The Last (Single) Supper

April 16th, 2009 @ 3:32 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

True, we’re a couple of Philly fanatics. But with our rehearsal at the Villanova church, I thought a dinner location along the Main Line would make the most sense.

So, we made a list, and started visiting some tasty spots close to the University: 333 Belrose in Radnor, Blush in Bryn Mawr, Plate in Ardmore and Tango in Bryn Mawr.

But, a frustrating pattern emerged — “minimums” set high above the per-plate cost for a Friday night private party (meaning we’d have to add on a significant number of extras, driving up the overall price of the event). $2,500 for a 30-person event just isn’t in our budget (and would actually translate to higher food costs than the estimate from our wedding caterer!).

Venturing into the city seemed like the only way to find an affordable spot, so we looked at several Old City restaurants, located walking distance from the hotel where we’ll be staying (separately) the night before the wedding: Triumph Brewing Company, Spasso Italian Grill, and the spot we ultimately selected, Positano Coast. (All pictures courtesy of Positano Coast.)

Positano Coast is one of the restaurants in the locally-known Aldo Lamberti “family”, so we thought it would likely be perfect, and were excited to sample the menu. Along with Mama, Daddy and FMIL Bruschetta, Mr. Bruschetta and I visited Positano Coast for dinner a few weeks ago. We were impressed by their creative take on traditional Italian fare, and pleased to hear we would have our own space within the restaurant — two gauzy curtains will separate our group (to be seated at one loooong table) from other restaurant patrons.

3
Although I certainly didn’t plan this — all our Main Line choices serve up contemporary American cuisine! — I love that the rehearsal dinner will be a nod to my Italian heritage. And, the cerulean and white decor, and wall-sized photographs of the Amalfi Coast create an atmosphere that’s trendy (but not overly so) and relaxing.

Mr. Bruschetta handled the contract for the rehearsal dinner, and I couldn’t be happier with what he arranged. Dinner will begin at 7:30 with a first course of cheese and antipasto, served family style. Each subsequent course — salad, entree and dessert — will be individual portions. We selected chicken saltimbocca, braised short ribs (pictured below — the other shots aren’t our food offerings, but don’t they still look so yummy?!) and eggplant Napoleon as our entree options, and guests will be able to make their dinner choice at the table. We’ll finish on a sweet note with mini cannoli and tartufo.

I love that at the end of the evening, Mr. Bruschetta and I will be just a short walk from the hotel — because getting a good night’s sleep will be topping my list of priorities!

Is your rehearsal dinner location close to your ceremony location? Or did you opt (like us) for a spot a bit farther away (and what influenced your decision)?

Yum! I am marrying into an Italian family…and my FMIL thinks it’s hilarious that we are having the rehearsal dinner at an Italian restaurant. We’ve never been there before, so hopefully it is good - Miss Perfume is right in that for some reason, the whole D.C. area lacks a really good Italian place.

That food looks so yummy and the decor of the restaurant is beautiful! :)
What a fun place!

My fiancee and I are getting married at a Plantation a good 20 minutes from Charleston, SC.
Trolley’s will be transporting guests to the ceremony/reception site, so we chose a Rehearsal dinner spot right in the city so guests get to experience the best of both worlds, plus it’s walking distance from the hotel rooms we blocked.

What a great arrangement, and how great Mr B arranged it! Ours will be a bit far from where we’ll stay but a great choice overall: we’ll get to do a local bourbon tasting!

The food there is awesome and service is excellent. Great choice! We are having ours at Maggiano’s near the convention center. We didn’t want to choose a chain with so many great restaurants in Philly. However, it was one of the first places we went out on a date to and we love the food. Plus their minimums were reasonable and we are getting family style 2 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 pasta dishes, 2 main courses, and 2 desserts - a great deal for our money. And who doesn’t like “traditional” Italian

we’re serving italian food at a great restaurant about 4 miles from the hotels where most of our guests are staying about 10 miles from the church. I thought I was staying pretty close, but a short walk it is nto!

another philly bride here!
I never knew about that restaurant - looks fantastic…I definitely want to try it now! Thanks for the heads up about 333 Belrose…The in-laws are thinking of having it there. I was actually at dinner there 2 weeks ago and noticed how expensive it was, so I’ve been concerned (yet thankful for their generosity.) Thanks for letting me know about the great restaurant that I’m missing out on in old city!

Your rehearsal dinner location looks incredible and so does that food! YUM-MERS!
We also had the problem of finding a rehearsal dinner location that wasn’t more expensive then our wedding caterer.
We ended up choosing a location 20-30 mins away from our wedding location, but it is so different then our wedding it’s totally worth it :)

Awesome!! Congrats on finding a spot, I’m on the hunt right now for ours. Positano Coast is one of our favorite restaurants, the seating is just so awesome. I’m sure your guests will be impressed!!! I completely disregarded them as a rehearsal spot because I thought the price would be too high. I will have to give them a call!! We are having our wedding/rehearsal at the Constitution Center so I wanted to stay in the city for the dinner. Just a questions with parking though, how will you coordinate this with your guests??

Positano is my favorite place in the world!! Our reception room is the Almalfi Coast Room, which I feel is very fitting!

The food looks really good. The restaurant where we want is not close to our reception or hotel. We still haven’t made a choice. I need to get on it.

Our rehearsal luncheon is about 60 miles from our ceremony site!! But we figure everyone will have plenty of time to travel since it’s lunch not dinner, and everyone will end up back there anyway for the afterparty after the wedding!
