Table Numbers and What Knot…

April 15th, 2009 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Gloss

We could do table numbers…1, 2, 3, 4, etc…

Or, we could do table knots… overhand, figure eight, slip knot, etc., to tie in with our semi-nautical ’rope’ theme.

Table Numbers and What Knot... : wedding decor reception Knottab Even after a few Google searches, I could not come up with 15 cute ’knot’ names - it’s waay harder than it seems at first glance. So, I bought a book on knots… I know—don’t judge. Yup, I am the proud owner of ’What Knot’, which has 7 fun-filled chapters on tying knots AND ’the lure and lore of knots’ (BONUS!). The part that really gets me is that I was super excited to buy a book about knots…

Anyway, I found some cute ’knot names’ for our tables:

  • Overhand Knot
  • Angler’s Loop
  • Miller’s Knot
  • Reef Knot
  • Surgeon’s Knot
  • Buntline Hitch
  • Handcuff Knot (*Sweetheart table potential?)
  • Figure Eight Knot
  • Stevedore Knot
  • Bowline
  • Clove Hitch
  • Midshipman’s Hitch
  • Snuggle Hitch (*Sweetheart table potential?)
  • Butterfly Loop
  • Farmer’s Loop

So, I need your help!

How should I display the table names?

I think it would be fun to have the illustrated knots and then have a ribbon or twine on the table (perhaps tied around the napkins) so your guests could practice. Whatever you do, I think the knots are a really neat idea. Nautical and nuptial!

I’m not a knot expert, but from what I do know they can be really difficult to tie.
I love the idea of actually tying and displaying the knot, but if too difficult I think a cute illustration could work even better! :)

I voted for “just write the name of the knot” but you could do so with a cute rope-like font :-)

Oh I like Mrs Cupcakes idea I am sure there are cute rope fonts. Otherwise I would go for the illustration. You don’t want to worry about how to figure out how to tie all those (well maybe you do). But an illustration would be able to show the differences.

You could also tie the knots in a thinner rope and put it in a frame with the label. That way, the knot won’t have any chances of coming undone, and you’ll still have the more “authentic” feel of having the knot actually tied (versus a picture).

I like the rope font idea, although I did vote for tying the knot to the sign, I think that would be so cute and unexpected!

I think an illustration of the knot would be a nice addition, but I would certainly make the name the focal point! I can’t really see an actual rope knot coming together as a table label.

Such a cute idea! So different, and definitely fits with your nautical theme. Maybe you could hand the sign from a holder, and secure it with rope tied in each specific, varied knot? (Does that make sense?)

have you seen this from the Curiosity Shoppe?

It could spark some ideas for you - I love the look of the graphics.

At $10 it probably is a bit to pricey for favors, but maybe you can have one at every table?

i voted for tying the knots and attaching them–it’s such a cute idea! but i also love mrs. cupcake’s idea.

oh, there is some scrapbooking material that is like a sticker, but it’s made of rope. i used it for some of my nephew’s pictures. it would be super cute to write the name of the table in–and it’s really easy to use.

I voted for “Illustrate the knot on a sign with a label” and provide the guests with a piece of rope or twine to practice. This interactive and a conversation-starter and you won’t be stuck trying to do intricate knot-tying the night before!

What an absolutely brilliant idea! I like the idea of displaying the actual knot, especially with some really great rope (would have to research that to verbalize it better). But I like the idea of making the guests tie it as well! Cute!

I should have mentioned that we are planning on tying the napkins with rope at each place setting. Right now the votes are mostly for A & B - so maybe I do them both? Illustration with actual knot tied below - and then guests can practice with their ropes?
And one person admited they were a ‘rope guru’ - identify yourself!! (only if you want to help me tie knots! :) )

I would tie the knots with real rope and re name them something different if the name its “cute” just to make it even a little bit more your own.

I just wanted to say what a cute idea for table numbers. I think it would go lovely with your theme. I did have an idea after reading your comment above (no sorry I am not the “rope guru” you are looking for). It might be a little more work but could be fun. You could print up little how-to cards for each table to match the knot name. You could slip them in with the napkins and then maybe even put information on the back of the cards for guests to upload photos to a website if you are in fact going that route. Could be a little added fun for everyone and help with spreading the word to upload photos. Just a thought. :)
