Finding *The* Venue

April 12th, 2009 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Beagle

One of the first items on our wedding checklist was finding a venue. Even though we had about 15 months until the wedding, I was concerned about limited availability the longer we waited. My search began on the web (actually this is how most of my planning began) where we looked for venues in Austin and its surrounding areas. We really wanted to find a place that had indoor and outdoor gathering areas. One of the first venues I fell in love with was the Allen House:

Yes, I’m a sucker for old houses. The Allen House is nestled in heart downtown Austin and, although I loved the atmosphere, it would not have been large enough to accommodate our guests. So, we continued our search.

After much thought and consideration, we decided to look further south of Austin (our usual stomping grounds). I came across Tuscan Hall, located in the hill country about 20 minutes southwest of Austin:

An added bonus was the Chapel Dulcinea, a free wedding chapel located within walking distance from Tuscan Hall that overlooks the hill country *swoon* (Although I should note that since it is free, it is usually booked a year+ in advance—they were booked for our wedding date in October ’09 when we visited in August ’08).

The hall accommodates about 200 people, if the indoor and outdoor space is used. However, we were a little uncomfortable about the location. This would have been perfect for a morning or afternoon wedding, but we didn’t want our guests traveling late at night down winding, unlit country roads to get home. And so, the search continued….

Then, I stumbled upon this:

Mercury Hall. You may recognize it from this fabulous wedding:

This wedding was featured here and was made possible by this wonderful photog.

Mercury Hall was an old church that was moved to its current location and restored to its original state. Wood floors, stained glass windows and antique chandelier light fixtures accent the interior of the hall, while large oak trees and a spacious lawn decorate the outside of the hall. This was the perfect combination of indoor/outdoor atmosphere to satisfy my heart’s desires! (For a while, I dreamed of white Christmas lights twinkling in the trees while guests mingled with cocktails on the lawn.) In addition, the hall provides chairs and tables that can be rented at a reasonable price. But this is not our venue. Why? Well, it would have been necessary to use the outdoor and indoor spaces for our guests. That would involve backup plans in case of rain or cold weather, which would have meant tent, and possibly heater rentals, and would have equated to expenses we did not have in our budget. :( (Having a back up plan for weather is a must in Texas, where weather is completely unpredictable.)

So what is our venue you ask? Well, it’s the next best thing, of course! :) A new hall had just opened around the time we started our venue search. (In fact, I think I came across it on page 10 of a Google search one day.) Enter *the* venue: Waterford House:

The instant I walked in, I knew. It’s South Austin! It has a reception area with enough room to seat all our guests and still leaves room for a dance floor! The floors are stained concrete (and not ugly carpet)! Banquet chairs, tables, and white linens are all included in the rental! There is a walkway around the outside of the hall that overlooks a green belt! I’m in love, and I can’t wait to attend our wedding reception.

Did you experience love at first sight with your venue?

Oo I love your venue! I like the stained concrete…I always wondered why catering halls always have ugly carpeting.

I’m so glad you found your venue, especially after all the let-downs! I actually booked our reception venue site unseen (we live 4 hours away from our wedding city)! Just by the photos online I KNEW it was ours. When we finally visited it in person, I still felt the exact same way!

It’s beautiful! I live in South Austin and have NEVER heard of it…even when I did the search in South Austin for my own venue…Oh well. It’s a beautiful place and we can’t wait to see how you make it your own.

I knew the moment I walked in my venue. When we first arrived I walked in, felt the magic. Even the bathrooms were gorgeous. I was in love and relieved! We were flexible with dates, so it was also that day we officially set our date. The day we found and booked the site was such a special day that I will not forget!

My FI is really big into golf, so for his birthday the first year that we were dating, I went to a really nice golf course around this area, Deere Run golf course in Silvis, IL to get him a gift certificate for he and his dad to go play a round. It was gorgeous! I just wanted to stay there all day, even though I knew no one and had no membership! When Aaron proposed, one of the first planning ideas that entered into my head was DEERE RUN! We booked it immediately and have tailored our wedding around this venue!

@cottoncandy: Yeah, it’s funny… I stumbled across it on page 10 of a google search after. :) We booked them shortly after they officially opened last fall. It was so hard finding a non-hotel venue that would accommodate enough people.

It was definitely love at first site with my venue. As soon as I saw it, I wanted to book it. But, people around me kept saying you need to look at others. I went to one more to appease them and then went and booked my venue!

Beautiful venue! I fell in love with my venue the first time I visited! My mom asked me to look at other venues just to be sure. I did, but once my FI went to see our venue with me, we were signing a contract! 12 days until we use it for our reception!

Our venue was definitely love at first sight! It was actually the first site we visited - it has these amazing rock formations and every place we visited afterwards just didn’t compare. We loved our venue so much that we actually changed our morning from Saturday evening to Saturday morning to make it fit into our budget!

Yes, but then fulfilling our love for it was a total delayed reaction, after we looked at over 10 other places!

Miss Beagle,

I am in need of advice on throwing a bachelorette party in Austin! I have exhausted all my resources looking for a place to stay…do you have any recommendations of a place to stay for 12 girls…and not too expensive?? Thanks!

I too fell in love with the Allen House after I saw it online, I literally started envisioning my wedding there….that was until I visited it, it was SO tiny! I couldn’t believe that that stone area is the entire outside venue :(

I love the picture of the waterford house! Congrats on finding your venue! Don’t know if you came across it, but we are getting married at the Inn at Wild Rose Hall :) ahh I just love the Austin Hill Country!

The Allen House is very nice but small. I love The Waterford House and wanted my wedding there but no one contacted me back. But in the end it worked out for the best, because I don’t like South Austin.

Miss Beagle,

Just a word of advice. Expect and plan for traffic…….South Austin traffic is awful.

Love at first sight with my venue? YES. Did I know it at the time? Hmmm…not so much. Deep down I did, but I fought it–I had my heart set on a different venue from the one we ultimately chose. The site we are using was the very first one we looked at, and when I saw it, I thought it was gorgeous…but then we looked at three or four more sights and I couldn’t make up my mind. When we realized our dream venue was out of the budget, we kept going back to the first venue and comparing every place else to it–now I can’t imagine having our reception anywhere else! :)

@AnnieAAA: I know.. I really liked Allen House until I saw the size and limited parking. My parents attended a wedding at Wild Rose Hall and said it was really beautiful.

@tbanks33:
We live in S. Austin, so I am too familiar with the problems of SouthPark Meadows & I35 traffic congestion. I think if our guests take the back route, we shouldn’t have too much of a problem dealing with traffic.

We fell in love “at first site” with our venue, Mayfield Park. We looked at many other places in Austin, and nothing was similar at all. Tuscan Hall was our second choice, but alas, the chapel was booked and we couldn’t find another ceremony location.

My favorite thing about Waterford House is the green walls! I saw an ad for it in Austin Wedding Guide and the pictures really grabbed my attention with that pretty green. Your wedding colors will complement it nicely, Miss Beagle.
