About Mrs. Bruschetta

By the Book

April 14th, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Bruschetta

Question books have a special place in my heart. During the first few months of our relationship, Mr. Bruschetta and I spent hours on the phone, sometimes talking all through the night until the sun started to rise. Since I knew Mr. Bruschetta was a quiet, occasionally shy guy, I was nervous about running out of topics (and not having enough to say is really so unlike me!). So, when the conversation lulled, I’d flip through a book filled with open-ended prompts.

Recently, I stumbled across a wedding-related edition from the same authors.

By the Book : wedding resources Idobo

A few clicks let me preview some of the book’s contents, and I found quite a few interesting questions.

Here are a few of my favorites — and my answers:

1. If you could have any performer perform live at your reception, who would you choose?

We’d definitely have Yo-Yo Ma provide music during dinner! I studied cello from elementary through high school, and love the silky quality of this instrument’s “voice”. (Devoting time once again to this hobby is on my post-wedding to-do list.) Since Mr. Bruschetta’s taste in music is much broader than mine, agreeing on a group to keep our guests dancing would be a tougher decision.

2. If you could spend your wedding night in the honeymoon suite of any hotel in the world, where would you go?

Italy — in particular, somewhere in Rome or Tuscany.

3. You can have any famous chef or foodie plan your menu. Who do you choose?

Our pick — Bobby Flay — would have to work harmoniously with our current caterer, Laurent Leveque of Fleur De Lys Catering. I’m salivating just thinking about the amazing American/French fusion cuisine this dream team would be able to create. (I mean, seriously: Have you ever seen Bobby Flay cook up something that didn’t look extremely appetizing?)

4. You know he is Mr. Right because…

… of all the little ways he demonstrates affection — like kisses on my forehead and packing my lunch when I’m running late in the morning — and the fact that he’s more highly anticipating being married than getting married. (Does that make sense? Mr. Bruschetta’s totally supportive of the wedding we’re planning together, but he’s also very focused on the days that will follow the “I do”.)

I’d love to hear from the hive… post your answers below!

What a fun book! I want to go find this and play :) For the performer, hands down Billy Joel. He’s our performer - our first Valentine’s Day was spent in Philly at one of his concerts. Honeymoon suite - Paris at the Ritz. Chef, I’ll have to ponder this as we aren’t really foodies and Mr Right is easy - he loves me through thick and thin and shows me daily with hugs, kisses, text messages, silly habitual Love Ya Babe’s as he leaves in the morning, and being the only person I can imagine waiting for me at the end of the aisle, by my side when we have our babies and rocking next to me when we’re old. I know cliched!

1. I really have no idea: I don’t really like dancing!

2. This is a tough one. I would love to have a really lavish tropical suite with ocean/private beach views and our own plunge pool. But I’d be equally enthralled with something in Greece, Spain, Italy or France.

3. I don’t know a lot of celebrity chefs, but how about the Ace of Cakes? I do love cake afterall. Just Cake, at my reception. lol. :)

4. Because he’s so thoughtful, selfless, and humble, while also being intelligent and challenging me to be my best.

Cool books. We get stumped for things to talk about on the phone sometimes, too, so I could see how that would be helpful! I don’t know if I could handle the wedding version right now, because *gasp!* I’m kind of getting tired of talking about the wedding all of the time. I bet it would be a great gift for a newly engaged couple.

1. I’d pick Lauren Hill, only because she can sing ballads and she can spit to a hip hop beat. How many performers can sing and rap? Mr. Sushi would probably pick a hip hop artist like Talib Kweli or Little Brother.

2. Fiji, in those cute lil’ huts.

3. I don’t know a lot of chefs either. And to be honest, as long as the food is yummy I’m not too picky. :)

4. He knows how to “handle’ me. :) He knows when to give me space when I’m mad, he knows what to say to make me happy. He cuddles with me, always. He just…is.

We did the questions in “Lies at the Altar: The Truth About Great Marriages” near the beginning of our relationship during our long distance phone calls and it really helped us get to know one another too!

1. If you could have any performer perform live at your reception, who would you choose?

I would love to have Jake Owen, who sings our first dance song, perform as we shared in our first dance.

2. If you could spend your wedding night in the honeymoon suite of any hotel in the world, where would you go?

I would let Samantha Brown (Travel Channel’s Great Hotels host) pick for me :-)

3. You can have any famous chef or foodie plan your menu. Who do you choose?

We’re Southern so Paula Deen!

4. You know he is Mr. Right because…

he makes me laugh. He loves me in a way that is more than my dreams. He shares my values and takes time to listen.

I have this book. Some of the questions helped us to figure out what kind of wedding we really wanted.

1. Mary J. Bilge
2. Curtis Stone- He’s from the show Take Home Chef
3.South Africa- In one of those luxury tents.
4. He accepts me good or bad. Even though he is a shy guy and not great at expressing himself, he has made a huge effort because he knows it makes me happy.

1. Performer: Jack Johnson - hands down!

2. Honeymoon Hotel: Paris - either the Hotel Plaza Athenee or Hotel de Crillon

3. Chef: This is a HARD ONE! My goodness…probably Shawn McClain, Grant Achatz, Harold Dieterle or Rocco DiSpirito (love him!)

4. Why?: He let’s me be me. I let him be him. Yet, we are partners together. It works, trust me :)

#1, I know we have the same answer. There was a band, OTR, we were watching live before we were even engaged and my FI said to me that we should see if they’d play at our wedding. So sentimental!

Great questions! What a neat idea to spur the conversations on.

I want to check out this book!
1- The National. We’re both really big fans, and I think they would be so fun and yet provide a nostalgic tone to our wedding!
2- One of my friends showed me the W Maldives as a potential honeymoon spot and the pics looks stunning- I’d go there if I had the $$$!
3- Hung from Top Chef (was that season 3, I think?) We both think he’s one of the most talented chefs from that show!!
4- He challenges me, and loves me unconditionally, makes me laugh and is totally honest!

Fun post! :)
#1-Edwin McCain-We don’t just love his hits like “I’ll be”, we are true Edwin fans. I grew up listening to his cd’s with my mother and funny enough so did my fiancee!
We love Edwin and have even met him a few times.
We inquired about having him perform but it was of course over budget. :(
#2- Italy as well! Probably in a big suite on the Isle of Capri! I don’t know if it can get more romantic than that!
#3- I’m a huge foodie as well so this one is tough! But since I’m from the south and our wedding has a Southern Rustic theme I’d have to say Mrs. Paula Deen!
I’m a fan of fried chicken and I know she does it right!
#4-My fiancee and I have dated for over seven years now. We met my freshman year of college and have definitely grown up together.
A lot of couples who start dating early grow apart instead of in the same direction.
We’ve gotten better over time!
After 2 and half years of long distance we now live in the same city in the same house and life is better than ever.
We’re best friends who really get one another!

1. Performer: Ting Tings or Duran Duran?? I like double names.
2. Honeymoon suite dream: This is a tough one. We LOVE boutique hotels. Funky ones. Perhaps something designed by Philippe Starck, like Jia in Hong Kong.
3. Chef to plan our menu: Heston Blumenthal (or any chef with Michelin stars)!!!!!! It would be totally experimental and out of this world!
4. Mr. Right because: He’s true.

Great book and questions!!

1. Andrea Bocelli. He was my mom’s favorite, and in an effort to incorporate my mom into the ceremony I will be walking down to the prayer. I think it would be awesome if our guests could hear him sing during dinner. as well
2. we would love an isolated bungalow right on the water, where we could wake up and surf or scuba every morning maybe bali, or somewhere in Mexico
3. Anthony Bourdane or Rick Bayless. there will be Mexicanish theme as a nod to my heritage and I think they would be awesome
4. He knows me like no one else, and since the moment my mom asked him to take care of me, he has never let her down

1 - Michael Buble - He has been a favorite of both of ours since the beginning of our relationship. We always joked about how much it would cost to have him at our wedding.
2 - This one is hard - SO MANY CHOICES!!
3 - Chef Eric Ripert - FH loves french food and Chef Ripert is the best :)
4 - because I can be myself around him, I don’t have to pretend to me someone I’m not, he loves me just the way I am and I love him just that way he is :)

What a cute book! I actually got a similar book called All About Me as a pre-law school gift so I don’t lose sight of who I am while in school. haha.
1. Leona Lewis. Her voice is so angelic!
2. Some 5-star hotel in Italy would be awesome
3. No idea
4. I can be a “fireball” (his words) but he knows my heart and sees past my temper and has endless patience for me. And he knows me better than anyone else in this world. Sometimes I feel like he knows me better than I know myself.

So fun! I love books like this!
1. So tough! I like diversity in my music, so it would be hard picking just one band. I’d prefer a top notch DJ over a band, I like hearing songs from the originator.
2. The suite at Cinderella’s Castle at Disneyland for part one, then a suite at a five star hotel on a super exotic island!
3. So tough! I think I would go with the chef who created Ruth’s Chris menu, I love butter and they know how to use it! Then I’d want Duff from Ace of Cakes to create our wedding cake.
4. He completes me….jk. He is everyhting I’m not, but I like that, we kind of do complete each other. We learn from each other. I also never thought I could love someone so much. He makes me genuinely happy no matter how bad I’m feeling, he can turn my mood around. I like the way we make each other feel. :)

1. Jason Mraz. Because dancing to your first song LIVE would be awesome.
2. The Ice Hotel. Because FI and I are facinated by it and it’s definitely not your average honeymoon locale!
3. I’m going with any of the judges from Top Chef (except Padma…). That would ROCK!
4. I know he is Mr. Right because we understand each other…even when we’re tired and hungry and REALLY grumpy we can still be loving with each other. Now THAT’S love!
