Changing My Dress

April 14th, 2009 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Joey

Oh no, I haven’t changed my mind about my dress. I’m still going with the fabulous short number by Liza Rietz. I’ve just asked her if a little change is possible.

I love the dress as is, and would wear it as she designed it, but for some reason, only recently did I realize that me and crew necklines are not a flattering pair. I have wide boobs (yes, I said it), and a crew neckline highlights their wideness. I don’t really know how to explain it better than that. I’m sure a push-up bra would help, but I also know a scoop neck does wonders. So I emailed Liza and asked her if a small scoop neck was at all possible. Thankfully, she said yes, and proposed a change.

This is her original design:

And this is the change to the neckline:

I love it. I also love that I can now wear a necklace.

Did you modify your wedding dress in order to make it flatter your body better? Were you happy with the results?

OH i love that much more. I think that is gorgeous. I think there is something sort of retro airline stewardess about it with a crew neckline.

I keep seeing that dress on etsy, and I fall a little more in love with it every time. I’m so glad you chose it as The Dress, both for style points and all the implications of choosing an etsy seller.

The new neckline looks great!

I love your dress so much. It’s hawt. I can’t wait to see it on you. I would have done the same with the neck; I tried on a dress this weekend that had a super-high neck - that was just a no no! No room for a pretty necklace at all.

Oh yeah, and to answer your question, I had covered buttons added to my dress and had them minimize the beading on the bodice. I like it so much more now.

I put sleeves on my dress- which originally had only thin beaded straps. I wanted my arms covered because I really didn’t want to hate wedding pictures of me with fat arms exposed. I’m glad I did, because I really love how I looked in the dress.

Love the change! It looks a lot more delicate, if that makes sense.

Boy, looking at your dress makes me want to forgo the fancy A-line I’ve been eying….

As a fellow ‘wide boob’ bride- I totally get ya. Love the change. I added a halter strap to my dress to cover up the ‘arm pit fat.’

I am tall, so I am having the “natural” waist turned into a “dropped” waist so my torso doesn’t look squatty…

I did….I have super flabby arms and armpit fat (there I said it!) after losing 185 lbs. So my beautiful strapless dress now has a beautiful jacket with 3/4 sleeves to cover me up. It is very short so you can still see all the beading in the from and back, with just a simple crystal neckline. I am also over 6 feet tall, and even with all the added length I could order my dress in, and me being practically barefooted, I may have to find a way to add more length to my dress…it is a skoosh too short

Cute dress! I have a friend who is contemplating a simple courthouse wedding and I might send the link to her, if you don’t mind!:-)

I’m making several changes to my dress - I’m adding off-the-shoulder sleeves (I HAAATE my upper arms) and I’m turning the neckline from straight across into a sweetheart/vneck.

I’m taking the bow and brooch off my dress and replacing it with a black sash and may add the brooch back but not sure yet. Also, the wonderful mama of our very own Cheesy will be making me a gorgeous shrug to cover up the arm pit fat.

I agree with the others, your dress is HAWT! Can’t wait to see it on you :)

So cute! I’m making a weird alteration…deepening the armpits. Yeah…so the lace doesn’t scratch. Odd I know :)

@Mrs. Sushi: I really wanted a dress I could wear again. :)
@monitajb: that totally makes sense.
@Miss Peep Toe: Yay for wide boobs? I don’t want to think about arm pit fat yet!
@DCKate: send her the link. Liza is awesome and tailors each dress to the buyers size if needed.
@Miss D’orsay: I totally understand. I had a few dresses I stopped wearing for that reason.

Oh your dress is just so charming and the new neckline is so sweet! You will be a darling bride. I didn’t make changes to my dress, but I almost had to change my dress due to some horrid medicine packing pounds and punds on me!! Luckily, I beat those nasty meds and wore my dreamy dress!!

I’ve never heard the term “wide boobs” before, but it’s totally me. My SO and I have a running joke about the fact that I wear a D-cup yet have no cleavage to speak of. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone!

I just adore your dress! Those are great changes to flatter your body :)
There were a couple of dresses I tried on that I wanted to change the neckline to sweetheart, but that dress I ended up purchasing was sweetheart, so I didn’t need to change anything :)

I love the change. And if I find a dress that I absolutely love I would totally modify it to flatter my body. One of my favorite lines in Monster-in-Law is when J.Lo says she’s making the dress to fit her body, not the other way around! :)
