DIY Tutorial - Revamped Candles

April 17th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Beagle

Once we found our venue, I knew right away that I wanted to decorate the outside walkway to invite people to take a break from the inside party to mingle outside.

I decided it would look lovely to either place candles along the walkway railing, or use them to decorate the cocktail tables we are going to place outside. I wanted to do something that was simple and not time consuming.

Enter exhibit ’A’:

This project is fairly inexpensive. It’s easy and takes only a few minutes!

Supplies:

Religious candles—large and small sizes, preferably white (hmm… they look kind of nice in plain white also):

I found these at my local grocery store. They are approximately $1.50 each. I tried to find an online source for them also, but I wasn’t very successful. I only found them at Kmart online (they are also $1.50, but are only worth it if you can get free shipping).

8 1/2″ X 11″ paper, ribbon, fabric, or anything else you think of to brighten up the candles. :)

I tried to look for paper that was either clear vellum with a design, or a light shade with a texture.
Make sure you remove all price stickers before you get started. :)

Lay the candle lengthwise on the paper. Mark the paper so that you can trim it to fit the candle.

After you have trimmed the paper, apply adhesive on the length of the paper. I used adhesive tape.

Place the candle on the paper and press down. Slowly roll the candle forward while continuing to hold the paper against candle.

Apply adhesive to both the widths and opposite length of the paper while continuing to hold the paper against candle. Roll the candle forward until you have reached the end of the paper.

Turn the candle right-side up and press the paper onto candle until it sticks (about a minute).

Decorate the candle as best suits you.

Cute! Those came out fabulous! I plan on doing several, but the wedding keeps getting closer and the projects haven’t been completed yet, so we will see how many actually get accomplished.

Neat. If you scroll really fast through your pics, it’s like one of those stop motion films (or whatever you call them).
Great candles.

Love these! I was looking for something to put along the walkways/bridges that my guests will have to take to get from the ceremony to the reception, you know, to mark the path, and these are a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Ahh, ribbons and candles - gotta love them together! Since I’ve started my diy projects I noticed that I’ve used A TON of ribbon. Didn’t know before I am obsessed with them.

I have a lot of diy projects. halfway there in getting them done thankfully. But sometimes it seems like one diy project leads to another then another that I didn’t even plan! It’s seems never ending! Ever had this happen with your projects, Ms. B?

Love it! What a great way to use these inexpensive but practically unbreakable candles! They have them in our local grocery for 99 cents. If anyone’s looking for them, look in your “Ethnic food” or “Mexican Food” aisle - that’s where I found ours.

very pretty! Who would have thunk??? We did a cool ring “box” DIY project, I’m going to DIY my bouquet and his buttonier, using the beautiful roses from our garden and semi-DIY our wedding announcements-bought some wonderful ones on discount, just have to print and send!
Our decorations for our celebration party will be DYI, little knick-knacks we will pickup along the way on our honeymoon.
We are going to elope, shhh!! Don’t tell! ;-)

These are adorable. I wanted to recommend tracing paper as an alternative to vellum if you’re going with plain paper- it’s super uber cheap, and looks and feels much the same!

I was just thinking about doing something similar to this the other day! Have you done any with the vellum with a design (particularly the damask sheet that was in one of the pictures)? That was pretty much my exact thought except I didn’t think of using religious candles - Great idea!
