About Miss Lovebird

Lash Envy

April 6th, 2009 @ 6:04 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

I always tell Mr. Lovebird that the only features of his that I am jealous of are his long, plush eyelashes. Albeit, his droop down naturally to cover his tiny Asian eyes, but if I had those puppies, I would certainly make them shine! The first things I notice about a person are their eyelashes. I’ve got crazy lash envy. Heck, I’m even especially jealous of babies who all seem to have more plush lashes than I do!

That being said, I always knew fake lashes were a must for my wedding day!

z168689

Now that the wedding is over, it doesn’t mean my lash envy has ended. I saw something on TV yesterday that piqued my interest, and I thought other lash-challenged ladies around the hive would find it interesting.

What is it you ask?

Well it’s Latisse™

z188954

It sounds like the answer to my prayers, but I won’t be making an appointment anytime soon, since I not one to jump on drugs just approved by the FDA. I thought it was just some new makeup the celebrities were endorsing, but it’s a full fledged prescription drug, only available through your doctor.

Still… it’s pretty interesting, no?

Fake lashes were a must for my wedding. Are you planning on using them too? Would you try this drug?

It sounds cool…but I’m a little worried I’d end up with strange eyebrows too, or other odd facial hair… :)

I work for a dermatologist (where you would get a rx for latisse) and it’s some pretty awesome stuff. If you’ve ever heard of Jan Marini’s eyelash intervention, it’s pretty much exactly the same thing.

Jan Marini (a smaller company)had an awesome prodcut in eyelas intervention, until Allergan (the company that distributes Botox) claimed they had the rights to the active ingredient in JM eyelash.

I would say they only downside to the product is the price/amount you get. The Rx costs around $120 and only lasts about 6 weeks. But my Dr. and a couple ladies in the office have been using it for a few months and it’s amazing! None of them have had any problems. I think I’m going to start using it a few months before my wedding (it takes about 6 weeks to see results)

Oh - and a helpful hint…there are more drops in the bottle than applicators…so save a few and wash them so you can resuse them later (We’re techinically not supposed to share that with patients)

I’m not entirely sure this is the same thing, but a receptionist at my work was telling me about a drug recently approved by the FDA for eyelash growth/coloration, but that she had been using the drug (it’s eyedrops actually?) because it had been perscribed as a treatment for something else, and one of the side effects was that your eyelashes grow more and become darker. She said that it was based on contact- so people who used these eyedrops would sometimes develop coloration around or under their eyes if the eyedrops didn’t completely go in! Again, not totally sure if it’s the same thing…but you might want to keep that in mind!

I’m using fake for the wedding, thanks to WBpro lo & co. For everyday I use mac prep and prime. It’s fantastic! I use that then, finish with mascara.

I’m definitely wearing falsies for my wedding. I wear them for any big occasion, so it’s nothing new.

If I had the money, I’d probably consider trying the Rx.

One of these has a side effect of turning blue/green/hazel eyes brown… if you already had brown eyes, I’d go for it, but no way would I trade in my hazel eyes!

Wiggler is right, Latisse can PERMANENTLY change the color of your eyes. It can also darken the pigment of the skin around your eyes (dark circles ahoy!). Scary stuff; I definitely prefer falsies!

Latisse is the same active ingredient/prescription as what is commonly used a glaucoma medicine. So in actuality, you can probably get this much cheaper if you can get a prescription for it by a medical doctor by its name of Bimatoprost Ophthalmic Solution (especially if your insurance has a prescription plan). Even if you don’t have an Rx plan, I believe it’ll run you about $60 for the cash price instead of $120. I have a friend who works for allergan and tested it out and she loved it. But it is something you have to keep using to maintain its effects.

Yeah, I take the glaucoma meds that have this side effect and I was like “for ONCE a GOOD side effect!”. My eyelashes are definitely much longer and darker now.

The drawback? I grow eyelashes in the corners of my eyes that need plucking, the growth is so fast that it causes bad itching on the lash line, the lashes sometimes grow downward, and the drops cause really bad dry eye.

funny thing, i had a patient the other day who was well into her 80s with these gorgeous full lashes. i finally made the connection when I saw her list of glaucoma meds. This stuff is essentially the same thing, repurposed to be a “beauty” med. I still think I’ll stick with false lashes though…

Eeek I don’t know… I see loads of glaucoma patients on this med who have thicker lashes because of it- but in my opinion, they’re not nice and long and thick… it’s more like lashes going every which way, and almost bushy looking! It’s also very true about darkening lighter colored eyes.

Anyone heard of semi-permanent lash extensions? I LOVED THEM! (for all of the 48 hours it lasted!!)
haha
I got it done at a spa, where the technician sticks lashes to each individual natural lash of mine…it’s supposed to last as long as your natural lash lasts since it is glued permanently…unfortunately, i wear glasses and we picked lashes that are too long so my lashes fell off after 2 days…i was so upset…but it looks really good while it lasted! So for all other girls out there w/o glasses, I’d definitely recommend it!!!

I’m a little apprehensive with drugs, however, as a natural blonde with barely any lashes help, I will definitely be going for false lashes!!

Try Revitalash - I bought it from Amazon last year and it works wonders. I did a good deal of research comparing Jane Marini reviews with the Revitalash reviews and chose the latter. Disclaimer- I already have long eyelashes, but they are light.

The Revitalash made my lashes a bit longer, thicker, and definitely darker after about 3 weeks use. Now I use it only once a week or so to maintain and still have the original bottle I bought - so it’s a good long term investment. Hope this helps!

I think I’ll use fake lashes. I’ve also heard about temporary lash extensions that last a a few weeks.

I saw this new mascara at ULTA that is supposed to lengthen your lashes. It was $150 though. Not sure I want to invest in that if I don’t know if it works or not.

the iris pigmentation is true. but darkening around the skin can be prevented by avoiding latisse contact with the skin. just be careful when applying so that the medication only touches your lash line and not your skin.

glaucoma pts have unruly eyelashes from latisse/lumigan b/c they put the drop in their eye and the medicine touches their lashes and other places, a somewhat uneven application. if you apply it evenly with the applicator the lashes will grow evenly and pretty.

I envy my FI’s absolutely long lashes too! I always tell him that I hope our kids get his lashes.

PS: I’m DEFINITELY down for some falsies on my big day!

@Shopaholica: i use revitalash, too! last fall, a lot of my eyelashes fell out — i think it was the mascara i was using, so i invested in revitaslash and i couldn’t be happier! in fact, my mom, sister, and aunt all bought some after seeing the results!

I’ve been on the hunt for wedding make up and I am not a make up girl! A girly girl for sure, just not a make up girl. Anyway, I just got a mascara from Lancome with a vibrating brush that makes my lashes look amazing! It’s called Oscillation, but I also start with the Cils Booster for extra emphasis. They are so long and so full you would swear I’ve got lash extensions! My lashes are actually pretty long and thick to begin with, but this stuff is just ridiculous! It opens my eyes up so much more and I feel like one of those adorable blinking baby dolls. I am addicted!

My mother was telling me about this from her “ladies lunch” group. Apparently they all use it and they all have to trim their lashes because they are so long. While I have some short lashes and love the idea, something that is meant for glaucoma patients and works by changing pressures in my eye? No, thanks. I’ve got this one set of eyes and I’m wary of putting superfluous medication in them.

I have heard so many bad things about this product in the makeup world that I have been completely turned off. There are some terrible side effects and it is expensive and you need a prescription… Which seems like a hassle to me. I have been using a cosmetic called Revitalash and seriously saw my lashes grow. If you are scarred of a drug, give Revitalash a try.

I also hear that Latisse caused discoloration around the eye area. Something we “Brides-to-be” defintely don’t need. My makeup artist (my wedding is in a couple of months) turned me on to Revitalash (she says a bunch of celebs use it). I’ve only used it for a week now, but am excited about the possibilities. I’ve read some great reviews. I’m hoping to be long and lush by the ‘big’ day…
