In the Mail: Save the Dates…

April 8th, 2009 @ 12:03 pm by Mrs. Beagle

… finally! I am almost finished addressing these suckers and they will be in the mail this week! I bought the envelopes online. I had originally ordered a pretty cheap box of 100 ivory envelopes for about $15 (I can’t remember the source at the moment), but when they came in, they were thinner than I wanted them to be. So I ordered more, from PaperSource. In this case, price = quality. I think I paid $4.50/10 envelopes (I ordered about $25 worth). In the end, I wasn’t able to send every save the date in a PaperSource envelope, but now I know where to order my envelopes for next time.

Here are the PaperSource envelopes, neatly packaged:

In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 3419040
I had thought about just printing addresses on the envelopes (easy right?), but then I saw how nice calligraphy (more like writing with a calligraphy pen) looks. So, I decided that maybe I could address them myself using a calligraphy pen. I narrowed it down to three different types:

Pen w/ non-replaceable ink:

In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates Dd Cali source

Pen w/ replaceable ink:

In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 1010129 source

Dip pen w/ bottled ink (traditional calligraphy pen):

In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 41yqdxi source

Unfortunately, instead of researching these different options beforehand, I ended up buying one of each and trying them out! :) I found option 3 difficult to use (I think this option requires lots of patience and practice… I didn’t have enough time for either), so that left me with options 1 & 2. Between the two, I liked option 2 the best, because there was the option of different ink colors, and there was also a good selection of pen tips (from skinny to fat) to choose from. I was able to address (including the return address) almost all of our save the dates using one ink vial. (Not too bad!) I ended up buying a calligraphy kit that included several ink colors and three different pen tips. I figured if the save the dates went smoothly, that I would be able to use these for our invitations as well (and for any future event that requires pretty writing).

And now for the finished product:

In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 3418975 In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 341897501 In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 3419783 In the Mail: Save the Dates... : wedding save the dates 341978301
As much as I like to think that I can write in straight lines, I just can’t. So I drew light lines on the envelopes before writing the addresses, then I used a good eraser to remove them. I noticed that the lines were easier to erase on the better quality envelopes than on the cheap ones (so I guess it pays to buy the better quality when it comes to envelopes. This is something I hadn’t considered prior to “save the dates”, or the wedding, for that matter). I also realized that addressing takes a lot longer than it looked. It took me two Saturday afternoons to finish these (about 50 envelopes) up. So that’s good to know for next time! :)

I did mine by hand but sadly have no tips to share except to have extra envelopes or postcards in case you mess up.

Oh wow. That’s a fabulous job, and I love the pictures.

I have total crap handwriting and tried to learn calligraphy when younger, with no success! I have a plan for hand addressing my invitations, but to be shared later :)

I’m really glad you made this post! I went to michael’s the other week and found those three calligraphy pen options too and didn’t know what to choose! I bought the type of pen that has the ink in it and did not like it so much- I think it was mostly the pen tip I did not like, actually. I may just give the replaceble ink pens a try now that you blogged on it! I want to do my own calligraphy too:)

Wow! Your handwriting is beautiful! I definitely wouldn’t hire a calligrapher if I could write that well!
Did you see the tool that one of the other Bee’s posted about to help you write straight? It is basically a ruler, so you can line it up on the page, but it has these little wire loops at the top of the ruler so that you can go beneath the line for your “y’s” and “g’s” and ‘j’s” and other letters. You might want to consider that if you write out your invitation envelopes as well!
I love your stamps.

You did a great job! I’m not sure if I’m going to address by hand or go for printing on wrap around labels. I may try doing calligraphy for the invitations.

Thanks everyone!

@Miss Burgundy: Yeah the lack of variety in pen tips is the main reason I went with option #2. I also like that it provides more of an “inked” look, rather than a “marker” look.

@BeachBrideT: I did read that post, but it was after I had finished the addresses. I might look into getting one for the invites. :)

Looks fab, great job! I used the Sheaffer pens, too! Worked like a charm. :)

If you get a piece of cardboard and write straight lines on it with a dark marker, you can slide that into the envelope and follow the lines to write straight. This obviously would only work with lighter colored envelopes.

Wow - you have great handwriting! The time you put into the addresses definitely paid off, imho.

I think there was one bee who suggested printing a page with thick straight lines on it and putting it in the envelope and (if your envelope is thin enough) you can see through and use it as a template for straight lines. Then you would just pull out that second sheet and keep using it as your template.

Your STDs look great!

Those look amazingly professional! Fabulous job!

For some weird reason, I LOVE addressing envelopes - it’s very zen and soothing. I think it’s because I am a little obsessed with my own handwriting. But even just writing neatly, not aiming for straight lines or crazy beautiful calligraphy or anything - it does take up a lot more time than you think!

Wow! Those look professional. This is inspiring. I used computer printed addresses for my the STD’s but know I can’t do that for the actual invites. If I just practice my writing and get the pens you suggested, maybe I can have beautiful “calligraphy” on my envelopes too.

I’m going to use the WB DIY tip from the post where they used a printer to print the addresses then used a calligraphy pen to cover the printed addees. Because I don’t think I’d have the BEAUTIFUL handwriting you have!! Those are so gorgeous!

Beautiful! I totally did the same thing with buying all different types of calligraphy pens and trying them out. I’m also hand addressing my STDs! I was wondering what size nib you used for the one’s pictured above? I used the 1.5 and thought it was a little big.
