About Miss Labrador

So, I had originally planned to dedicate this post to finding our wedding colors with your help. But after spending a few hours brainstorming at my one of my bridesmaids’ houses along with another BM, I have not only found our colors, but also some choices for their dresses. Thank you Ashley and Brittany!

Color Palette Made Here

Here they are! We’re going with shimmery deep chocolate (the color shown doesn’t do it justice), taupes, champagne-brown hues, and a deep red. It’s hard to really show it online, but I think the pictures of the BM dresses will help get the point across. We’ll be using the brown colors as the main hues for the BM dresses and my dress sash. The red will be used as an accent in the flowers, on the men’s ties, and in some decor.

As for the BM dresses, I found some Jim Hjelm designs (my fave bridal designer) that I absolutely loved a while back. But I put them in the back of my head because they are a little pricey, and didn’t want to put my girls in an awkward position of possibly not being able to afford them. But after receiving a catalog from Jim Hjelm today and showing the girls the dresses, they both agreed that they loved them, and have more than enough time to save for them (the dresses average around $210-$250). We haven’t decided on long or short dresses, but we’ve picked out a few style choices with our wedding color combo. We wrote down the pros and cons for having long and short dresses, so once we see them in person, it’ll be easier to make a decision if we haven’t by then.

Here goes!

This is one of my favorites. I love the pockets, and they would fit loose enough for the girls to dance in!

Style JH5818

This is like a short version of the previous dress, and is Brittany’s favorite.

Style JH5863T

When I first saw this, I thought it was a long dress. I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed it’s short! This was Ashley’s fave.

Style JH5808T

I also liked this dress just because of the color combo. It looks so classy.

Style JH5701T

Photo Sources

All of these dresses have different versions of each (different top styles like V-necks or being strapless, or different color combos, etc.).

Which dress do you like best?

I LOVE Jim Hjelm.
Style JH5863T is my favorite….any idea how much their BM dresses cost? I just assume that since their bridal gowns are so much that the BMs would be comparatively $$$.

I too love Jim Hjelm. I like either the 2nd dress (2 toned short) or the absolute last dress. These *maybe* can be worn again.

The last two make me swoon!! I am torn because I love love love the bow on the last one, but love the cut of the straps and neckline on the other! Your chocolately scheme will be so nice for a fall wedding. Now I need to go make some cocoa!

@Gerbera: When I’ve priced them out, it’s around $230-280…but some places will discount an order of multiple dresses!

My fav is the second and third! :) I think they both would be flattering on different body types.
My girls just ordered their Jim Hjelm bridesmaid dresses this week! Fortunately the boutique where I bought my dress gave them all 20% off which was a nice surprise!

As someone who has worn the last dress in a recent wedding, I caution you. The construction and fabric were really cheap, fits really awkwardly through the hips and the proportions were way off for the sizes that were ordered. I was really disappointed with it for the $200 i spent. Try and take your largest bm with you try on any of the dresses. Just a head’s up.

first or second

i’m not a fan of the below-the-knee-above-the-shin length. i think it chops the leg off and dwarfs everyone. it’s definitely a personal taste/decision though.

you can’t really go wrong with Jim Hjelm and in my opinion you can NEVER go wrong with dresses that have pockets!

The third bridesmaid dress is what my girls are wearing! I am so excited to see it posted here :) My bridesmaids LOVE this dress. It is super flattering on all body types, and the back is oh-so-cute. I ordered mine in soft pink with an ivory sash, and they came out beautifully. The sample dress comes in your colors, too, so you’d be able to see how it’d actually look on your girls before ordering!

I was just in a wedding in February and we chose from those dresses in those colors too (I actually wore the last one you pictured).

A word of caution, however . . . I loved the dresses when she showed us online but I thought they were kind of cheap looking in person. The material was really thin and wrinkled easily. I had to get the dress altered and when pinning the dress we found out the seams were totally uneven.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade, I just wish someone had told us before we spent all that money.

Definitely #2 or #3. To save money, you could try the no-frills program at RK Bridal, where your girls fax in their measurements and RK ships the dresses to their homes. The past two times I’ve been a BM, we used RK and saved so much $ this way. I just checked RK’s web site and it doesn’t look like they carry Jim Hjelm, but I’ve been told that you should always call them, anyway, because they may be able to find something. Good luck!

I like the second and third ones best. Have you considered letting them choose which one they want, and keep either all long or all short? I think having different dresses in the same color looks great, my girls were going to do that but all ended up getting the same dress

Just as an FYI, I actually got a great deal on my Jim Hjelm BM dresses when I ordered from Storybook Bridal in Coeur d’Alene, ID (an authorized JH dealer). Definitely less than $200 with free shipping for a style similar to #2. We tried on the dress at a store local in Chicago and then called in our order. They arrived quickly and no quality issues.

I selected Priscilla of Boston for my bridesmaids dresses - color LATTE. Go to their website and search on style #s 1507, #1414, #1413, #1211. All of my girls picked style #1414. They love these dresses because they will be able to wear them again. Most bridesmaids dresses are similar to prom dresses - too dressy, but these priscilla dresses are very classy and sophisticated and can easily be dressed down or up. They are super cheap too and of great quality. I believe your girls get 10 or 15% off if you decided to order through them. You are going to love the color latte.

Jim hjelm has very nice dresses as well, but your bridesmaids will never be able to wear the dresses again. Check out the site.

Good luck!

Make sure to try the dresses on the BMs first. My sister picked a similar color scheme, but any brownish shade lighter than chocolate was highly unflattering for our skin tone.

I’m a light skinned Caucasian with yellow undertones.

I tried on the first dress for a friend’s wedding. I’m a pretty small girl, but the pleating in the front made me look much larger!

@Miss Peep Toe: I thought about that but it was just too much of a hassle. I wanted the girls to choose different style neck lines but it just wasn’t working out for us. :( I think it’s best to do that sort of thing with a place like David’s Bridal where they’re more prepared with complimentary options. But I just couldn’t find anything I was looking for there.

@notsojenny: Yeah, I feel the same. But we could always have them altered to a slighty shorter length!

@jennred782: Haha, there’s a tie in the back so it’s no problem. As long as it’s fitted correctly!

@cfitz621: No raining at all! That’s what blogging is for: FEEDBACK! We’ve only tried on a couple of the styles and I thought they were great, but the last one pictured does look like cheaper material now that you mention it!

@phruphru: I’ll definitely check that out! Thanks!

@Shanktuck: Thanks for the tip! I love finding bargains!!!

@Dena: Thanks for the tip! I’m hoping that they would wear these styles again (maybe not the last one but it’s not really a forerunner anyways). Even the last one could be altered to a shorter dress if they wanted. I mean, I would wear these dresses again! I’m getting ready to check the ones you recommended out and will let you know that I think!

@liz: Will definitely do that! My girls run from super pale white to light skinned black to a darker skin tone black, so it’s important that they ALL look good!
