Homemade Centerpieces & Lighting

April 9th, 2009 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Labrador

I’ve decided that I’m going to make our centerpieces a DIY project. I’m just not big on floral arrangements because quite frankly, flowers die. Of course, if we had an unlimited budget, I’d be more for elaborate floral arrangements in a heartbeat.

So my idea for the centerpieces is to focus on mood lighting. I’d like a soft, romantic feel to the reception hall. And since I have a slight love for vintage/antique items, I think I’ve found my choice for the focal point for the tables. We’ll be doing a combination of lanterns, tea lights, floating candles, candelabras, and submerged flowers (preferably orchids).

Every other table will have either the lantern surrounded by tea lights, the floating candles and submerged flowers in mason jars, or a vintage-style candelabra to keep with the Southern theme.

One of the clear perks of making my own centerpieces is getting to keep my creations after the wedding. I will be able to use them as home decor, or even dress them up as gifts for friends! Not to mention, I’ll save money on the floral bill.

Here are some pictures of the items I have my eye on:

These are the main lanterns I’d like to use for the reception site. I can get enough of these to decorate the whole space for less than $100! They’ll look super cute after the wedding as indoor and/or outdoor decor for our home.

I love the nostalgia of mason jars. The submerged flowers will be in mason jars, as well as tea lights and/or floating candles. I might do ribbons in our colors like this:

In a perfect world, I’d be able to catch fireflies to display in some of the jars like this. I also love the tea lights around the jar. They’re simple, but enchanting.

Here’s what I’m talking about in regards to the submerged orchids and floating candles. Just imagine these in mason jars.

I found battery operated LED paper lanterns online for only $5 a piece. I’m going to scatter these along the ceiling of the hall to complement the mini lights already at the reception site. Here’s an idea of what it’ll look like (but we’ll have far fewer lanterns):

I absolutely LOVE fancy chandeliers. But since it would be outrageously expensive to buy and install some, we’ll do the next best thing: we’ll create elaborate candelabras dripping with crystals! This will be a very cheap DIY compared to buying them. I can spray paint the candelabra and attach the crystals (sold a dime a dozen online) myself. Anyone who knows me knows I have to have some “glitter & sparkle” somewhere in the reception, so this will be it!

This one is only $14 on eBay! I might not have to make them after all! How adorable is this?!?

Last but not least, I want to incorporate my favorite pattern, damask, on the tables. Instead of doing it in black and white, we’ll probably have the pattern in gold or bronze tones to go along with our color scheme and to add a little class to the otherwise very laid-back decor.

I know that it seems like a lot, but it’ll basically allow for about 3 different table themes throughout the room instead of cookie cutters of one style. I like the idea of mismatched, but still complementary, decor for different tables (it’ll kind of echo the look of the bridesmaids’ different dresses).

Do you plan on dressing your tables up differently, rather than having all the same centerpieces? What will they look like?

Yes! I’m with you on complementary, but not necessarily matching tables! Mr. P’s mom is an antiques dealer and has a bunch of vintage silver ice buckets and containers that we’ll use to hold the flowers. Same for candlesticks and maybe some candelabras.

Lanterns-love! Mason jars-love! Candelabras-love! My sister did the paper lanterns overhead and there were additional tiny white lights in the reception and the warm glow was perfect!

I guess I always thought the centerpieces needed to match, but you provided some great ideas to change them around a bit so it’s not cookie-cutter. Great idea Miss L. :)

We’re also doing the non uniform thing. We’re having some tables with just candles, some tables with potted herbs, and some tables with flowers.

Do you mind me asking where you found the paper lanterns so cheap? I need a bunch for my ‘bridal dinner’. :)

You are a girl after my own heart. I plan on using those same lanterns from Jamali Gardens and Tea Lights in mason jars

Wow - you just described my centerpieces (sans candelabras!). We’re having lanterns, tea lights, and damask table runners alternating with flowers in a mason jar vase, tea lights, and damask table runners! Good taste : )

i love candelabras & am planning on putting them on half my tables! my reception site is very tall (an old theatre) so i’m planning on using tall greenery centerpieces on the other half the tables.

great ideas! :)

I’m curious where you found your lanterns for that price. My fiance and I are already using LED’s for lighting our jars and walkways, and wanted to do the same with lanterns overhead (outdoor reception at my parents house). The less soldering I have to do, the better :D

wow. I was thinking about the exact same diy trio.. .lanterns, submerged orchids, and tea lights. I LOVE the submerged orchids and I think they can be assembled easily. I am using yellow orchids and luckily my venue has lanterns hanging from the ceiling already so the whole thing will tie nicely together. good luck.. I am eager to see the finished products.

Not sure where all of our bees are from ( we’re in NYC) but we found lanterns and glass vases similarly priced in all shapes and sizes in Chinatown.

We’re doing a frog bowl vase with floating candles alongside floating mini-flowers we found at Ikea. There will be river rock in earth tones on the bottoms of the vases and along the table. We’re also scattering yellow rose petals along our green table runners.

If you’re doing the crystals yourself, I read on someone else’s - how to- that they got a crystal looking beaded curtain and cut it up. They were pre-strung and saved a lot of time.

I hear ya on the floral centerpiece issue. We decided on lanterns for our coastal wedding - http://www.fussellwhiteside.com/wedding/blog/2009/02/give-center-piece-a-chance/

We also have paper ceiling lanterns to group over the dance floor … but we paid more than $5 per. Good find!

I’ve got 15 white LED lanterns for sale, leftover from my 10/2008 wedding. They are priced at $3.00 each, plus shipping to your location. They are 8″ in diameter and stand about 10″ tall.

If you are interested, send me a PM or email to cpastrick [at] gmail [dot] com!

I love the submerged flowers with the floating candle on top…and I was thinking of going this root except that we are having an afternoon wedding. So I dont think the candles would get the same effect as having the lights turned down at night time. And also we have a four hour open bar…and I dont want a fire on my wedding day at my wedding!

Great ideas!! We put various mini framed photos of us as kids on the tables since we didn’t do a slideshow. They were conversation pieces for the tables as well as an extra favor.

Ps I love that you are going to have a different centerpiece on every table. And I love each of the ideas. But now that we arent doing the candle idea…Im just not sure what I want! And like you said I wanted to DIY so we could give them away as gifts to people at the tables…can you get the vases from the florist and keep them or do they usually take them back? I guess it would be an extra price if you want to keep them!

I love all of these ideas (except for the trapped fireflies — although I don’t think you’re serious about that!). The lanterns would be awesome to use, down the road, in your backyard or as housewarming presents for friends, family, etc.

@Miss Perfume: That’s going to look so pretty! Can’t wait for the recaps on those!

@Curlysue: Thanks! I can’t wait to get some samples done to see how they look and share with everyone!

@Emilydll: I’m using my work computer right now so I don’t have the bookmarked link. As soon as I find it, I’ll post it for those who want to know! Promise!

@liz: Ah! Genius! Thank you!!!

@NiceWedding: Those are gorgeous! I’m glad to see lanterns looking so nice at a wedding!

@D.Marie: Haha, I hear ya on the open bar + open flames. I’m a bit worried about that as well…. And I’m not sure about the vases. I bet many florists offer the choice of keeping them at an extra cost.

@MaPo: Cute idea!

@phruphru: Yup, not serious about the fireflys, but they do look pretty.

Love it! Love it! Love it! Just a few days ago I starting thinking about using candle lanterns as center pieces, as I’m not really sold on the idea of having fresh flowers. Those lanterns you found are absolutely beautiful!

@Emilydll: I’ve seemed to have lost my link to the lanterns, but you can basically do a google search for “led paper lanterns” and go to the shopping link to find tons of options. Here’s one: http://www.paperlanternstore.com/10nableropab.html

Where did you find the little fireflies? Can you explain how you assembled the jar? We used to catch fireflies when I was a little girl. Of course, we let them go unharmed.
