On Weight Loss…

On Weight Loss... : wedding fitness Ihate image

I abhor running, and going to the gym in general, but mostly running. So the whole ’getting in shape and toned-up’ for the wedding thing hasn’t really been working that well.

It’s not even just my mindset; my body hates running. So much so that my airway passages close up after running for a mile because my body knows it would rather deprive itself of oxygen and die rather than continue to run. Yes, my body physically rejects all forms of exercise.

I really enjoy pilates, but my schedule is generally too chaotic to attend regular classes at the gym. To top it off, I get really discouraged if the weight doesn’t come off quickly, which only compounds the issue, even though I understand that that’s not really how it works.

So, a few months ago I made Mr. Gloss join the gym with me.

Having a workout buddy helped a lot. We motivated each other to go when the other felt lazy, etc. Then, Mr. Gloss went and dropped like 15 lbs. in a little over a month (note: we went to the gym equally), and has lost about another 5 since then. How come boys can lose weight so easily? It’s really unfair. And again (since I clearly have not lost 20 lbs.) I became frustrated, and lost motivation.

I know part of the issue is that when I get bored, exercise is not enjoyable for me and not interesting. I even get bored watching TV while running on the treadmill.

So ladies, what do you do to keep it interesting? Where do you find your motivation?

Haha, Mr. Bruschetta and I are competitive gym-goers. I get all jealous if he’s able to get in a good workout and I don’t or can’t.

Miss Gloss, are you asthmatic? I am, but my body only “rejects” running or other cardio when I’ve got a cold (::sniff sniff:: like today). :-(

I know this may sound unhealthy, but looking at people who enjoy working out and who look fantastic motivates me. I also HAVE to have music that I love when I’m working out. I also have to be by myself. I am an antisocial worker-outer. My motivation is that I really want to do a boudoir photoshoot for my FI as a wedding present, but there’s no way I’d even consider it unless I lose another 30-40lbs…

I find I get really bored running on the treadmill. I don’t as much running outside.

Also, I get really winded the first mile or so. It gets better after that.

It’s ’cause men have so much more muscle to fat ratio (at least.. that’s what I tell myself). But it totally sucks. Girls just like to hold onto their fat, I guess.

I’m a semi-ok runner, but suck at running on the treadmill.

I elliptical for 65 minutes/4-5 times a week. Here’s my breakdown:
-20 minutes at a fast pace going forward
-2 minutes going backwards
-on the 30, 40, and 50 minute marks, 2 minutes backwards
-on the 60 minute mark, 5 minute cooldown

I also set my goal to do no less than 7 miles in the 65 minutes. If I’m really being strict with myself, I listen to a workout playlist (Carmen Electra has some great ones), and I come to know the playlists so well that I know where I should be in my workout depending on the song.

The most important is to set your goals and compete with yourself to do better and better. Also…I love to set a goal of being the sweatiest lady in the gym… ;)

I absolutely love Dance Dance revolution on the Wii. I have a Wii fit as well but I haven’t touched it yet.

You can set the number of calories or amount of time you want to burn. The songs are fun and its good for toning muscles too. It usually takes me an hour to an hour and a half to do 450 calories, so I’m planning on splitting it into two 30 minute sessions when I do it- one in the morning and one after work.

I hate the idea of going to the gym, I like working out at home, and I love video games, so this is perfect for me!

I do not like running either, unless I have a dog with me and then I feel like I’m walking the dog. I’m going to try the 30 day shred and see how that goes.

I also cannot stand running - all I can think about is how long until I’m done. I’ve read a lot of fitness articles outlining why running for long distances is not actually a natural thing for anyone, especially women (some hip-to-knee angle messes with our joints). That makes me feel a lot better.

I’ve started lifting a lot of weights, and enjoy that. I’m loving the feeling of being strong, and of being sore after a good workout.

Also - interval training rocks. It takes such a short amount of time, and is interesting because you’re only ever doing the same thing for a minute or two.

I used to be the same way!!! Then I found Zumba….its like dancing/aerobics/shaking what your mamma gave ya etc lol Its so much fun that the 60 mins goes so fast! I started going 2-3 days a week and found it made a huge difference, well that and cutting back on the snacks. Then a month or so ago my teacher started a zumba toning class which is almost the same as zumba but addes weights. Now I go 2 days a week for 2 hours and 1 day for 1 hour. So I recommend seeing if you can find a zumba class near you, I swear by this class!

The treadmill is super boring, but then I discovered intervals. For 45 minutes, you adjust either the incline or the pace every 60 seconds. It makes the miles go by super quickly. I generally design my intervals to follow a general hill and valley tempo so I give myself little breaks. I’ve found I tend to burn a lot more calories that way.

I used to hate running, but now I sorta enjoy it (running outside). I dread running on a treadmill (or doing any kind of gym cardio machine), it bores me to tears.

I think the only way to keep motivated about exercise is getting goals. For me, weight loss (specific pound goals) don’t work, because it can be too discouraging when your weight loss starts plateauing.

Try to run outside, set some distance goals. 2 miles this week, 2.5 miles next week, train for a 5k. Sign up for a 5k. You’ll be motivated b/c you won’t want to show up unprepared.

If you get bored with your workouts, vary them. Do pilates a couple of times a week, run a couple of times a week, lift weights a couple of times a week. You won’t get bored because different aspects of your fitness will be challenged (strenghth/endurance/flexibility).

I actually love to run am no good at but feel awesome afterward. I think you need to set realistic non scale goals for yourself and make sure there are rewards. I started with 22 minutes running or walking and I got an extra bride magazine. Then I upped to to 35 minutes running and I got a cold stone treat (fro yo!!) I need to trick myself, much as a teacher tricks first graders, into wanting to do it. Since I’m not focused on my scale (just for WW purposes ONLY) it’s a become a much more enjoyable journey to my strapless dress :)

Take a class. I too hate running to no where so I take various classes at the gym. The super hard bodies in the front of class motivate me to work harder.

I abhor the gym as well. Especially running, though it’s not as bad when you have good scenery to enjoy along the way and somebody else isn’t running faster beside you, like my fiance.

I adore dance classes though. I go to the ballet studio and take jazz and ballet, and ballet will get you toned like you’ve never been before. They don’t build bulk in muscle, just long, lean strength. Plus it satisfies my need to have someone motivate me, have something different every time, and put personality into exercising instead of pounding the pavement mindlessly.

I also really really really hate running. I just don’t get those people who go running everyday for 20 miles or what have you. Granted, I’m jealous, because I know it’s an easy cheap exercise! I try to do Wii fit, or hit up the gym, but I’ve been lazy. I need a kick in the butt !

find something that you like to do and stick to it, even if you don’t go crazy on the intensity. and be CONSISTENT with it, because that will be the key to your weight loss.

if you run 30 minutes today but then don’t do anything the rest of the week, you aren’t getting much benefit from the high intensity exercise. if, instead, you walk while listening to fun music or watching a tv show on the treadmill for 30 minutes EVERY day, you will see the benefits over time.

i have ab definition from doing 5 minutes of abs every morning and night. i get on my floor and crank out some intense exercises for a few minutes and i’m done. i do exercise several days a week and eat really well, but i didn’t step in the gym at all for those abs. it was all about the consistency!

good luck, and whatever you do, BE CONSISTENT ABOUT IT!

Good news! You don’t have to love running… but if you want to loose weight you do have to love lifting weights. Muscle burns more calories than fat when just sitting around…so the more muscle you build, the more energy (calories) your body uses to keep that muscle. So, if you do exercises like cardio it’s great for your heart, but if you want to see results fast in terms of weight loss and not spend hours upon hours in the gym try to learn how to build muscle using weights. I used to be a cardio crazed person until I read The Abs Diet (they now have one for women too) and learned how important weights are. Now if I have to short change a workout it’s generally the straight up cardio….instead I do a lifting routine without real breaks which gets the heart rate up but also builds major muscle. :) Good luck Miss Gloss! (In terms of keeping myself motivated I print out a monthly calendar and give myself a sticker each time I work out. Just having that visual reminder of how consistent (or not!) I’ve been hanging on the fridge helps me go to the gym. :) )

I also hate exercise, but went out and bought a treadmill so I can lose 35 lbs before I get married. I also joined myfooddiary.com, which is awesome! Kinda like Weight Watchers, except with calories instead of points, and so much cheaper. Warning - if you go from never exercising, to trying to run everyday, you will hurt yourself. I found this out the hard way! Had to go to the Dr.’s and was told to start slow.

@Miss Duckling:
Mr. S gave me the 30 Day Shred for Christmas, and it’s fun and a really good workout. That Jillian is touch, let me tell you. Great for toning arms and shoulders!
