Going Dark…

April 6th, 2009 @ 4:38 pm by Mrs. Cheese

Alas, my beloved Canon Powershot SD1100, which I bought less than a year ago, has decided to stop loving me back. As of yesterday, all outdoor pics are horribly overexposed — to the point where they’re all white. Sigh. I’d so hoped to show you pictures of our backyard (aka ceremony site) where my honey has spruced up the trail with bee-yootiful gravel. Oh, and did I mention that we spent the weekend clearing loads (LOADS) of underbrush, freeing poor neglected shrubbery from crazy vines, and that OUR CEREMONY SITE WAS SUDDENLY AND FABULOUSLY AWASH IN PURPLE FLOWERS? Yea. And there were cute puppies rolling around in those fields of flowers, all for you.

Argh. The more I write about it, the more frustrated I get.

So, I’ll find other things to write about while I come up with a camera solution that hopefully doesn’t involve my buying a new one. With six weeks to go until our wedding, though, I can’t really afford to wait weeks to get my camera fixed under warranty.

ARGH!

Your turn. Are you dealing with unexpected expenses or other frustrations on this (for me, anyway, cold and dreary) Monday?

AKK!! So sorry to hear that….

yeah I got a 15% pay cut today…. def need to change the wedding plans!!

I had my camera die right before I went to Russia a few years ago–horrible.. I got a cheap fairly good quality one to hold me over that didn’t break the wallet!

Good luck! Can’t wait to see it!

Aw….maybe you can recreat the puppies and flowers. I bet your ceremony is going to be gorge! Plus it’s in a very personal place…and the price is right too, I bet! ;)

@JennyBryde: Yes, and no. Technically, there’s no ceremony fee… BUT we’re likely to spend at least a thousand dollars on rental equipment, landscaping, and the like. On the bright side, we get to enjoy all of that for more than one day!

Did you check the exposure compensation on the camera? Sometimes things can get bumped and cause the camera to go haywire. I’d recommend going to the camera menu and finding the option to reset everything to factory defaults, if you haven’t already, and see if that helps. It might not, but it’s simple and free and worth a try!

my camera did that on my trip to new york city…sadness.
i used my mum’s camera and then took the batteries out and in and it worked fine.

Yes! My esthetician (whom I absolutely love!) has Lyme’s disease :(… And she’s been a champ in dealing with it, but she’s on a new treatment, and will thus be unable to do my 2 remaining facials before my wedding. Of course I am bummed (and frantically searching for a new esthetician), but really, I am pretty cool with it, because I really, REALLY want her to feel fantastic, and if this is what has to happen for her to be better, then it is totally worth it!

I would double check that you didn’t change some of the settings on your camera. Can you check your manual to see how to reset it to the factory default settings? Or check that you didn’t dial up your exposure compensation, or you can dial it down to make up for it being overly bright.

Alas, my camera has done that too! On a gorgeous snowy day, the only one all year. Sob. It just upped a broke, too; no explanation or damage. If it turns out that there’s an underlying cause please let us know and I’ll try fixing mine too! Otherwise I’m worried I’ll have to buy a new one..

the warranties probably don’t take that long. My canon sd1000 broke and I sent it in to be fixed. It only took 3 weeks.

I would definitely call Canon! I hear their customer service is great. I need to call them myself…

$800+ medical procedures, and all the bills haven’t even come in yet. Egh. At least I have insurance, eh?

did you change the ISO setting on your camera? it might be on 1600 or “HI” setting which will overexpose the picture. I have a habit of leaving this setting on with my camera and had no idea why it was turning white.

Sorry :-(
I wasn’t feeling any frustrations but I know my FI was so frustrated booking our honeymoon yesterday (it’s nasty in NYC too). Everything is more than we want to spend but we have about 95% of it booked and he’s dandy now :-)

Thank you, all. I called Canon, and they do have great customer service. I can’t find my stupid receipt, which I put in a “safe place” — y’all know how that goes. AND, now that I’ve done a little bit of camera research, I am lusting after a better and more expensive camera. Argh!

LzzNYC - I think you’re right about the weather. It’s nasty and cold here too, and I’m grumpy!

Oh, and thanks y’all for mentioning resetting the camera. I did (as per the phone tech’s instructions) and it didn’t work. Poopy.
