely had a moment a couple months after we got engaged where I was NOT about to let the wedding take over my whole life (including my short hairstyle) and I got it cut shorter than I ever have.

Just a couple weeks later I horribly regretted my decision to cut it so short and now I’m begging with it to grow long enough to put up before june!!

Yay for Locks of Love!! (Did you cry?? I cried when they snipped off my hair…but only after some old lady behind me said “Hunny if you won’t cry for it I will.”

Anyway, I’m changing my hair for the big day too! I’m going for bangs…so nervous because that makes a HUGE difference as to how you look! Hope all goes well…

It sure is! Hot, humid Jamaica forces me to have an updo. Not that I probably wouldn’t end up doing that anyway, but I still love the look of romantic, slightly wavy, toussled locks streaming behind me…

Then I remember that I have stick straight hair that not only doens’t know what the word “wavy” means, but also wouldn’t flow & rather would be stuck to my back.

:)

@MightySapphire: Have you had bangs before or are you getting them cut prior to the wedding? I did the same thing for my senior prom and ended up HATING IT. Not that you will, but just wanted to double check :) Then I was stuck with weird, growing out bangs for 4 months.

@kvp: I struggled with that decision too, since I’ve had both shorter and longer styles. I’m not letting it get TOO long — because that would drive me crazy (trust me, the “before” picture, where my hair is almost down to my waist, is kinda gross looking) — and if I decide to lose a few inches before the wedding, I totally can!

@MightySapphire: Nope, no tears. The salon was empty except for me, so maybe that helped keep me calm!

Dancing influenced my bridal hair choice. I made sure to have something whispy enough that if it fell a little while dancing that it did matter because it would make it evenmore tendril-y and romantic! Weather definitely affects my choices of upcoming bridesmaid hair! The ceremony is outside and I envision wind blowing my long hair in my face and sticking to my lipstick if I leave it down! Now that would be a charming picture!

I have had a fair amount of friends who decided to grow out their hair for the wedding, which led to an engagement full of comments like, “ugh, I can’t wait until the wedding so I can cut my hair!”

That said, I’m going to be a short hair bride. And it’ll be beautiful. And “me.”

Done and done. ;)

I envisioned a lovely, flowing mane of curled locks that would drift lovingly across my back…then realized that I will never be able to grow this frizz-puff of hair out any longer than just past my shoulders, and that I am getting married in Florida. Humidity isn’t nearly as bad there as it is here in Houston, but I do NOT trust my hair on my wedding day to not puff out like I stuck my finger in the electrical socket.
So. My hair will be up and secured very, very well. :)

I had a lot of friends who grew their hair out and donated it- most of them cried when they cut it though and had cutter’s remorse, but the next day they realized that it only takes 5 minutes to do their hair instead of 30-45 and ended up loving it.

Good luck growing your hair out, and just envision that glorious day after the wedding when you cut it all back off! :)

@MightySapphire: @Miss Quiche: you could also just go for a few wispy bangs at first! Kind of like training wheels, so you can see what the general idea would look like. If you don’t like them, they’ll just brush into the rest of your locks!

Good for you! And what a worthy cause. Did you see the posts with the short hairstyles yesterday? Any of those would look fabulous on you!

@JennyBryde: My hair’s ever-so-slightly past my shoulders right now…slowly growing, and probably going to be about this length for the wedding. So, I’ve got a bit to work with — stay tuned for a preview of my wedding day hair and makeup!

It’s as if men don’t exist in this thread. My DH loves mine long, and it’s not a big deal to please him. I don’t care about what other people think.
