About Mrs. Stiletto

Come On, Show Me Some Stem…

April 9th, 2009 @ 4:36 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

While I may be concerned about the flowers going into my bouquet, I’m just as concerned about the bouquet’s “down there”. That’s right, ladies and gents, I’m obsessed with stem. A too small stem is a little bit stingy, and if it’s too big to grip with one hand, then it is just slightly over-the-top in my book. I want my bouquet to be just right.

I’m planning a full-blown post later about the details my bouquet will have, but one element I will share is Mrs. Lovebug’s typewriter key adornments. I had been inspired by Mrs. Lovebug’s theme very early on, and had hoped to do a full vintage typewriter theme, but as planning has proceeded, the L-O-V-E on the bouquet is the only detail that has remained. And I love it to pieces.

Like I said, I’m a wee bit obsessed with stem. And I like to see it. Bouquets where the stem is completely covered just don’t do it for me. Of course, to each her own! I’m sure this is the look that many ladies are after, but not this lady. I want to see just the right amount of stem.

I love the simplicity of this bouquet’s stem, and to me it’s just the perfect size to easily tote around on the wedding day.

As far as stems go, this is probably as big as I would want it to be. This bouquet also scores some points because I’m still trying to decide what flowers will make up my “all white with a touch of green” look. This bouquet is very wildflower chic.

This bouquet’s stem feels almost rustic. It seems like this amount of ribbon would be the very, very minimum I’d be able to have in order to spell out L-O-V-E, but still allow for plenty of stem peepin’ through.

Am I just a little too focused on this silly little detail? Possibly. But there’s just something so aesthetically pleasing about the perfect bouquet… from top to bottom! I’ve allocated almost a quarter of my small floral budget for a perfectly lush bouquet, and I’m going to love every minute of it - from the moment they place it in my hand, to the end of the night where they have to pry it away. Why? Because I’ll never have the opportunity again to be so extravagant and run around with a pricey allotment of my favorite flowers and then, to top it all off, toss said flowers at a grabby group of ladies in formal wear. Score! I simply can’t wait.

Are you paying attention to detail when it comes to your bouquet’s stem? What will it look like?

I agree with you. There is something about the right look. I too love the look of stems peeping out the bottom and having it look just right. The little typewriter letters are beautiful too :)

So you are going to throw your own bouquet to the girls? I remember at my sister’s wedding she had a smaller version made up. I also came across this idea not too long back….a break-away bouquet. The little bouquets are bound together with ribbon and no one knows until you throw it over your shoulder and 3-4 little bundles go flying through the air! Such a surprise to the girls :)

@Curlysue:
I love the breakaway bouquet idea, thanks for the link!

And no, I must clarify…I will not be parting with my own bouquet for the toss, I’ll have a smaller one made up :)

I can’t wait to see how you manage the stems on your bouquet. I’ve just started to think about mine. I like seeing some green on the stem!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is picky about this detail! I don’t like it when it looks like the flowers were just bunched together with their full stem length. Too much! I like bouquets even a half inch to inch short to the ones above. And exposed stem is a also a must!

I saw Mrs. Lovebug’s typewriter inspiration days after I got engaged and really wanted to do something similar. Alas, I think the only thing sticking is the L-O-V-E bouquet. It’s just perfect for who I am. In fact, I haven’t given a second thought to my flowers except for that detail :)

I love perfectly wrapped stems! Ours will be swathed in satin ribbon and dotted with pearls. sigh…

I’m struggling right now to figure out where to find great ribbon for the handle wraps of mine and my BMs — any ideas, Miss Stiletto? I’m not pleased with the limited selection in my local Michael’s or A.C. Moore!

Thanks for posting this, I could probably put some more attention to that area! ;) I know you will have a really awesome stem, whatever you choose!

I agree, that huge stems just look too big and uncomfortable to lug around…teenie stems look flimsy. Hmm….the perfect stem…what an ellusive little devil…

I don’t know about those sizes. I think they look a tad, umm… phalic? lol I think if its that size you must have, at least get ones with the stems showing out the bottom, so it still looks like bouquet stems and not like something else! :-)

Yes, I am an advocate of the peeping stem. No tussy mussy or fully wrapped for me either :)

I like the last one with the R on the ribbon. I’m going to be placing a pin from my grandmother…who is sadly no longer with us…on my stem. Her name was…Marie, which is my middle name! She was my dad’s mother…I’ve asked my mom to find something of her mothers but she hasnt come up with anything yet so Im thinking of getting one of those mini picture frame charms to put her picture with me.

I’ve decided from the very beginning that I was going to do aqua ribbon down there for the bridesmaids…but then I thought, what about brown ribbon? So who knows. I just know I’m going to have their first initial ironed on to whatever colored ribbon so they know which bouquet is theirs!

I like some peeping stems too!

I love the white with a touch of green idea for the bouquet. I would love a bouquet made up of just Lillies of the Valley!

@Miss Bruschetta:
Check out Etsy (shower, I know. Me?! Recommend Etsy?! :) ) - if you search under “supplies” or whatever they call it, tons of great ribbon!

X’s & O’s to you Miss Stiletto for the white roses and thistle bouquet image - I’ve been hunting for bouquets using thistle to show my florist - it’s not something that she’s ever put in a bouquet before so it’s a totally foreign concept for her!
