DIY Centerpieces - Part II

April 10th, 2009 @ 12:29 pm by Mrs. Beagle

As I continued to look for fresh floral alternatives, I came across an obvious solution: candles. I love candles. And scented candles can be a substitute for the aroma produced by fresh flowers. I mention this, because my mom (who was a tad disappointed when I mentioned I didn’t want to use fresh flowers) stated that she is always reminded of my Aunt’s wedding when she smells chrysanthemums, which were used at her wedding. I hadn’t thought of that before, but I really liked the idea of associating a smell with our wedding day. So, here are some images I found inspiring:

Cylindrical candles of varying heights provide an elegant look.

I love the way simple white candles look on a mirror.

Floating candles are simple and look amazing.

Most venues have rules regarding candle use, so you might want to check on what they are before investing time and money on candles (although an alternative to this is to have LED candles, although they are more expensive).

Are you using candle centerpieces? What will the layout of the candles look like?

I don’t know what the layout is going to look like yet, but I’m collecting wine bottles that I’m cutting the necks off of for candle holders. I figure I can cut them in varying heights, then put tea lights inside of them to create a soft glow. The picture of the white candles on a mirror has me thinking that I might abandon the other centerpieces I was going to do and just stick with candles.

I’m doing a glass hurricane with a white pillar inside surrounded by white toned shells and I think I’ll surround the hurricane with clear votives filled with white candles. thanks to coupons it will be very affordable!

i love candles too - the soft lighting they create is perfect! just be careful not to go over board with scented candles - the smell can interfere with the food (which is why restaurants dont use scented candles). But Im sure a few scented ones scattered around the venue would be great!

Be careful with scented candles they can bother folks with allergies or Asthma. They bother my FMIL.

I love candles! The picture of them on the cupcake stand is sweet and romantic.

I agree - be careful with scented candles interrupting the aroma of all the lovely food :)

i like the candle idea and having an associated scent but i agree with kayakgirl. i know for myself, i tend to run a bit sensitive with strong and heavy scents [i get a headache] so i’d be careful as well.

FI designed ours with floating candles and river rock. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!

I’m mimic-ing Mrs. Lemon’s idea from way back when. We got 3 candles/table (not including 3 votives/table included with our venue) and glasses at IKEA for $120! One thing I should mention is that when I emailed my venue the info, they cautioned that it might get really warm in the venue….so if you don’t have lofty cielings, be careful!
I bet you could do that one with the plate using some beads (ie jeweltoned xmas tree garland) and a few candles set within it. I know Pottery Barn outlet had some nice charger plates/bowls around the holidays for not very much.

We’re doing candles too - floaters in a variety of vases that I’ve been collecting from friends, yard sales and anywhere else I can find. Each table with have a different centerpiece, which I’m just so in love with! (Oh, and I’ve spent less than $25 for almost 60 vases)

We have three different types of centerpieces, and one of them will be a candlescape. I love the look of the simple glass cylandars with the floating candle. The water makes such a pretty reflection glow!

I found a vanilla scented candle at my favorite store, Hobby Lobby, that has a very light scent that I’m thinking about using, but haven’t fully decided yet. Also our venue is very roomy so I don’t think we will have a problem with it getting warm and stuffy.
@Margoxyvon: I loved Miss Lemon’s centerpieces too!

I love that last one. I’m also doing candle centerpieces like the last one with the floating tealight…with colored stones on the bottom of some and submerged flowers in others.
Thanks for the heads up about it being warm and stuffy - that never entered my mind!

We are using candle centerpieces! We are doing one large center vase/candle with sand and shells and starfish, with lots of mini votives and starfish around the table! We still have to do a mock up, but I think it will look pretty and give a romantic glow!

We are going with candle centerpieces too. I found some lanterns at IKEA and I don’t feel guilty for spending money on something I am not going to use again. I plan on taking the large lanterns and using them as decor in our home.

I am in love with this cupcake stand tea light centerpiece now…good thing I am waiting til the 3 month mark to make all of my planned purchases so I can change my mind, which I do all the time!

You can get glass votives with the candles already in them like the ones on the cupcake stand at Walmart in a package of 12 for less than 5.00. Unscented.

I love the candles on the cupcake stand!!! Does anybody know where I could get a cupcake stand like that? I wouldn’t think the DIY ones could hold the weight of all those votives…

We’re doing candle centerpieces. We got enough candles and centerpieces for 20 tables at Ikea for $20. Unfortunately, all candles have to be enclosed, so that put a hamper on my idea similar to #2 and has taken a bit of replanning, but will be even more awesome :)

I’m copying the 4th image that I saw in a magazine months ago (the tapers in glass holders) with varying mismatched taper holders that I’ve been thrifting for months. I’ll be doing 8-10 holders a table with 12″ deep purple tapers. For about a dollar a holder and less than a dollar a candlestick, that makes an absolutely gorgeous and very elegant centerpiece for $20! I’m so excited.
