About Mrs. Bruschetta

Art Gallery

April 7th, 2009 @ 10:27 am by Mrs. Bruschetta

A few months into our engagement, I started getting a sinking feeling in my stomach: I realized I didn’t like the setting we had hastily selected. Admitting this to myself was tough; gathering the nerve to talk about it with Mr. Bruschetta was ridiculously challenging.

I’m already an over emotional little Bruschetta, so of course, halfway through the conversation, I was rendered incoherent by heaving sobs. I deeply regretted choosing a platinum style rather than a simpler (and much cheaper!) white gold design to act as a temporary setting. But, I also knew I wouldn’t be able to relax until we found a design that would accentuate (and not overwhelm) the Dream diamond.

Mr. Bruschetta was truly wonderful, agreeing on the aspects of the setting that bothered me, and silencing my self-deprecating comments (don’t forget — I’m actually the one who picked out the setting!). Together, we discussed what the ideal setting would look like — a prong, rather than cathedral, setting with a thinner band. But, after a visit to the jewelry store, we learned that my beloved Dream diamond posed a unique challenge: Its octagonal shape meant it could be twisted easily out of a prong setting, and so an “under gallery” was necessary to hold it firmly in place.

I combed websites searching for a gallery that wouldn’t obscure the diamond, but showcase it like I envisioned. Finally, I found a promising design from Ritani.

See the delicate pave design on the band? These little sparklers also adorn the gallery, offering protection for the diamond, but not sacrificing style.

We took the time to really think about this setting — no more jumping into hurried jewelry purchases! — and ultimately decided to buy it. It didn’t come in prior to our engagement session, so several shots feature the setting I’m no longer wearing.

Now for the bad news: We won’t recoup nearly enough of the cost of the first setting by selling it as scrap metal. If Mr. Bruschetta finds a Jeff Cooper wedding band he likes, we could exchange the setting to defray the cost of this purchase. But we also plan on pounding the pavement along Jewelers’ Row to see if we can find a retailer willing to discount a wedding band in exchange for the (very!) gently-used setting.

And, although I’m shopping around for a new camera, I did manage to capture a few shots of my engagement ring — a more classic setting paired with a (less traditional) square-shaped diamond. Hmmm… I’m sensing this diametrical theme taking hold on other elements of the Bruschetta wedding as well…

I can’t be the only indecisive bride out there. Did you opt for a second engagement setting? What’s your favorite aspect of your ring?

That ring is just so beautiful!

I’ve been trying to talk him into getting me a “new” engagement ring when we get married, as I won’t be able to wear our wedding band and the engagement ring on the same finger post wedding. My engagement ring didn’t break the bank, and the rings I’m looking at for a new engagement ring aren’t that crazy expensive either, but he doesn’t quite understand my fervent need for it. :)

I love my solitare princess cut diamond, but I had requested a thicker band and now 6 months later, I wish I had a thinner band. I haven’t said anything to my FI about it…yet. He spent so much time, energy and money for my perfect ring I can’t bare to tell him I wish the band were smaller!

@Miss Beagle: LOL — was wondering who’d be the first to notice. Mr. Bruschetta and I are big-time HP fans. ;-)

Aw man, got beat on the HP shout out. ^_^

I’m very satisfied with my ring (he picked it out all on his own, with a bit of help from his mom and sister), but man, I know there are just so many options out there it’s easy to get overwhelmed with choices! Love your choice! ^_^

I’m having issues with my ’second’ engagement ring, too. After he told me how much he wanted to spend, we picked out a very nice ring, but it wasn’t THE ring. I was afraid to try on anything nicer due to budget constraints.

Months later, I brought it up, asking if we could upgrade in a few years, for an anniversary or something. He said we should just upgrade now…

We went to the store last week, picked out a BEAUTIFUL ring, and waited for jeweler lady to call back to tell us if they could resize the ring to fit my small finger. Then I had second thoughts. This new ring costs too much! I felt guilty, even though he said he wanted to buy it. Now we are back at square one…

I love HP, but my fave shot is the fork. Fork. Hungry. Me. Lunch. Now.

I love your ring! And I love my ring, I could never change it, but I was in love with it from the moment I saw it. That doesn’t always happen though. I’m so glad you found a ring that you loved!

Oh I love your ring - but I’m a little biased because I have nearly the exact same Ritani setting! Just as a warning though - I’ve only had mine 9 months (it’s my second setting too, haha), and already I’ve lost one of the little pave diamonds! I’m not athletic, and my job consists of basically sitting at a computer all day, so apparently the Ritani settings are really, really delicate!

I’m glad you love your ring now - I think it’s important to feel connected. I loved my ring instantly but probably knowing that it was a heirloom was most touching.

@Cara: Thanks for the warning! I’ve had it about six months now, and definitely not been too gentle (oops!). Fortunately, I haven’t had any issues, but I’ll be mindful of this in the futute!

I know exactly how you feel! I talked to my fiance and he’s letting me reset the entire thing and get a custom setting. I love my first but it really wasn’t my ideal engagement ring choice. I just want to know that I love what I’ve got 25 years from now and not regret that I didn’t do something about it. So I think you’re really brave!

The new ring is beautiful! I don’t have my engagement ring yet, but I’m afraid that I’ll change my mind after a few months. The setting I want is super intricate and detailed and needs to be custom made…so I’m wondering if I should just get a simple ring instead, in case I change my mind.

I didn’t have second thoughts on the setting as much as the stone…but my Mr. said he wasn’t having it, too bad so sad for me!

I didn’t know I didn’t like my first setting, until I turned out to have a horrible reaction to the nickel in the white gold. Then we had to upgrade to platinum, which for budget reasons meant a much simpler setting. I was bummed at first, but when I got it back with the new setting, I turned out to love the way it showcased my diamond way better!

I completely understand where you are coming from. I faced a very similar situation, only in reverse: My then-fiancé and I first decided on a white-gold setting, but over time I started to regret our decision. As I researched more, I came to the conclusion that platinum would be a much better investment in the long run. Plus, platinum is much stronger than WG, so i feel very safe that my diamond is going to stay exactly where I want it… in the ring!
