STDs

April 7th, 2009 @ 2:52 pm by Mrs. Beagle

I didn’t know what an STD was before I started planning a wedding. In fact, Mr. B received a minor scare when I saved a file called “STD #1″ on his computer (oops, maybe I should have called it something else). In the beginning, I wasn’t going to make STDs. I thought they were a waste of time and money, but the more I perused the web, the more I began to see the necessity for them. It makes sense to notify your family and friends of such an important event. With all the time and effort that is put towards such an event, I wanted to make sure our family and friends would not miss out. I decided to create them myself, so I went to this crafting mecca and searched for my supplies.

I created a 5″x5″ page template in Microsoft Word, and created several trial layouts with different font styles, wordings, and colors. I trimmed the 12″x12″ ivory paper to 5″x10″ strips and started printing:

I trimmed each 5″x10″ strip to a 5″x5″ square and used a corner punch to create a design on each corner:

I then cut the purple cardstock into 5 3/4″ squares and pasted the ivory cardstock on top of the purple squares with glue strips, centering them with a ruler. I had originally planned to include magnets with an engagement photo and our website, but we won’t be taking engagement pics until next month, and I want to send these out soon. So I’m debating on whether or not I should make the STDs into magnets (by attaching magnet on the back of purple cardstock) or if I should include a separate smaller magnet with a similar design that has our wedding date and website on it.

What do you think? Are you making magnet STDs?

I’m not a big fan of the magnets. It’s great with a picture for relatives. I like to get them so I can enter them in my calender.

After that, its the recycling basket.

I love the magnets! A lot of people can stick them on their refrigerators and be constantly reminded of your wedding!!

I don’t think a magnet’s essential, but if you really want to add one to the package, I say go with the latter idea.

Um…hello beautiful corners!!! Paper punches at Michael’s are 40% off here in North Carolina. I’m loving my corner rounder so much right now. Is it weird that we get this excited over craft items?

I love the magnets. Everyone loves them and they have something to look at every time they go into the refrigerator. I love your corners…. Very pretty.

I hadn’t originally planned on Save the Dates either, but now I see where giving a heads up is pretty important in some cases.

I had that debate as well and decided not to put forth the effort for magnets. I had a feeling my family wouldn’t want them and would throw it away.

Some assurance for me was people use the Save the Dates to mark their calendars and will be reminded again with the invite. :)

I would vote to nix the magnets too.. they add on extra postage, and most people already have a slew of magnets on their fridge that they can already use.

When it comes to DIY wedding stuff, I think its easiest if you keep your efforts concentrated on where they’ll make the most impact and not worry about the minutia of it all… too much stress!

I did not think I wanted to spend money on STDs, but because our wedding is so close to the holidays, we have decided they are necessary. I found some cute postcards at savethedatemagic.com, so we will be able to save on postage.

Um, I knew what STDs were before I started planning a wedding, and even now that I know what “STD” means in weddingspeak I can’t help but flash back to 7th grade health class every time I hear or see it…

That aside, I’ll definitely be doing save-the-dates, and I want them to be super cool! Not sure exactly how it will manifest itself yet, but these are awesome tips. thanks!

We turned our STD’s which involved ‘moo cards’ into magnets by purchasing a big roll of self-adhesive magnets at Michaels.
I carefully cut the roll into small squares and so far everyone has said they love being able to hang our beautiful STD on their fridges.

I think you should include a separate smaller magnet. Cute STDs!

Hello Miss Beagle! I’m also an Austin bride who’s getting married in October! YEA!

Anyway, I wanted to use a picture for our STD magnets, but like you didn’t want to wait on those to send out the STDs. I ended up just making a design in Photoshop of our names and the dates and then attached a magnet to the back. I’m not really sure why the magnet was SO important to me, but hey - I’m the bride.

The postcard that I used to send out with them had a recent picture of us and told a little about the night he popped the question, but wasn’t a professional shot by any means. It still turned out nice, and I’m proud of them!

I wanted to do magnets, but didn’t due to cost. When talking to my friends about it they said while magnets are cute in the end they end up in the trash. I decided I’d rather that money go towards something my friends won’t toss after 9/21/09!

I love your corners though so pretty!!

I love how simple and elegant they are… and I too would nix the magnets, it an unnecessary expense :)

I like the magnets and I want to do them, if I can make them work into our budget.

I love your corner stamps too! I was just at Michaels yesterday and spent $28 on scrapbook stickers! It’s so easy to spend money there! Our venue…a historical mansion…has postcards you can buy from their online store…which I think we will use for our STDs!!!

Like sgarrison2, I have a newfound love of corner cutters after taking advantage of that Michael’s deal… Your STDs look great! I’d probably say the magnet isn’t a necessity, though.
As a side note, I can’t wait to see how an Austin bee’s wedding comes together!

@wiggler: I sent STD magnets and the postage was just normal first class postage.
