Unexpected Expense

April 13th, 2009 @ 3:01 pm by Mrs. Joey

If you looked at the Joey budget, you’d have seen that we tried to budget for everything (except the thank you gifts). We have parking listed, the alcohol license accounted for, and even put a little money away for signs.

But it turns out we already have an unexpected cost. What is it? This…

Unexpected Expense : wedding budget Baby

No, we’re not having a baby, but a lot of our friends and relatives are, or recently have had one. So, what does that mean for us? Well, we’re having to budget for these:

Unexpected Expense : wedding budget Highch

Yes, high chairs. The Lake Union Café has two booster seats, but we have 4 little ones attending who will need high chairs. We also have about three kids that are 2-3 years old. This wasn’t something I was expecting. I’m not complaining; I just wasn’t expecting it. Yes, we could make it an adults-only party, but that does seem right to us. My family has always included kids in events. I can’t imagine what it would be like to get married and not have some of my cousins there. We’re 11 years apart, but we still get along, and during family gatherings, I’d much rather hang out with them than the adults.

So now we’re renting high chairs. I’ve been looking around and I think I found a place that will rent high chairs for $4.50 a day and deliver them to our reception site. That’s not bad. We have an extra $50 we saved from our church and pre-marital counseling fees, so that still keeps us on top by $30.

Have you been surprised by some unplanned expenses? What were they, and did they dent the budget?

You’re way nicer than I am. I’m not at all worried about where babies will sit. That’s why parents have laps. :)

Yeah… I never thought of this. I’m not sure how many of our guests will be babies/toddlers, but its something definitely to consider.

Could you maybe contact the people with small children and ask them their preference so you’re not needlessly renting extras (although $4.50 per day seems way cheap!)? I have zero children so I may be way off on this (and I’m slightly paranoid by nature), but I would be very concerned about the safety of a rental high chair. I feel like a lot of parents these days have alternatives because whenever I go out to dinner, there seem to be very few babies in restaurant-provided high chairs, while most of them tend to be in some contraption the parents brought with them from home. Just a thought because I’m all for saving $$$!!!

One of my biggest worry have been unexpected costs. So far, there hasn’t been any surprises…but I still have less than 6 months to go so I’m sure they’ll pop up eventually!

I’m sure your guests will appreciate the high chairs though! :)

Ditto Cheery that you should confirm with parents about whether or not they will use a high chair. (I’d ask it in a way that doesn’t imply a cost to you - such as saying “our caterer needs to know how many to have on hand.”) Some children sit on laps, etc.

But so good of you to think of it! I’m blushing because we didn’t think of it at our wedding, although we had several infants/toddlers. (Although, we were in the banquet room of a large restaurant which probably could have pulled in some on request).

We had an unexpected addition of gluten-free desserts. We had four guests who couldn’t eat our croquembouche, so we arranged to have flourless chocolate cake slices. Like yours, the cost wasn’t big and we didn’t mind. And our guests really appreciated that we had thought of it.

Ugh. I forgot about these, we probably need some- and we have a few people that will be super preggers too, they better not need special seats too-

I’m so impressed with your budget tracking! I have never thought of high chairs. We’ll need two and I haven’t checked to see if our venue has anything!

I hadn’t thought of high chairs either! I suppose that closer to the date I’ll have a better idea if children will be attending, but this is certainly something to keep in mind!

And yes, totally thought you were going to be budgeting for baby expenses of your own!
