About Mrs. Stiletto

Google and Ye Shall Find

April 14th, 2009 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Somewhere along the way, flower uncertainty had taken hold of me. I’m all over the map here. I’ve seriously considered anemones, but the chances are high that they will not be in season for our Saturday in September. Integrating hypericum berries has stayed on the list, but they’re more of an accent than a feature, and probably will be an accent for the bridesmaids, not for moi. I’ve even gone as far as to contemplate the bouquet stem, as you may remember.

The criteria for my bouquet included the following: that they be white, interesting, unique, and full of texture. Oh yeah, and in season in September, please!

All kidding aside, it’s really important to me that I have strong inspiration photos to take along with me when I meet with our florist in a couple of months. When someone else gets really excited, I quite often will agree with them… only to end up walking away with something that I don’t want. I tend to be too much of a people pleaser, and usually get taken in a completely different direction than the one I had originally wanted to go in. This is how I ended up with bright orange hair upon leaving a salon a few years back. I most definitely don’t want the equivalent of “Raggedy Ann hair” when my wedding bouquet is handed over to me.

When searching, I found three flowers that all come in white and fulfill all of my requirements: ranunculus, hydrangea, and dahlias. Through the magic of Google Images, I plugged ’ranunculus, hydrangea, and dahlia bouquet’ in the search field, and voila! Some great options came my way that were fluffy, white, and unique, using varied combinations of my desired flowers.

Inspiration #1

This bride’s bouquet incorporates dahlias, ranunculus, sweet pea, hyacinth, gardenias, and hydrangeas. Just so you’re keepin’ up with me, this bouquet apparently has all of my target flowers, and then some! I love how much texture they’ve managed to get out of all white flowers. I think my florist could do something lovely with these three, plus a few other whites (as was done here) to achieve the great texture.

What also really caught my eye was the bridesmaid bouquet to the left of the bride. This is a great way to feature the dahlia, and I could integrate hypericum berries into the bridesmaids’ bouquets to get that extra texture and green in there, without being over the top. I love it! No matter what I end up doing for mine, I think this is a strong contender as inspiration for the bridesmaids. I’m not able to budget a lot for their bouquets, so I want to incorporate flowers with blooms that can really fill some space!

Inspiration #2

This bouquet features carnations, dahlias, ranunculus and spider mums. So, two of my picks are featured here, but if I wanted to, I could probably recreate this entire bouquet—I believe all of these flowers would be in season in September. I like the textures here, but I’m not a huge fan of spider mums. It also looks like there are roses in the bouquet, but the description didn’t say so. Moving on…

Inspiration #3

This lovely bouquet includes hydrangea, peonies, roses, ranunculus, tulips and dusty miller. The dusty miller is lovely for an added touch of something special for a winter wedding. It’s probably not as great for a September wedding, though. What grabbed me was the fullness of this bouquet, and how “fluffy” it seems. It’s very romantic.

So, I think #1 and #3 are probably leading the way for me. I’m really determined right now to work dahlias into the overall scheme, because my centerpieces are just going to feature single stems, and I think dahlias would look perfect for this. I also really enjoy these great pom balls I’ve been seeing around (such as from Etsy seller Pom Love), which I think are so dahlia-esque.

Do you favor #1, #2, or #3? Are there any white flowers that are in season in September that I haven’t thought of (excluding orchids, roses and calla lilies… they’re all great, just not for me)?

I like #1. Is that why you put it first — do you favor it too? It seems like you have the best things to say about it!

I love #1! Do you know for sure if ranunculus are in season in September? I was told by my florist that she would have a hard time getting them for our September wedding, so we opted for dahlias instead.

@mary-alice-me:
Hmm, maybe I do favor 1 the most…sometimes your true feelings come out when you blog ;)

@Miss Mascara:
Hmm. Good point. Some web sites say that it is for September, others not. I haven’t had a conversation about ranunculus with my florist because I just started looking at them this week, but I’ll keep ya tuned with what I find out ;) Oh, flower drama!

A girl after my own heart- Dahlias are my favorite!! I am keeping my fingers crossed to have them for my wedding- although, I saw a street vendor selling them last week- so I took that as a good sign.

I love 1…its sooo fluffy and lovely.

I would inquire about ranunculuses (is that the plural or is is ranuncului? lol) They are a spring flower. Out here in Cali they bloom April to May. I wanted them for my June wedding on Cape Cod and my florist said it will probably be too late. Sure flowers can be shipped from South America, but with that the expense goes way up.

@PrettyKitty:
I’m actually emailing my florist as we speak! I’ve seen that their season starts in December, I’ve seen September, every web site seems to say something different. Sigh. We’ll see what happens ;) Regardless, I want some fluff, whatever flower it ends up being!

Dahlias and ranunculus are leading the pack in my wedding too, more so because my colors are deep purple and fuschia (along with black and white)…and those flowers some in those colors…and they are not terribly expensive…I originally wanted peonies, alas, they are not in season when I am getting married….love all your choices though!

@Miss Stiletto: I agree, why does it have to be sooo confusing! I wish all the florists and flowers can make up their mind about their season.

I agree..more fluff more happy! :)

I am using dahlias, I am DIYing the flowers and haven’t thought beyond them. I’m getting my flowers from a local farm near Seattle, Yea! If you want that fluffy look a few white carnations might add just enough softness without looking cheap mixed with the structural look of dahlias. By the way, I met a cute little girl named Dahlia today.

I’m not sure if your florist would be amenable to this, but fiftyflowers.com sells anemones year round. If you still really wanted them, perhaps you could order from there?

I am planning on buying my flowers online and assembling them myself. For some reason, the only white anemones I can find online have pale centers. If anyone knows where to get white anemones with black centers, I’d really appreciate the info!

I LOVE ranunculus. That was my one flower I said to my florist. We’re in October. She said she’d try. :-)

Of your 3, I like #3 best. I love dusty miller, we’re having that, too. We’re also have the hypericum berries, but the pinkish ones, not the green ones.
