About Mrs. Stiletto

Goin’ Glam for the Honeymoon

April 13th, 2009 @ 10:57 am by Mrs. Stiletto

The day after our wedding, the Stilettos will be taking off for sunny, hot, and south-of-the-hurricane-zone, Aruba. We’re excited to enjoy lazy days on the beach with icy cold beers and no agenda. By the time of our wedding, we will have been in planning mode for a year and half. Relaxation will be a must. I, of course, will not feel blissfully happy unless I love what I’m wearing and how I look in it.

One big hold in the process is the fact that this little lady has not been in swimming shape for quite a few years, and therefore has zero comfort in a bathing suit. After a year and a half of intense working out and healthy eating, I’ve managed to lose 30 pounds and feel great. Dropping 6 sizes has been amazing… you have no idea! Being in bikini shape for the honeymoon would make me so incredibly happy. But despite dropping the pounds, I’m far from being ready to picking up a collection of string bikinis.

I certainly wish I looked like this:

Despite dropping the pounds, I’ve never actually worn a bikini (in my mind it’s the equivalent of walking down the street in my underwear), and I’m absolutely not toned.

Yes, the scale has continued to go down - which is great! - but when you lose a significant amount of weight, significant toning needs to be a part of the process. I’m hoping that over the next 5 months, I might be there. But in the short term, I’ve found a lot of great options that aren’t quite, err, revealing, but are still sexy swimwear in my book.

I love vintage-style swimwear from the ’40s, ’50s, and early ’60s. Pin up girls are so sexy, no? I came across Norma Kamali, and fell in love. Her pieces are exactly what I’ve been looking for. This high-waisted bikini is magnificent and glamorous. It’s a little more expensive than I’d like to invest in a bathing suit, but I’m keeping it on the list as a maybe… you know, if I win the lottery before the wedding. Sigh.

It may not be couture, but this high-wasted bikini is more in my price range with very similar elements. Don’t judge the picture (or the website) harshly. This line of Esther Williams swimwear is designed by, well, Esther Williams, pin-up girl of the 1940s. Who would know pin-up girl-style swimwear better than her? And, I can actually vouch for the merchandise - a few years back I ordered a one-piece suit in similar vintage style from the site. It’s cute! Again, it’s not couture, but has phenomenal support to hide your not-so-favorite parts.

Polka dots are always fabulously fun and vintage. I love this one-piece. It’s similar to the one I bought from the Esther Williams site, but a little more fun. Big white sunglasses would be so cute with this while lounging by the pool!

This suit also comes in black, but the yellow is darling as well. I love the little ruffle that makes it not old lady-ish, and the simple halter detail.

Va-va-va-voom! I don’t know if I’ll be feeling quite this feisty before hitting the beach, but this is a great option if I feel like living on the edge.

Of course, my goal is to be skimpy bikini-ready by the honeymoon, but I think I’d still want to take along at least one of these fabulous high-waisted bikinis and a vintage-y one piece… I definitely want to bring some glamour with me to the beaches of Aruba.

Are you a fan of vintage-style swimsuits? Where do you like to shop for them?

And I have no idea as to where to look for swim suits lol.

It’s you’re honeymoon you should wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in. It’s not losing the weight that matters, it’s building up the self confidence. I think you’ll be confident enough to wear anything you like with your new husband!

HOORAY! Great job :)

I’ve been eyeing some cuties at the GAP and Old Navy which have simple, adorable one pieces that are decidedly NOT old ladyish!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the vintage looking swimsuits! What better time to wear them than in an exotic location on your honeymoon! Aruba is my favorite place in the whole world! Absolutely gorgeous and amazing weather! If you are staying at the Marriott it is amazing, and has it’s own private island!!

Check out my blog post,

It’s about finding the right swimsuit to fit your body type!

@Lauryn:
Awesome! Glad to hear more great things on Aruba! We’re staying in a timeshare, but it’s related to the Marriott, so we should have full use of their facilities.

Recommendations will be very much accepted on things to do/places to eat in Aruba…hmm, that would be a great post for me to do, solicit Aruba advice :)

Congrats on your weight loss - and seriously, wear whatever you want. Being in great “bikini” shape is a myth perpetuated to sell diet products.
If you wear a bikini and feel comfortable and great in it, it really doesn’t matter whether you are toned or not. Wearing a bikini is not some kind of exclusive privilege - so please stop feeding the mindset that we all have to look a certain way to wear them!
I recommend you go to a store and try on as many bikinis as you can fit in your arms - there are cuts and colors that will make you look fantastic, I promise. (I prefer higher waisted styles with some rouching and underwire halter tops, but that is because I have a bigger chest and am sort of bottom heavy.) Bright colors will draw the eye away from any areas you would rather not emphasize. A bright color on top draws the eye up, etc.
My fiance was the one who was always pressuring me to wear a bikini, and the one who finally gave me the courage to stop saying, “I’m 170lbs, I can’t wear a bikini.” Now that I’ve started wearing them, they are so much more comfortable than tankinis or one-pieces - they are cooler, and easier to wash, pack, and put on and take off. I also get significantly better chest support with a bikini than any other swimsuit.
On a non cheerleading self-image note, I was very excited that VS is now stocking their swimwear in some of their stores, so you can try it on!

Victorias Secret Bathing suits last a long time and they really know a woman’s body.

Everything but Water Stores have all different tops and bottoms and the ladies that work there do all the work for you and help you.

Good Luck Ladies!

@edb:
Excellent, thank you for all of the great feedback and suggestions!

And yes, I definitely don’t think you have to be a size 00 or a VS model to pull one off…I definitely will never be that! I just want to be less jiggly ;) I’m also more than anything…feeling totally weird about it. Seriously, it’s like sitting around in public in my underwear…why would I want to do that?! It might take me a bit to work through that fear factor!

Miss Stiletto, I completely get where you’re coming from! And I love vintage-inspired swimwear (and everything else, but that’s another story). ModCloth has some adorable choices:

Ewww…honestly, I think the first Victoria’s Secret girl was photoshopped waaaay too much. She barely has a thigh. :o

Congrats on losing 30lbs! That’s definitely not chump change!

I Loooove vintage looking suits! I was looking at getting one myself, but of course the ones I absolutely LOVE were well over $100. Plus I like to try things on, I’m kind-of unporportionate. :P

Ooh thanks for the link! Cute polka dot bikini on there!

@Mrs. Sushi:
Ha! I hadn’t noticed. Where did her thighs go?! Thanks for this link also. Love it! I honestly can’t get enough of vintage-y swimwear. I’m also a sucker for the ones with cherries ;)

I like your vintage results. Like you mentioned, bikinis are too much like underwear in my opinion. Remember, though, to make sure if you get a white suit it isn’t see-through when it gets wet!

Hee. If I had the guts to EVER wear a white bathing suit, I would not have needed to do this post ;) I’m far too much of a self concious wuss!

@Miss Stiletto:

Hi Miss Stiletto!

You must book yourself a sunset dinner at the Flying Fishbone restaurant - the most romantic meal I’ve ever had!

Re swimsuits, I think J Crew has some really cute one-pieces at the moment (did you see the ladies in the Sex and the City movie in their one-pieces? Very old-school glamour). The JCrew bikinis are mix and match as well, so lots of flattering options.

J Crew does have cute stuff…as always. I constantly forget to look there. And yes, the SATC movie had fabulous swimwear!

@AdrienneB:
I feel like I’ll be looking at all of the other honeymooners while we’re in Aruba and wondering “do I know you from Weddingbee….?” We should all come up with a secret signal or handshake or something ;)
