The Food Favors

April 6th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Glossy Mom volunteered to make homemade jam as favors! I’m super excited - I’ve always thought it would be a great idea, but I felt terrible asking someone to make allllll that jam. She picks all her berries wild, thereby making the BEST JAM EVER. She suggested it, and I jumped at the opportunity.

Obviously they have to have some sort of super cute label:

And then be tied with a swatch of fabric on top with a bit of twine:

One of the Glossy family friends also makes maple syrup. He has volunteered to boil some sap down for us to have as favors as well. I don’t want to overwhelm guests (or confuse them) with too many favors, so I think we’ll just put the syrup in the OOT bags.

Ah, the joys of outsourcing…

Are you considering food favors? What kind?

I just forwarded this entry to my mom asking “how do you feel about making 100 jars of jam for my wedding??”

Great idea!

Oh wow, that’s AWESOME!

We’re having madeleine cookies (made by me, the bride) and maybe (maybe) macarons, depending on the week before the wedding!

I thought about homemade jam for a wedding favor, but I don’t know who would make them or where I’d get them from. I’m thinking we’re going to go with candy apples. I too love the idea of edible favors! You’re so lucky to have all the connections!

@Emilydll My family is doing the same thing!!! I was so excited to see that someone else is planning a family made cookie buffet!

I am hunting for the best cookie jars. I want them all to be clear and I am planning on etching the glass, with a little help from Martha (http://www.marthastewart.com/goodthings/etched-glass-storage-jars?xsc=eml_crd_2009_03_03).

I CAN’T WAIT to see how it all turns out.

That’s awesome! Go Glossy Mom!! I thought about asking my mom to whip up Jam for favors until I found that I could buy them from a local orchard by the case (appox $1.58 a jar). So that is the route we are taking….with the fabric and twine tied on the tops of course ;)

We are having Mexican wedding cookies for favors. We plan to put them in little boxes with a twisted ribbon around. My FH is hispanic and my grandmother has made these cookies every year for Christmas….so yummy!

Yum yum! Edible favors are the best! What type of fabric are you using for the jam jar tops?

@Miss Red Head: I saw those etched jars on Martha about a week ago and fell in love!
I think those would be perfect!!!
I recently bought sticker labels from paper source and was going to have our calligrapher (in a whimsical font) make labels for each jar with the family members name and the kind of cookie they baked. :)

The jam and syrup sound delcious! One thing to think about, make sure you put the syrup in bottles of less than 3 oz if people are going to be flying, otherwise they won’t be able to take it on the plane with them unless they are checking luggage.

ooh your so lucky to have your mom make jam for favors!!! I would have loved to have that as a favor, but nobody knows how to make that stuff! So I am buying some madeleines I think. Edible favors are truly the best!
@kenziegirl: where did you get your recipe for madeleines are they hard to make?

My mom has been feeling left out so I thought I’d ask her to make some cookies for the favors. But I don’t know that she has the energy your mom has!! 100 jars!! WOW!

@ Labrador….the farm/orchard our’s is coming from isn’t too far from Athens. The labels aren’t the cutest in the world, but I think fabric toppers will dress them up nicely. If you want the contact info PM me.

Mmmm those are both great favors! FH and I thought about making BBQ sauce, since we love BBQing, but decided it was too much work :-/ We had a friend do jam for their wedding and advised us against it w/ everything else going on. I’m SUPER jealous Mama Gloss offered to do this for you!

my dad keeps bees, so one thought is to give away very wee jars of honey as part of our favor… small enough so folks can fly with them worry-free!

@ Miss Quiche: Um, drink favors? Those sound amazing!!
@ Miss Labrador: Candy apples sound delish, perfect for a fall wedding!
@ GGSB: Wow! What a great deal!
@ Bruschetta: Not sure yet, I think we might use a white muslin and a navy cotton, tied with super cute string.
@ Miss Mascara: GOOD call! I never even thought about that - does it matter if its over 3oz. if it’s checked?
@ Tea: we are debating having whoopie pies instead of wedding cake!
@ Erindesmar: YAY! We are doing strawberry and raspberry since the blueberries will won’t have been out for long enough yet.

@Miss Lab-I love the idea of candy apples, I wonder if caramel apples would work too
@Tea-whoopie pies are my favorite! I have the best recipe for them…I also love pumpkin & red velvet cake ones!

We were planning peach preserves, since I’m a Georgia gal. But, then I started worrying about jars breaking in suitcases. Now, we’re doing bags of homemade toasted pecans - it’s especially appropriate since we’re getting married in a pecan orchard.

We are using a local farmer to make honey favors in 4 oz hexagonal jars.

We’re using burlap for the fabric, twine/raffia for the string, and a packaging tab with “thanks” stamped on it.

A good site for buying small jars is Specialty Bottle.

I am planning on using food favors in the OOT bags. We have a local bee hive, so I am going to put small jars of honey in the bags. Also we have a local place that makes the best popcorn so I will be putting that in as well.

Ohhh Syrup has long been an idea for my Vermont wedding (yeah new England!). But I never considered having a family friend do it for us - that is so much more special. Love it!

@Vic004: I found the recipe on all recipes — they’re super easy, as long as you don’t overfill them!

I’m doing Sugared Curried Pecans. I made them at Christmas last year (after seeing the recipe in Real Simple) and EVERYONE loved them. They are easy, plus they can be made a month ahead and even frozen up to 4 months in advance! Plus, our wedding is in Texas, so pecans are perfect!

My wedding party and I got together to make 175 jars of apple jam. My FMIL does it all the time for herself and so I asked how she felt about scaling up. It was such a great time and I’m truly thankful to the ladies (moms included) for all their help.

I really like Christine Ferber jams with red-dotted fabric! So cute! I think they are still handmade in Alsace of France. Very fresh fruity! They’re expensive though…
