About Mrs. Joey

Vindication is Ours!

April 7th, 2009 @ 5:14 pm by Mrs. Joey

OK, that’s a little dramatic. I should say, “See, told you Mom!”

For someone who likes tradition, my Mom has been pretty open about our non-traditional choices. She tells me what she’d prefer, but doesn’t force me to change anything (except for the venue). When I told her about the invitation posters, she seemed really receptive. She loved the design, and was happy not to have to deal with RSVP cards.

Ah, but seeing and hearing are two different things. I don’t think she felt so receptive when she saw the posters. She pretended, though. Later she told me she thought they were a little too large, almost like concert posters. I don’t think she listened when I told her they were concert posters. After her comment, I doubted our decision on size. Maybe I should have made them smaller. D’oh!

Oh, but vindication is ours.

They are a hit! Mr. Joey’s mom loves them. I’ve gotten email after email about how amazing and unique they look. People even asked where I had them designed. So there, Mom! People like them! I like to forward her the notes of approval. She laughs and asks me who wrote these emails, and if they were drunk when they emailed me. It was all very funny until I threatened to give her invitation away!

Have you had any moments of vindication during your planning process, something you felt so strongly about that others weren’t so sure about?

Hehe, Mama Bruschetta’s way of admitting she actually likes something she didn’t think she would, like your mom’s comment, cracks me up: “It’s amazing what I can get used to.” ;-)

Im glad to hear that people love them! My mom told us we should just use the wedding money to buy a house…but I really want to be a bride with all the trimmings of flowers and dresses and such and we want this wedding to celebrate our marriage…so there mom! HEHE!

I have a feeling this is going to happen to me later on in the process. My dad thinks all of the decorations for the reception are unnecessary…but I think he’ll change his mind once he sees it all put together!

Your mom is too funny with the “were they drunk” comment! :)

I agree that your mom is funny … and she didn’t want you to take hers away! Sometimes it’s good to press ahead with what you want.

Glad they were a hit!

Our escort cards were “message in a bottle” to fit our nautical theme. Everyone was really skeptical, but then loved them!

Oh my gosh yes we did! My mom said having our appetizers (artichoke fritters) and signature cocktail (key lime martini from our first date restaurant) during our cocktail hour was “unnecessary” and “stupid @ 11:30 in the morning”. So my FI and I payed for them out of our little pockets.. Needless to say, the appetizers were gone in about 2.5 seconds and the martinis were the hit of the day! We love to give her a little bit of a hard time about it now - she fully admits how wrong she was! : )

We did too! Actually, I. My FI doesn’t care about themes or colors or anything at all as long as the food and drink are good. I am going full force forward then with some vintagy looking invites and all things stationery. I just don’t tell anyone what I’m doing because I don’t give it justice when I’m describing the process. They can all just see the finished work. :)

Haha…I totally had this experience. The chairs in our venue were totally fugly, and I wanted chair covers and something to “spruce up” the plain ivory linens (toppers or runners). My mom and then FI thought I was out of my mind. I basically begged them both and we ended up with runners and chair covers with no sash. I think they only agreed to that to shut me up, but the night before the wedding as we were setting up and they started to see the room totally change, they changed their minds.

My mom actually cried when she walked into our reception venue, she hated it so much (it was a converted warehouse). She went on about how it was filthy, ugly, blah blah blah. However, she did not have vision! She LOVED it when it was all set up. She admits she was wrong too. I’m so glad my husband pressed for the venue!

I haven’t had a moment like this so far, but I have a feeling it will definitely happen during our planning–probably more than once. My mom and I have very different tastes and ideas as far as what is important for our day, and I’m sure I’ll get an earful about at least a few of our ideas.

Wow, reading these posts gives me the courage to put my foot down about things I feel are important. My mom is a force to be reckoned with, but I really appreciate these “vindication stories”. Keep ‘em coming!

I think your poster invitation is awesome. I had a similar experience with my mom. She hated that I wanted to wear pink shows. The next month a magazine cover had a similar look.

i think it’s normal that our concepts/idea may not be as well-received as we’d imagine, but hey, if you like it, rock on!!

besides, maybe yr mom has more traditional ideas and so it takes a little while before she grows accustomed to your wedding ‘poster’ :)

@Miss Rye Bread: &@Miss Bruschetta: That’s a pretty normal response from my Mom. :)

Hah. Mom (and Dad) want me to go get married in some exotic beach locale. But, seeing as I wanted all of my friends and family included in this celebration, a destination wedding was out of the question. She’s starting to come around…now I just need to find “The Dress” to take her breathe away!

Not yet! Usually I concede to Mama Piglet’s wishes. The vindication is hers, because the decision usually makes sense in the end. :)
