Cardinal Cake Toppers

April 16th, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Lollipop

I’ve never understood why wedding cake toppers are so effing expensive. Even the boring plastic ones run more than $30 for a set. Plastic birthday cake cowboys, however, are about $1 each, further proof that anything involving the word ’wedding’ comes with a premium attached.

That’s why I like making wedding cake toppers; it’s almost like performing a public service. Today I made a set of cardinal cake toppers out of polymer clay. After I placed the two bright red birds side by side it suddenly clicked in my head that only male cardinals have that kind of coloring. The females are more of a dove gray.

I looked up cardinals to see if there were any sub-species where the females exhibit the same bright red feathers, but nope, it’s sexual dimorphism all the way down.

So, I made a female bird with the correct coloring. She’s sparkly, just like her male counterparts.

But they don’t seem to be very interested in her. I don’t know, I guess the two male cardinals match the picture in my head better.

Are you making your own cake toppers?  What do they look like?

Those are adorable. I appreciate the dull colored females because when I was a child, my father told me how lucky I was to be a little girl because in people, the females are more attractive than the males, unlike birds, ducks, etc. So your two colors would have a special meaning for me!

I love it!
We are making out own. Ok correction. the SISTER IN LAW is making them :-)
We love our dog but she cannot be a part of the ceremony, so we are going to have a little version of our dog…and maybe little clay “us” too :-)

I absolutely love these. Being from St. Louis (and a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals fan), these toppers would be adorable!

Oh these are so precious! I really didn’t even think about a cake topper for my wedding-we had some fresh flowers on top. I am inspired by you and Miss Stiletto to get a fun cake topper for my anniversary cake!

Ironically we made cardinals for our cake topper too. Well, ok, my Dad made them, but they were still not store (or internet) bought! Yours are so cute, you did a great job with them!

They are so cute! I love how the female cardinal sparkles! Great detailing, I especially love the eyes!
Ah, if only this post existed 1 month ago - I just recently received my custom topper. I had to outsource (so embarrassing) but I outsourced to an industrial company that makes material products and NOT cake toppers… so its almost like I made it myself! hehe Okay, I’ll wake up now.

I’ve finished making my own topper for my Aug wedding. I needle-felted two birds on a stand. It will be featured on my blog closer to my wedding.

I totally love both your red birds! They are adorable. And yes i agree. It’s so much better making your own than buying because they end up costing an arm and a leg. Happy wedding!

they’re awesome! I wish i had found something like this before our wedding - we used flowers on top, which was very pretty, because all the cake toppers i found were so cheesy and expensive!
