About Mrs. Gloss

Read Part One here

Back to the search for a honeymoon location without torrential downpours, because I don’t want to be like this bride:

Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon? Part 2 : wedding honeymoon 18 1

So, after we nixed most of the faraway/exotic locations, we turned our search back around to find a place a little closer to home, so we wouldn’t have to spend a day (or two) on travel alone. We found a few islands that are reportedly outside of the ‘hurricane zone’.

Option #1: The ABC Islands –

Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon? Part 2 : wedding honeymoon 25 2

Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon? Part 2 : wedding honeymoon 32 3

The ‘ABC’ islands are Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. They lie just south of the projected hurricane zone and rarely get hit with the downpours and torrential winds I was concerned about. These islands boast ‘world class diving’ opportunities. We have never seriously gone diving before, but I’ve heard that you can take a 3-day course and get certified – which could be really fun. Also, it is easy to travel between the islands, and what sounds like more fun than ’island hopping’ on your honeymoon? I hadn’t heard of the other two (B & C) before I did a search for Aruba, but I see the poster ads for Aruba every day on the T, and apparently there are 90,000 friends there I haven’t met yet…

Option #2: Bermuda –

Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon? Part 2 : wedding honeymoon 42 4

Also said to be outside of the hurricane zone, but north of it. Although the island boasts pink sand beaches and a short travel time, I don’t think this is the option for us. It just seems a little too close, like maybe someplace we would go on vacation with our kids someday. Mr. Gloss is a proponent of Bermuda, since it boasts more golf courses per square mile than anywhere else in the world. I, however, merely make an attempt to golf so that I get to drive the golf cart and wear Lily P.

Plus, there is always the chance our plane could get lost in the Bermuda Triangle.

Option #3: Hawaii –

Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon? Part 2 : wedding honeymoon 52 5

It is still somewhat of a long flight, but there is no chance of hurricane season here! There are amazing beaches, the ability to visit multiple islands, and lush surroundings everywhere you look—what’s not to like? But, for some reason, I’ve never really been drawn to Hawaii, although everyone I know that has been has loved it. Again, it seems like a likely ’vacation spot’ down the road, and not the exotic honeymoon retreat we are looking for.

Plus, I love getting new stamps on my passport, and I wouldn’t get any if we went here.

So, we’ve made no decisions yet—but we are getting closer!

Do you have any exotic honeymoon suggestions for us?

Go with Curacao. It’s so lovely! I have not been there, only researched it with my students. :)

I’ve heard good things about all 3. I wouldn’t discount Bermuda so quickly! It’s gorgeous and you could always take the kids back and reminisce about your pre-kids days!

Our wedding is in October and we are having the same problems! With only a week for our honeymoon, we do not want to spend two of those days on a flight (read: No Hawaii!). And, we are both avid golfers and want to golf on our honeymoon. Many of the islands don’t have much in the way of golf.

Sooooo we are thinking about Bermuda. I went with my mom and sister when I was 16 and FI has never been. I have to say that it is super romantic and quaint and the perfect little honeymoon locale. But….a little close to home….and apparently October is its rainiest month. So we are a little up in the air.

PS Aruba is great - we went last year. Only a few golf courses, but enough so your FI could go a few times. The Hyatt is amazing….

We’ve booked our honeymoon to Curacao - and we’re so excited about it! Like you, we had never heard of it before (and neither has anyone else - so it sounds so exotic when you say you’re going there to other people!). Look into the Kura Hulanda resorts - they are highly recommended for luxury-seeking honeymooners!

Why don’t you go all the way south to Brazil or Chile? I know Argentina is also supposed to be nice. (All too far south for hurricane season to have an effect). And, What about Costa Rica? It’s gorgeous there - not sure if hurricanes will be a porblem though.

You can always go to the Pacific coast of Mexico! We were in Zihua in September and the weather was lovely. Just avoid the Atlantic Coast and you’ll be fine. :)

We also got married during hurricane season- not the first thing you think about when setting a date! We ended up honeymooning in Greece on Santorini Island (in Oia). Highly Recommed it! “Most beautiful sunset in the world….”

We are going to Aruba in late April. Neither of us have ever been but FI’s mom has and she recommended it to us. We are hoping to do some diving and maybe a little golf and some gambling.

I would just like to say that Hawaii, depending on which island you go to, can be either a romantic and relaxing honeymoon destination OR more like a vacation! I recommend Maui or Kauai if you want something more on the exotic side;)

I agree with you about Hawaii - I went to Maui in January, and loved it, but I’m not sure I’d want to go there on honeymoon.

It just doesn’t seem ‘tropical’ enough (it is, after all, still the USA).

I can highly recommend Aruba - very relaxing and romantic. Although it is very touristy and Americanized, there are quiet places to find. I’ve heard that Curacao is quieter though.

If you do go for Aruba, I can highly recommend two places - Bucati Beach Resort for a quieter hotel away from the touristy resorts, and the Flying Fishbone restaurant. Just make sure you get a booking at sunset, and ask for a table at the front so you can put your feet in the water!

I, too, have never really been drawned to Hawaii either. I’m sure it’s beautiful, but so are many other islands out there. And I’ve heard it’s really expensive.
Wherever picture 2 (with the lone boat) is. Go there! That picture alone is worth the trip!

My finance and I just booked our honeymoon to Curacao in late June. I had heard of it before we booked, but he hadn’t.
We looked all over the world, at all variety of trips that were within our budget til we settled here. There’s enough sand, shopping and relaxing for me, but there’s also an off-roading park for him. :)

Yeah what about Mexico, Ixtapa area? It is not as far as Hawaii and you get the stamp on the passport!

Sister and BIL Bruschetta honeymooned in Hawaii! Their pictures are absolutely amazing, and they struck a balance between an active and relaxing honeymoon. :-)

We had the same honeymoon struggles. Beach, fun, sun…but hurricane?! No thanks. We went with Aruba. Incredibly afforadable airfare from Chicago, friends have raved about how clean it is, it’s out of the hurricane path, and M & D Stiletto’s timeshare traded for it for the week after our wedding, so we get to stay for free :)

Curacao was another on the list - heard great things - but couldn’t get the timeshare for that week, darn it!

We are getting married in August and taking a honeymoon cruise to Bermuda the second week in Ocotber. This will be our third trip to Bermuda and we love this island. It is mostly couples and singles, no unemployment, gorgeous beaches, fabulous sunsets and wonderful rum drinks. May sure you purchase travel insurance. The nicest thing about traveling in October is that the kids are back in school. We are both red heads and burn easily but the sunny beaches here are so clean and everyone speaks english. I agree with MsHymanRoth, Hawaii is so far away from the east coast where we live. You lose 2 days in vacation time flying out there and back. I’ve been there as well but we prefer Bermuda.
