I’m back from my first fitting! And let me tell you, it was a whirlwind—I laughed, I cried… I went through a whole range of emotions. So come along with me on this little journey into the wonderful, and sometimes dangerous, world of bridal gown fittings.
First, the giddy laughter.
After an hour-and-a-half drive in the dreary, rainy, Michigan spring weather, my mom and I arrived at the bridal salon, and I’ll admit it—I was nervous. I couldn’t wait to see my dress! Would I still love it after all these months? After a frightening couple of minutes when the saleswoman seemed unable to find my dress in the back room (eek!), she finally emerged with it and I nearly ripped it out of her hands. I wanted that dress on my body, STAT!
When it was finally on and zipped, I popped out of the dressing room to look in the mirror. And…
After months of bitten fingernails and a wandering eye, I’m happy to report that I LOVE it!
I was giggling like a schoolgirl when it was time to get down to the real work—pinning.
The seamstress pinned me from all different directions, but was extraordinarily great about not pricking me. I was feeling relaxed and chatting with my mother until I felt a giant pin slide into my shoulder. OUCH! As it turns out, I’m only the second girl that the seamstress has ever pricked. Lucky me. Then she tells me that the other girl got it in her derriere. Well, on second thought, maybe I AM lucky!
My bustle. Two seconds before this picture was taken, I reached back to adjust the bow, and proceeded to gouge my finger on a pin. Fittings are dangerous little devils! *Side note: I forgot to bring along the ivory velvet ribbon that I’m planning to use as my sash—boo! So that sash with be slightly different.*
Now it’s time for the tears portion of this little story.
I had brought along the beautiful shoes I planned to wear on the wedding day to see how they look with my dress. Well, bad news, people. They’re too short, not right, and just generally blah. They’re a very light pink, and against the stark white of my dress they look… dirty. And nobody wants dirty shoes, especially on their wedding day.
Exit happiness. Enter panic. And exhaustion. After months of making decisions, I’m tired of picking things out. Instead of jumping into a shoe search with the obsession that possessed me months ago, I now just want to lie down and take a nap.
It’s a good think Mama Powder Puff was with me, because she totally saved the day. Look at these little beauties she found for me at one of my favorite places, DSW:
They’re satin, and I think the simplicity will mesh a lot better with the lace of my dress. Plus, they have an awesome bow, and they’re super comfortable to boot. Thanks, Mom!
So this story has a happy ending—I love my dress, the shoes are great, and all is right with the world. Now I just have to wait until June for my final fitting, and then I’ll be able to take my lovely dress home! We’re in the final stretch, people!
Did you encounter any unexpected snags after your first fitting?
