Mrs. Bruschetta's Picture
Mrs. Bruschetta, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 25, Communication Professional Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapy Graduate Student Engagement Date: November 30, 2007 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: St. Thomas of Villanova Church & the F.U.E.L. House About Me: I’m a self-proclaimed grammar geek who loves singing (like, really belting it) in the car. My mister and I are planning a vibrant summer soiree celebrating our passions – including food and Philly – and when we make it official, we’ll have been together for eight years! Being super competitive is in my nature, and talking excessively is in my genes. I’ve got a terrible sense of direction, but can always easily find my way into Mr. Bruschetta’s arms.
About Mrs. Bruschetta

White Frothy Goodness

April 3rd, 2009 @ 2:38 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

I love a deliciously foamy cappuccino. I could easily lose myself in the luxuriously smooth texture, cloud-like layers, and sugary sweet embellishments.

And my favorite “baristas“? Jenny Lee, Junko Yoshioka, Priscilla of Boston, Melissa Sweet, Amsale…

~~~ See ya later, Mr. Bruschetta (and, any Bruschetta guests or wedding party members who don’t want to ruin the surprise!). ~~~
After our wedding planning moratorium (Christmas is crazy enough as is!), I scheduled several appointments at bridal salons in the Philly area. Along with Mama and Sister Bruschetta, we first visited The Bridal Garden in Marlton, NJ. We were already familiar with our consultant, Debbie, having worked with her when Sister Bruschetta was searching for her gown.
Unfortunately, Bridal Garden has a strict no pictures policy, and none of us was brazen enough to try and sneak snapshots. But, Sister Bruschetta took copious notes, and I was able to find some of the styles on the designers’ sites.
Since this was my first time trying on gowns, Debbie selected a variety of styles.
It didn’t take long, though, to realize I was drawn to mermaid/trumpet silhouettes. Three top contenders emerged from this visit:
Melissa Sweet’s Lia — Miss Kitten’s gown! I loved the unique shape, and the way the body-hugging design created curves on my decidedly not voluptuous figure.
Melissa Sweet’s Mila — Classic meets modern. It wasn’t my favorite, but something about this style was amazingly unforgettable.
This beautiful (but nameless!) Amsale — Mrs. Ladybug’s gown! Probably the most traditional of the three, I loved the super-sized brooch, and dreamy silk taffeta fabric.
Since I was clearly smitten with Melissa Sweet’s designs, the Bruschetta trio popped into Priscilla of Boston in Wynnewood, PA. We learned some helpful tips — if your skin has red tones, consider a white gown; if your coloring favors yellow tones, opt for ivory — and added a few new Melissa Sweet favorites to the list:
Jillian, which became Sister Bruschetta’s favorite gown (and is Miss Latte’s!).
Lilliana, a delightfully ruffly and girly confection of a gown.
Marina, which (okay, okay) wasn’t a trumpet silhouette, but had so much personality (and was deceptively light and airy!).
But I also realized that Mila, which had been playing second fiddle to the Lia gown, had vaulted to the top of my list. Admittedly, I was a bit freaked out by this — it felt much too early to have found “the one”. So, I persisted with my search, visiting Exquisite Bride in Princeton, NJ; Country Way Bridal in Cherry Hill, Suky in Bryn Mawr, PA; La Bella Moda in Conshohocken, PA; and The Wedding Shoppe in Wayne, PA. At each salon, I expressed my desire for a simple, trumpet-shaped gown, with little (if any) lace or rhinestones; instead, I requested the fabric of the gown — pleats, ruching, etc. — be the focal point. I tried on some amazingly beautiful gowns…
…and spent six months trying to find a gown to unseat Mila from its position as my favorite gown. Ultimately, I realized no gown I tried would measure up to Mila. When I felt satisfied with the lengthy search I’d conducted (in June 2008), I prepared to place my order. Before paying the deposit, I became a bit panicky, worrying I’d regret the slightly unconventional aspects of the Mila gown. Wouldn’t the Amsale be a “safer” selection? Which one did I ultimately choose? Lest you think I’m a copybee…
I trusted my instincts (and Mama Bruschetta’s advice), and can’t wait to wear Melissa Sweet’s Mila on my wedding day! (Note: In the picture, I’m wearing a tired and beat-up sample, not my Mila, which came in about a month ago — alterations start at the end of April!)
Did you find “the one” early on? Were you surprised by the style you ultimately selected?
Oh my gosh…. the Vineyard Piper is MY dress! It was maybe the 8th dress I tried on, and that was it! My mom and I went dress shopping when she came to visit me….even though my boyfriend hasnt proposed yet we thought we would just check out some styles and see what I liked….of course we had to find THE ONE!
I found my dress the first day I went shopping. It was an unworn (the tag wasn’t wrinkled, the color wasn’t dingy, the lace wasn’t frayed) sample that was being discontinued- so it was DEEPLY discounted. So discounted that I just couldn’t leave it- plus it was the only one I tried on that day that made my mom and I cry.
I love the dress- I can’t wait to see YOUR dress altered and on you!
I picture shopped on the internet for months after having fallen for jcrew’s Lucinda dress which was out of my budget. I kept coming back to it though…I fell hard. (I am having someone recreate it to save my achey-breaky heart.)
Ahhh I love the Mila it was my absolute favorite. But at 5″2 I just can’t pull of the dropped waist. It looks lovely on you. Can’t wait to see YOUR Mila.
@sarsk624: Thanks! I’m only 5′4″ though — I’m cheating in the picture by standing on the little riser thingy so the dress could hand properly. She’s going to need quite the hemming — or I’ll need tall, tall heels!
First of all, that dress looks amazing on you. Secondly, did you really get to try on all of those designer gowns? I am so jealous of the selection of everything wedding-related in Philly - especially the gowns! I wish some of that couture goodness would trickle over to us brides on the western side of PA!
Yes and Yes. Found mine a year in advance and chose a much sassier and unconventional style that I expected!
Yeah, I originally wanted something lacy and clingy with a lace up back but ended up going with a corset top and pick up waist with a zipper. totally not what I expected but when you know you know :)
Just curious - and maybe this is common - why the no-pictures policy?
I love your selection. You do look so happy in it!
@mary-alice-me: I had the same problem with the no pictures policy — the only thing I can think is they don’t want girls coming in and photoing it up in the dresses and then getting them made.
I eventually (after making sure!) bought the second dress I tried on. When you know, you know!
@mary-alice-me: Yup, they don’t want you to be able to copy designs — and while you could totally print out pictures from the designers’ sites, if you don’t have a picture, you don’t know how it’ll look on you!
Some places go so far as to rip out the tags so you don’t know what designer you’re wearing! I didn’t encounter this, though…and think it might actually not be legal!
I was definitely surprised the dress I ended up with… it is corset back and I said I never wanted a corst back… oh well, I love it now :)
Yep! I tried on my dress the first day I went shopping! It wasn’t what I thought I was looking for at all, and spent a couple of months trying on everything else I could think of. But I came back to it in the end…ah. True Love.
I don’t know HOW you chose, though, because all the dresses you tried are SO stunning!
I bought my dress the first day I went shopping. It was the 6th dress I tried on. I was planning on going with something modern, trumpet or mermaid, but fell in love with my dress - sweetheart neckline, crystals everywhere, and a royal train! It’s too much (in a good way). http://www.bellissimabridal.com/couture/oriana.html
You look AMAZING miss bruschetta! So happy for you.
