The Scoop on Our Honeymoon

April 14th, 2009 @ 3:33 pm by Mrs. Duckling

Well, we have officially booked our honeymoon, and I am so excited! As I’ve mentioned before, we have been looking forward to the honeymoon for a while. It will be my first real break after finishing graduate school, and will be the first time that we will have time away and will have nothing to worry about. With that in mind, we really wanted to go somewhere that was beautiful, where we could relax, and still have lots of options if we wanted to go do something.

Well, our criteria brought us to Hanalei Bay Resort on the North Shore of Kauai. We love Kauai because it is so beautiful and is not overly populated or developed. Now what’s the “scoop”? I want to share the awesome deal we found, and hopefully it will help if you are also planning a honeymoon on a budget. But first, I have to share the view from our shower!!

The Scoop on Our Honeymoon : wedding honeymoon 19 1

Yes this is the view from the shower alone! Amazing! And don’t worry, it’s not a full exposure window, but you can make it fog, so people can’t see in and think they are getting a show! Ha ha. Anyways, I just thought that it was funny that the shower has such a great view!

When we started looking into different resorts and hotels, we were finding that a lot of the rooms started at around $300 a night for a view of a garden or a mountain, and then the ocean view rooms were through the roof. This would be great if we could afford that option, but we are on a budget, and didn’t want to use all our money on just the hotel.

We next turned to looking at privately owned timeshares and condos.

Specifically, we looked at the Hanalei Bay Resort, where my family has rented condos from before. The facility really is a resort with a full lobby, concierge services, restaurant, bar, pool etc., but some of the rooms are privately owned, and listed on various websites. In our experience, the privately owned ones have better views than the rooms you would get booking through the hotel! The resort shares a private beach with the gorgeous and soon-to-be reopened St. Regis Princeville Hotel. This means you can also use their facilities if you want to get drinks or walk to some other yummy restaurants. The beach is down a private beach path, and if you are tired after a day in the sun, they will shuttle you back to your room. The staff is really friendly and helpful.

After doing lots of research and price comparisons, we found a newly renovated studio with an incredible view for $160 a night! You think this is a good deal? After the owner found out we were honeymooning and on a budget, he lowered our rate to $120 a night! How is that for “aloha spirit”? I guess it shows you that it never hurts to ask, and you never know what people will do to make your honeymoon extra special!

Here are some pictures of place we are staying, so that you can get an idea of what it looks like:

It is just perfect for what we need, and allows us to save a lot of money for some of the fun excursions we are planning. We thought about maybe spending a few nights at one of the resorts, but after getting such a great deal, we decided to spend our whole stay at the Hanalei Bay Resort. I just wish we were going sooner. I’m looking forward to enjoying the beautiful scenery, and of course, spending quality time with Mr. Ducky.

The gorgeous and secluded beach! You never have to worry about getting a spot down on the beach, since only 2 resorts share the area. It also has some great snorkeling!

If you are interested in looking for your own condo or rental, I’ve listed a few of the websites that we used. Some of the websites have rentals anywhere you can imagine! Now, an important thing to keep in mind is that because they are privately owned, the interiors are all decorated differently, and some have been recently remodeled. Mr. Ducky and I found a remodeled one, so the shower, bathroom and kitchenette have all been upgraded. There are all types of rentals, from ultra-fancy and upgraded places, down to ones that have never been updated since the resort was originally built. It just kind of depends what you are looking for, but I’m sure there is something will appeal to everyone. Just spend time looking at all the websites and checking out the different pictures.

These are links specific to the Hanalei Bay Resort, but you can figure out how to get back to their main pages.

What have you done to save money on your honeymoon? Do you have any recommendations for fun excursions, activities, or restaurants in Kauai?

yum, yum. We briefly considered a tropical honeymoon and we were all about Kuai. There is definitely an anniversary trip here some time in the future!

To save money, we are renting a penthouse apartment (in a luxury skyrise in NYC) instead of booking a hotel suite. We went through a agency and ended up spending about $2,500 for the whole week vs $4,600 for the hotel penthouse we were looking at. Plus we don’t have to pay all the taxes hotels charge on you. We have the whole 26th floor to ourselves, floor to ceiling windows that overlook times square, and a balcony. Mr. Static and I are not the beach type…we are definately more the urban cowboy type!

We saved money on our honeymoon by going to Costa Rica (our second choice - first choice was Maui). I’ve been to Kauai though and LOVED it!!

I’d highly recommend snorkeling near Hanalei and a helicopter ride around the island! One thing I regret not doing was taking a sunset cruise off the Napali coast…I’ve heard it’s SO beautiful.

Have a great time…and don’t forget to eat a lot of shave ice!!!

You *must* do a boat tour around the Napali Coast. A boat tour is the only way you can really see it all and take it in plus the tours usually include lunch and snorkeling. It was by far the most memorable experience from my trip there.

Oh, what fun! Great job on finding a deal in an amazing location. And, lucky you - as a west coaster, I’m sure airfare is more reasonable than for us midwesterners :( That was the main reason we didn’t look at Hawaii. Sigh. I’m sure you’re going to have a lovely time!

Get a copy of the guidebook, Kauai Revealed: http://www.wizardpub.com/Kauai/kauai.html. I’m normally not a guidebook person, but this is the best ever. It has restaurant reviews, cool hikes, tour reviews. It was awesome.

Ohhh that is SO exciting and an amazing deal! I went to Kauai on business and brought two of my girlfriends and we had a BLAST. I would suggest a helicopter ride - hands down coolest thing I’ve ever done. Plus, make sure you go down to the southern side of the island and check out 1) Roys and 2) Puka Dog! Roys is a Hawaiian institution and Puka Dog is totally unique and delish (if you like hot dogs!). Also down by poipu beach is blow horn - a lava shoot that makes this awesome sound as water rushes up through it. You will have the BEST time! Congrats! Hope you’re feeling well after the procedure!

We just back from a honeymoon in Kauai, and we also stayed in a timeshare (my grandparents own a timeshare in Utah, and we traded their week there for a week in Hawaii).

We stayed at the Aston Islander on the Beach in Kapaa for only $700 for the entire week, and we loved it - it’s a great way to honeymoon on a bargain!

Also, while you’re in Kauai, some cool things to do - ziplining at Princeville Ranch Adventures (they also do horseback riding and hikes), a boat tour with Captain Andy’s, definitely eat at the Hukilau Lanai (it was rated as the top restaurant in Kauai on TripAdvisor and it was AMAZING!), and we didn’t do a helicopter tour (he was afraid, lol) but everyone told me they were awesome too!

We were glad we saved $ on accomodations so we could spend on excursions!

We saved money by using our frequent flyer miles to get our flight to Belize. This is going to let us stay at a nicer place and a couple of extra days!

Thanks for all the advice ladies! I’m going to add it to our list of ideas. We have done Captain Andy’s tour of the Napali coast before and loved it. I think we are going to try to do that again. And I need to go to this Puka Dog! Has anyone ever tried the shaved ice at the Wishing Well van in Hanalei? It looks kind of shady but is seriously the best shaved ice I have ever had!

@tinyee: PM me and I would be happy to give the full breakdown of what we did. We went through one of the websites I listed above but then contacted the owner directly through one of the links to ask what the best deal was. I would be more than happy to share all the specifics but don’t want to have a mile long paragraph here. If you want to go to Kauai I think this is an awesome way to do it!
