White is Right (?)

I went in for my semi-annual dental cleaning yesterday morning. As an afterthought, I asked the dentist about teeth whitening, and the next thing I knew they were taking a plaster mould of my mouth. He said I was a good candidate, as I have healthy teeth and gums and my teeth could use some brightening.

(See how yellow my teeth are on the chart thing? I marked it myself.)

The dentist said that, given the time frame, I should be okay to bleach for the next month or so, but need to start right away. He doesn’t advocate the in-office, one-hour procedure, as it causes extreme sensitivity, is expensive, and the results aren’t that good. So I believed him. And when he said the in-office procedure was expensive, I thought the implication was that the gradual, fitted-mouth tray approach would be more reasonable in comparison. So when I checked out, I was surprised to be charged $400 (separate from the cleaning)!!!

Apparently, the big initial investment is the custom-moulded tray. The bleach solution is not very expensive, but the key is to have a snug fit with the tray. He says the over the counter-brands are okay, but they won’t give the whitening effect that I want because of the loose delivery mechanism (rubber hot-water-moulded strips or film strips).

They were very quick about creating the trays, and I picked them up that afternoon. The doc instructed me on how to apply the solution and used an initial (strong) 45% solution that I wore for about 30 minutes (the one I would use would be 20% and I’d wear it overnight). I must say the custom trays are amazing! I’ve done over the counter bleaching before and my gums always got irritated because the trays were never snug enough (so I never followed through with it). These moulded trays are incredible; they feel snug and no bleach leaks to the back of my throat or up towards my gums. My teeth were a little sensitive afterwards, though.

Last night I followed the directions and put some solution in the tray, being careful not to put too much of it along the bottom part of the tray, as excess amounts would be too harsh for my teeth and burn my gums (and waste the product, oh no!). I wore them overnight without a problem and took them out in the morning to reveal noticeably whiter teeth. Now I’m not talking 10 shades whiter, but definitely an improvement.

So I’m supposed to wear them every night this week, then switch to every other night for the remaining weeks until the wedding! Inevitably, there will be some sensitivity, so I’m supposed to go back and see the dentist in a couple weeks to check the progress and get some magic salve or something if my teeth get too uncomfortably sensitive.

I hope I don’t end up with blinding white Chiclets, looking like Regis Philbin (or worse, Steve Wynn):

My dentist says that your teeth should not be whiter than the whites of your eyes. Wish me luck!!!

What’s your experience with teeth whitening? What products have you found to be effective?

Good luck! I have very white teeth, but did the same procedure as you around 6 or 7 years ago (custom moulds, etc). I’ve never had to do it again! That could just be because my teeth are already pretty white, so who knows!

I had major gum sensitivity, though!

I’m whitening mine right now! I’ve also been using Sensodyne toothpaste to help with the sensitivity, so you might want to check that out.

I am about to embark on the same adventure; I just picked up my trays today!

I did Zoom with custom at home trays and the whole thing only cost me $500. My dentist gave me discount for my wedding but he also said the major expense is the custom trays.

Zoom didn’t give me any major lasting sensitivity (just for a few hours after) and it made a huge impact right away. I was really happy with the results.

The trays have been great too, oh and there is relieve gel and vitamin e gel if your gums and teeth get too senstive.

I’ve used the same procedure and it is great. I used them every day for 2 weeks, and there was a very noticeable difference, much more than when I used WhiteStrips, and it lasted a lot longer.
It’s been about 2 years since then and I now just touch up about once a month or so.

I am doing the trays now also. The first time I used them, I used too much and had some very uncomfortable gums. I learned my lesson and have scaled back on the amount of gel I put in.

I think I am going to try Crest White Strips. I have sensitive teeth so hopefully it works.

For bleaching, you should never expect to get 10 shades whiter (it’s more like 4-6 shades at best). White chicklet teeth are usually veneers (notice he has that gloss/shine to his teeth? it’s because they’re veneers. If you bleached your teeth that white, they would lose the glossy-ness because you’re actually destroying your teeth at that point). Keep in mind that “rebound” is a huge factor in teeth whitening. Drink only clear liquids and through a straw if you happen to drink something that stains or has color (natural or artificial).

If you have a lot of sensitivity (like if you suck in air and your teeth *feel* it), you can always get flouride paste or use a NON-ALCOHOL flouride rinse.

He’s bang on about teeth not being whiter than the eyes. It’s actually more aesthetic to have pearl white (A2 colored teeth). We sell A2 colored veneers the most as they are natural and white and beautiful. We always try to steer patients away from getting the chicklet white/movie star white because under certain lighting, it can look super green (like black lights or Reveal lights (from phillips).

Once you get to your ideal tooth shade, you don’t have to keep doing it once every other day. Just go for once a week as a “touch up”. Long term maintenance requires an overnight touch up once a month to keep the color. If you drink a lot of colored drinks, well, you’ll have to do it more often.

NO WINE UNTIL THE WEDDING. Your teeth are porous and trust me when I say that it will suck up all the red wine. No spaghetti or anything tomato based either if you are short on time and the wedding is coming up.

I have to agree with your dentist on the in office proceedure, I had it done a couple years ago and oh-my-goodness was I in pain!!! Was worse then getting my wisdom teeth pulled and that was definitely no fun either. The trays are definitely a less painful/easier way to go. Keep us posted on the progress!!

I used the Crest White Strips Supreme/Professional before the wedding. I only used less than half the box (frequently not more than once a day) and got beautiful teeth. They were cheap on Amazon ($50 I think?) and I still have a bunch left over.

The downside is that the peroxide is gross and made me feel gassy/nauseous. Sometimes my teeth were quite sensitive for a few hours after the treatment, too.

I just picked up the Advance Seal crest strips last night. Let me tell you — worth the extra $$. They actually stay put and don’t make me drool all over myself like others I’ve tried.

I have tried the whitestrips one time and had a hard time keeping the strips on because of all the drool from having something weird in my mouth! I need to try them again super soon, because I could use the help!

Thanks for the informative post! I have used Crest White Strips in the past with good results… after 10 days of using them just once a day, I was pleased with the color. (The box contains 30 days’ worth for two uses a day, so I have a lot left over.) I didn’t have any negative side effects, so I guess I’m lucky! I’m a big coffee and red wine drinker, though, so it didn’t last too long.

I have been using Wal-Marts version of Crest Stips and I have noticed a slight change but I am still on week 1. I just wish the package came with different shades so I could compare the before and after.

Maybe for my next cleaning I should ask my dentist about whitening

That’s good advice about your teeth not being whiter than the whites of your eyes. Over-bleached teeth are so noticeable, it’s hard not to stare sometimes :S
I used Crest Whitestrips for a while and though they do work pretty well, I did experience some sensitivity…

I’ve been meaning to whiten my not-so-pearly whites for awhile now. That’s on my wedding checklist. Thanks for the reminder! I’ll probably go with the Crest strips.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
