I DO Feel Like a Master

April 10th, 2009 @ 11:00 am by Mrs. D'orsay

A master of the Master Cleanse, that is. Okay, maybe I’m a novice, because it was my first cleanse/fast/detox, or whatever, but I succeeded.

This blog post is by no means telling you to do a cleanse/fast/detox, or what have you. I’m just letting you know my experience with it, because hey, it’s part of my journey. So let us journey…

As most of you know, I can’t work while I’m in the UK. This gives me a fair amount of free time (in other words, all my time). There is definitely ample time to try things like the Master Cleanse. I have a confession for you guys… are you ready for it?

I actually enjoyed the Master Cleanse.

The cleanse gave me time to consider my relationship with food, what food I enjoy, how food affects my mental state, how/when/why I consume food. I realized that a lot of the time I eat, I’m not actually eating because I’m hungry, I’m actually eating because I’m bored, emotional, or worse, out of habit. Yes, that’s right, I’ve actually been eating food because it’s a habit. At this point I realized, ’WTF have I been doing?!’ Mr. D and I always get popcorn at the movies (habit), and he also enjoys garlic bread with pasta, so I eat it too (more carbs habit). Not to mention, I also realized the portions I’ve been consuming are out of this world. If I’ve been surviving/thriving on 1-2 liters of the MC, juice then why have I been overstuffing myself?

When my grandmother passed away it was the first day of the cleanse, and all I wanted to do after I spoke to my mother was to drown myself in macaroni and cheese (emotional habit).

I stayed with the cleanse though, and didn’t succumb to the emotional cravings. One great tip I read while I was researching the master cleanse is that if you’re hungry for pizza, visualize a green salad. If you still want to eat the salad, then you’re actually hungry. If not, the pizza was just a craving. I repeated this over and over when we went to the movies in an attempt to avoid the popcorn.

Prior to the MC I ate a vegetarian diet with a slight addiction to cheese (just check out my Weddingbee bio!). While this is okay (but potentially high in fat and refined sugar) and I get a wide variety of nutrients, I always think there is room for improvement. The places I’m improving now are:

  • Avoiding refined sugar (big time, like it’s the plague)
  • Avoiding dairy (gasp!)
  • Avoiding refined flour
  • Eating more pulses, complete grains, and kicking my veggie intake into high gear
  • Proper portions

I’ve been exploring raw food and macrobiotic cooking as well finding recipes that fulfill what I’m looking for in my diet. I’m avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and as much as I’ll miss the coffee, I think it will ultimately be better for me.

My theory is that if I survived without these things (refined sugar, dairy, and refined bleached flour) for 10 days, I can certainly make a long-term commitment to it. Oddly enough, my only honest-to-god craving has been for pickles and red peppers (go figure).

For those of you wondering about weight loss, I only lost 8 pounds. As for all those celebs saying they lost a gagillion pounds in two weeks… I have no idea how they did it. Maybe if I did 5 hours of cardio a day or something, that would have been possible. But with moderate workouts and drinking the juice, I didn’t really have that much weight loss. In any case, I’m much more excited for the weight loss that is to come from my revised diet.

Have you cut any foods out of your diet or done a cleanse in the run up to the wedding?

So for 10 days the only thing you can consume is the juice? How much does the juice cost, or can you make it yourself?

That is so great that the cleanse made your rethink your eating habits. I did a very mild cleanse compared to yours and I definitely felt more in charge of my eating habits. It also helped me become more conscious of my bad food habits and I want to eat healthier now way more veggies! I heard the MC is super hard, and it scares me a little so congrats on getting through it!

I’m with Erin, is that all you consumed? I tried this dumb Juice diet a few years ago and had the worst headache for two days. I would like to do a cleansing some time before the wedding. But with work and school right now, it would be too much to try to do a cleansing.

We’re big proponents of the cleanse. Good health is much more vital than much wealth.

Miss D would you mind letting us know how the juice tastes? I’ve been contemplating doing this for awhile now but as a picky eater/drinker I’m afraid I won’t be able to stomach it. I know it’s supposed to be like a lemonade, but does it really taste like lemonade?

I did this a while back. I lost about the same - 8 pounds or so. But in 10 days, that’s still a lot, esp for someone w/ only 10 pounds to lost. But I did gain probly 3-4 pounds back right away. Some from water weight, and some from the fact that even though I’d planned to resist, I definitely overindulged after going off the diet for the first couple of days.

As far as taste, it’s really not bad. If you’re super picky, you probably won’t like it, but if you’re someone who is generally able to eat what’s on your plate, you’ll be fine. It’s not as sweet as real lemonade, but it’s better than you’d probably expect. I found the cayenne to be the worst part, esp since it tends to settle and the last part of the drink will be really strong.

You don’t buy the lemonade, you just make it yourself. It’s just lemons, water and cayenne, so it’s not expensive. I also bought a citrus juicer b/c otherwise it’s a pain to squeeze the lemons and you don’t get all of the juice.

There’s a few other elements to it — a laxative tea and a salt water flush (in terms of taste, the latter is super gross). You can get a book, but probably if you search online, you can find the program.

I surprisingly felt fine during the fast and didn’t cheat once. I wasn’t really hungry, but definitely missed food and actually eating something and enjoying a meal.

I haven’t done the MC or any other cleanse, but I am following a diabetic diet with my dad that is pretty in tune to portion sizes, pacing of eating, and staying away from the refined carbs and what not. I’ve lost 28lbs so far, so I’m a believer! :)

Interesting post. I’m not convinced that cleanses or any type of fasting is actually good for your body, but it is good that it made you reflect on your eating habits. I know I definitely sometimes eat out of boredom or habit. One question for you: why give up caffeine? All the studies show it’s good for you! Apparently a study just came out that says 3-5 cups a day can cut down your risk of Alzheimer’s! As long as you get plenty of water as well, there is no need to cut coffee out of your life! Maybe just stop putting sugar in it, drink it with soy milk instead of half-n-half?

I’m currently on a cleanse too! I’ve been on a diet for the last 3 months, so I already had lost all my water weight—and then some! So I haven’t lost a TON of weight on the cleanse, but you’re right, you do see a lot of patterns you break after you consciously LOOK at what you’re eating! Yay for weight loss!

The first time I did this I lost 26lbs. I like the salt water flush as it’s all natural and really works for my delicate yet complicated system (ie not regular AT ALL).

To get the most lemon juice without all the squeezing, I just put all ingredients, unpeeled lemons and all, in the blender. It is easy and a time saver.

I do this cleanse every six months.

Oh and I now do it with limes instead of lemons. The taste is milder…much better. And during the summer I use ice and make it a slushy.. just another way to make the cleanse a little easier.

I wanted to do the Blueprint Cleanse but am having a hard time with the price! I might try this one first. I really want to shrink my stomach a little bit. I’m a piggy! I’m proud of you for making it through!

I’m really really glad you shared all this… I’ve been looking into these just to try and see how much healthier it can “jumpstart” me to be–I know i eat all of the wrong things now and it’d be a lot easier for me to have a fresh start than anything else ;)

I don’t want to burst everyone’s bubbles, but detox diets can actually do a lot more harm than good. I’m glad that you had a good psychological experience as a result of the diet (better understanding of your relationship with food), but depriving your body of all the major nutrients (vitamins, proteins, complex carbohydrates, etc) by drinking only juice and saltwater for many days on end is not good for your physical health and it’s never going to be.

Any benefits people experience on these diets probably come from drinking more water (since most people don’t drink enough) and increasing their intake of fruits and vegetables (for those detox diets that include them). Increasing your intake of water, fruits, and vegetables will be a lot more beneficial to you than a detox diet. Your new diet sounds like it will be very healthy for you and sustainable, so congrats on making those changes.

In addition, the nutritional deprivation of a prolonged detox diet can lower your metabolism. Your body adjusts to its drastically lowered caloric intake by consuming drastically fewer calories…so when you go back to eating normally, you may find that you do not metabolize food as well and gain the weight back faster. You should also be sure to keep ingesting a lot of protein, as protein contributes to muscle fiber (and muscle burns calories) and without it the body’s muscles begin to break down and thus you are less strong and less able to burn off the calories in what you eat.

These diets are not a jumpstart to better health, although they are a big change, which can help some people get on the road to better health than slow changes can. If anything, they are likely to mess up your metabolism and the nutrients in your body. However, I have heard some good things about fasting for one day or doing a juice diet for one meal or one day.

This article on WebMD says more about it: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/detox-diets-purging-myths

The cleanse involves drinking only lemonade made from fresh lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, water and Cayenne pepper… it basically provides no nutritional value and causes a deficiency of protein, vitamins, and minerals…

I had a roommate do the master cleanse, and while she lost 25+ pounds, she was constantly getting headaches, crabby, and gained back the 25 pounds and then some after stopping it. ..

OMG. I have to post on this because as a nutritionist, I have to say something.

The cleanse is absolutly terrible for you. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE dont do it ever again. It puts a terrible strain on your heart as it has to work extra hard to pump nutrients that you are not getting with the juice/ lemonade/ etc. Your body is basically losing necessary fluids, and even though you are consuming only juice, you are essentially dehydrating yourself to terrible levels. And of course, there are nutrients and vitamins you can only get through eating calories that you will be lacking if you go on a cleanse.

But most importantly, you will gain all of that weight back and more. I promise you that. Being on the cleanse makes physical activity dangerous as you are dehydrated and lacking calories to properly work out. So your exercise level will be at a low level if you can manage it. You may also lose a couple pounds, but as soon as your body starts eating again, your metabolism is at such a slow level, that your body will store all of the new fat, calories, etc. just in case you decide to pull a cleanse again. A cleanse puts your metabolism in emergency mode and it will take at least 2 weeks or more to get out of it.

And of course, there are side effects during it. Vomiting, migranes, uncontroable sweating, loss of skin color, etc. The risks of short term and long term health issues is outstanding and should be taken into great consideration. Dont be fooled by what celebs say about it. Ask Beyonce who apparently lost 30lbs in two weeks but gained it all back and more. She also said she had irregular heart beat and was sick the entire time she did it.

I really hope Mrs. Bee reconsiders this post as I’ve seen people hospitalized from the cleanse. I love that Miss. D reconsidered her diet through the cleanse, but I cannot support this post one bit from a professional and academic level.

Oh, and for those wanting to try this, may I recommend eating clean instead. It will have the same effects of detoxing, but will give you the necessary nutrients you need. Eating clean is a valuable principal of eating that everyone should learn and you will most likely lose weight from it and keep it off if good habits are substained.

I’m with our friend the nutritionist…cleanses, especially crash cleanses, just aren’t healthy on so many ways. On the simplest level, 8 pounds in 10 days is not a healthy or sustainable weight-loss. Any time some something like that happens you can bet money that something is wrong…

@Erin: @kurlynut: yup, it’s all you consume, but you can sorta consume as much as you want. Lemons were on sale when I started and the maple syrup (shipped from Canada to the UK) was kinda expensive at £5 a bottle. Each bottle contained approx 19 tablespoons. Everything you need is at your grocery store.

@Emilydll: I’m a freak because I thought the spicy lemonade was tasty. But I know many other people have had a difficult time with the spicyness.

I unerstand I had an unusual experience and I’m almost positive it’s due to my choice to have an active or sedentary day. If I want to sit on the couch all day I can, go for a hike a noon - sure! Not everyone has that choice and I think I would have had side effects that Nutritionist mentioned if I had a heavy work schedule, kids, or was working out a bunch.

Though I will say, as someone who has been hospitalized for dehydration as a child, I did have concern that I was becoming dehydrated. When I started to have that concern I stopped the cleanse. In fact, before I went in to the cleanse I made a pact with myself that if I started to feel terrible that I would stop. I didn’t feel terrible so I didn’t stop until the tenth day.

Also, I’m not really concerned about the weight I lost on the cleanse itself. I’m more excited to restart with a healthy pattern of eating and a better relationship to food. Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check it out!

Again, I’m not recommending this to or for anyone. It’s just what I did for 10 days.

@Indie B: This is going to sound AMAZINGLY stupid. But I speak to Mrs. Avocado pretty frequently and I’ve got to say, mormons have the best skin. Why this is, I don’t know. But I know they avoid alcohol and caffeine. So maybe that will work for my skin too?

I’m not up for a cleanse, but I have been watching refined sugars/ processed foods/ artificial sweeteners. And while I still give in to the occasional food craving, I’ve made some changes. I used to drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day with Coffee Mate creamer (yum!) and now I have coffee once a week, if that. It’s good to think about the food you consume and eat what is healthy and for satiating hunger.
