About Mrs. Bee

Weddingbee Book Club!

April 14th, 2009 @ 6:06 pm by Mrs. Bee

Weddingbee focuses on all aspects of the wedding planning process, from the proposal to the honeymoon and everything in between.  But we’ve always wanted to place more emphasis on how to improve and maintain healthy relationships with our significant others, which is far more important than the actual wedding day.  So we’re very excited to announce the first ever Weddingbee Book Club, where we’ll read and discuss books on how to improve our relationships and marriages!

Here’s how it’s going to work: Each month a different Bee will host the book club by writing a synopsis of the chosen selection on the blog.  Then anyone can start threads under the new “Book Club” forums we’ll be creating, where all of us will discuss the book at length.

This month’s selection is The Seven Principles for Making a Marriage Work by John Gottman, which is available for purchase on Amazon for $10.17.  I’ve already purchased my copy!

Our first book club host will be Miss Duckling, who has a degree in clinical psychology and marriage and family therapy.  She’ll also be attending a conference next month featuring John Gottman as a speaker, so she’ll have extra insight into our first selection!

Please pick up a copy of The Seven Principles and read it by May 17th so we can all start discussing it together!  And if you have any book recommendations or suggestions for improving our book club, please feel free to comment below! :)

this is such a great book! his work is fully validated (scientifically) and has some great lessons. the trick though is applying those lessons. my husband (boyfriend then) and i read this two years ago and tried to work on fighting better. . .. we still fall into some of his categories, but it’s always worth trying. good pick, bee!

What a great idea! A couple of years ago I read a book called the Care and Nurturing of a Husband by Dr. Laura. I can’t remember her last name and I don’t agree with everything she says, but it is a great book and really makes you think about the differences between men and women.

ooh, this is exciting. can the fiances be involved in the bookclub too? since we’re in a relationship with them. it would be weird if it was one sided knowledge, know what i mean.

@cj2009: I think it would be great if the fiances participated! I’m not sure I can get Mr. Ducky to read the whole book (he rarely finishes a book), but I’ll be writing a synopsis so hopefully he can read that and chime in. It is always great to get some male perspectives.

I’m really looking forward to reading with everyone and being able to talk about all our different insights and experiences.

This is such a good idea. I’ve always wanted to join a bookclub but could never fit the meeting times into my schedule. This is perfect. Thanks for a good pick Miss Duckling.

I just ordered the book with hopes that I’ll have time to read it between now and May 17th. I’m not sure how active I’ll be in the discussions with the wedding and all going on around then, but I think it will be a good book to read regardless.

Thanks for getting this started, Miss Duckling!

I think this is such a great idea! So many wedding sites focus on the creating your “perfect day” as opposed to working towards your “perfect marriage.”

I’m sorry this isn’t related to the post, but I have a question for Mrs. Bee.

My username is AnnieAAA and for some reason I can’t log in, and keep getting the message “invalid username” can you help me?

I haven’t read his book but I studied a lot of his idea (especially about arguing) in my communication classes in collage. I LOVE his stuff. My fav professor recommends this book and even gives it out as wedding/shower presents to a lot of the weddings she attends. I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things. Happy reading! :)
