Hello, I’m Miss Mary Jane!

I’m a 26-year-old Instructional Designer (basically, I work with instructors and technology every day). I grew up in northern Minnesota, went to college out west, and now I’m working, schooling, living, and wedding planning in Grand Forks, North Dakota. I chose to be “Mary Jane” because I love me some heels! Living in ND means I have to forgo fashion in favor of warmth for a good portion of the year, but now that the snow is melting, I can rock my Mary Janes once again!

Some of my loves include photography, Photoshopping (it’s a verb, swear!), reading, scrapbooking, sewing, and cooking. I don’t do any of those things very often because I am a grad student. I also love cars, and come summer I’ll spend hours waxing mine (yes, really).

Mr. MJ and I have been dating for just 1.5 years, but we know each other better than two people should be allowed to know each other. We enjoy watching movies together, practicing our photography skills, destroying each other in MarioKart Wii, and philosophizing for hours about whatever pops in to our heads. Right now we’re both focused on finishing up spring semester, keeping up with our jobs, closing on our first house, and getting married, of course.

We’re planning a civil ceremony with 6 (six!) guests and a sub-$1000 budget. I hope we can create a romantic and memorable experience for everyone involved, all for less than a month’s rent. Will we succeed? You’ll soon see!

oh dude, awesome! my hubby and i got married in vegas with 5 of our friends, and it was so much fun. we also spent under $1000 for all the wedding stuff (including my dress, which was $99 on sale, whee!). we spent a little more on flights, hotel and food, but that was our “honeymoon”, so we felt like we were entitled.

i can’t wait to see what all you’re planning! welcome!

It probably sounds stupid, but you’re giving a voice to brides who DON’T cater to the wedding industry BS that make people think less of “nontraditional” weddings. Yes, we can have nonreligious, small weddings that are poignant and memorable.

Oh, this reminds me of one of my favorite weddings from back in my planning days: they’d budgeted for a medium-sized wedding with moderate frills, but went with a courthouse ceremony with just their closest friends, followed by lunch at a neat cafe nearby. The whole budget went to a drop-dead fabulous photographer. Whenever the guest list woes would overtake me, I’d think about that wedding, and their unbelievably gorgeous pictures of them and their friends just having a wonderful, wonderful day.
