My Ring!

April 17th, 2009 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Labrador

For those of you wondering what my ring looks like, here it is!

It’s a 1.5 t.w. carat round cut center diamond surrounded by a halo and micro-pave band set in 14k white gold (we’re going to re-plate it in platinum on our 5 year anniversary) and it has a matching wedding band. I actually got to pick out my own ring! This was after a couple months of researching rings that fit Mr. Lab’s high standards and my very picky taste. :)

Mr. Lab had to have a temporary sizer put on it because he didn’t have time to properly size it before the proposal.

We’re getting my current ring appraised and insured, and then sent off for verification, since it didn’t come with a grading report (we purchased from Zales because this was the only setting I’d found that I liked after months of research). Depending on what the report states, Mr. Lab wants to upgrade the diamond and pass down the current one to our daughter one day. I really don’t care if we upgrade this one or not, because I’m in love with it as-is!

If we do it that way, Mr. Lab will get the diamond that matches his standards, and I get the setting I love! We love that my ring has room to grow as we pass milestone anniversaries!

So, to make a long story short, we don’t know all the Cs quite yet. But I DO know that it doesn’t have any visible imperfections.

How many details do you know about your diamond? Does it remain a mystery to you, or are you aware of all of the Cs?

Beautiful!! Yes, I know all the details of my e-ring (unfortunately–depending on how you look at it)! I had to go on the hunt through NY’s diamond district for it with Mr. P who, like Mr. Lab, is super into the quality details of the stone!! So it was exhausting. :( Be glad your process was clean and neat and to both your liking!!! I think it is so beautiful just the way it is!!!

Your ring is gorgeous!
I don’t know all the C for my ring, but I know FH spent a while (or what seemed like an eternity to me) looking for a diamond that met his standards. I do know there are not visual inclusions and I always get compliments on how beautiful the stone is, my mom always talks about how flawless it looks :)

We got the report with my ring. FI was pretty exacting about picking out a gorgeous stone just like Mr. Lab. While the ring isn’t perfect there are no visible imperfections and I kind of like that there are invisible (to the eye) little unique factors about my diamond. It makes it mine and no one else’s. :o)

Also, Ms. Lab, love the background of bridal mags for your pictures!

I know all the C’s about my ring because I was the one that had to insure it! I’m the “business manager” in our relationship. As far as picking, he did all the heavy lifting but we had a fun afternoon of ring shopping beforehand so he could get an idea of what I like. My ring is actually VERY SIMILAR to Miss L’s and I just LOVE IT - as every girl should.

Your ring is gorgeous. I got a report with mine because it was made. My FI picked out the diamond and setting separate. Mine is also a round cut stone with halo surrounding.

Very pretty ring!
The FI picked out each piece seperately with a jeweler that is also a family friend. I’ve got the GIA Certificate safely tucked away with our appraisal. =D
Honestly, unlike many brides I absolutely wanted no part of the e-ring selection. I wanted it all to be a surprise!

Pretty ring. My FI picked out my ring and I love it. I know all of the C’s (I have the appraisal), and he couldn’t have done a better job!

Sweet Jesus!

A friend of mine told me to have my ring insured, but my fiance assured me that’s not necessary… his mom gave it to him to give to me, and it was purchased on an ad man’s salary back in the early ’70s. It is a real diamond, but it’s very very wee. As it turns out though, it’s perfect! That’s about all I know. I love that it was his mom’s, because she is an awesome lady.

Very beautiful! I definitly seems to suit you!

I do have a question though - if you didn’t know the 4Cs about your diamond, how did you know whether the price you paid was appropriate for the diamond? I would have a hard time shelling out a lot of cash not knowing whether I was actually paying for a quality or a cheap diamond!

Wow. That’s quite a ring. Congratulations.

I know the “C’s” of my ring, rather, I knew them at one point but I forgot. It’s a really nice diamond, it’s beautiful, and it’s from my sweetie–that’s all I need to remember. :)

As for the insurance value–I don’t want to know! That’s none of my business. :) I can probably estimate, since I was doing a little pricing beforehand since I gave my fiancee some keywords (such as “emerald cut”, and “nothing too big!!”), but I don’t need to know how much he spent. The ring was a gift from the love of my life–that’s the important part.

Best wishes. :)

I’m a science geek and he’s a tech geek. The only reason we were interested in diamonds at all is that we love the science of the whole thing.

Then we went and got a colored stone… and there are a whole different set of C’s that you have to get to know.

We did our homework and made sure our diamond came with a cert. We wanted to make sure we were buying what we thought we were buying!

It’s so pretty- I love the diamonds on the side! I had originally looked at that style (something similar) before I found my ring. I picked out the ring w/ Mr. Beagle.. so I found all the details then.

Oooh, lovin’ the bling!! My ring has got a lot of bling, too. Mr. G picked it out, and did a ridiculous amount of research before he bought the stone and picked out the setting. He’s told me the details before, but I’m still fuzzy on them. :)

Very pretty ring…I knew exactly what we were getting because I did the research to find my perfect ring!! I didn’t want Mr. Static to go into a chain jewelry store and come out with something that everyone else in the world could get. We created my ring together, and scoured for months to find the perfect diamond. We had the ring made at a local jeweler and the wedding band to match it. I went with a smaller (still 3/4 c certified ) radiant diamond that is D in color and a VVS2 and absolutely beautiful. And since we did so much research and planning, we KNOW we got more than we paid for…my ring appraised for more than 1,000 dollars more than we paid for it!

Your ring is absolutely gorgeous! I take care of all of our important documents, so I have the info. on my ring. My future in laws actually gave him the center stone, so one day I hope to pass it down to our son when he proposes to make it a tradition, although, I am totally in love with my ring and I dont know if I’ll be able to part with it!

@Hayley: You got yours from Zales and have the grading report? Lucky you! They told us that they didn’t give them out for all the rings. :(

@Miss Perfume: It wasn’t as easy as it seemed. We actually started the search back in April of ‘08. He didn’t buy a ring until 2 days before he proposed! It was a LONG, drawn-out, frustrating experience. haha He just had way higher standards than I did!

@Miss Mary Jane: Mr. Lab STILL hasn’t insured mine. I’m so paranoid about it getting caught in my hair and ripping the center diamond out or something horrendous like that….

@DC Anna: My MOH said the same thing about having imperfections that you can identify and make it your own. She said she’s glad to have this one spot that she checks every time it comes back from getting cleaned so she knows no one messed with it!

@Gerbera: I wish I could be one of those girls who just hands over full responsibility to the FI. But I just had to have my say in the ring that I would be sporting the rest of my life and because Mr. Lab is the type of guy who needed the help (seriously), it ended up going from me suggesting styles to me just picking it out! lol

@kvp: That’s so sweet! Mr. Lab’s mom gave his sister her engagement ring’s center diamond to wear as a necklace during her wedding. I’m now going to either wear it or carry it on my bouquet! They’re starting a new tradition of passing it down to female members of the family.

@MsB: Mr. Lab had the same reservations which is the reason it took nearly 8 months to finally buy a ring! We honestly could not find a setting we both were in love with so I was at peace with buying this ring that had no visible imperfections (which is the most important thing about a diamond to me because no one is going to ask to see my ring under a microscope). Mr. Lab still felt uneasy about it which is why he’s planning on upgrading later and still getting the GIA certification on this ring.

@Doctorgirl: That’s really cool! If I were to get a colored diamond, I’d go with a pink-tinted one! What color did you get?

@sally: Not for all their rings which concerned us a bit. But it was on sale for so low and the perfect setting so we didn’t want to let it pass us by.

@bij: Yup!

@Melody: Those are really pretty! Very much my taste!

@princetonbride: We were originally going to get this setting from Blue Nile: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_7814?filter_id=1&collection_id=236. But it wasn’t exactly what we wanted (no side stones). But Mr. Lab is still lusting over their loose diamonds as an upgrade one day, but like I said, I could care less! I love my ring, grading report or not!

@Miss Staticgirl_77: I really was against the idea of a ring from a chain store at first. We only went there because I wanted to try on a round cut diamond (I had always thought I liked princess cut the most) and accidentally fell in love with this one! It was perfect (except for the lack of grading report). To this day I haven’t met anyone who has a ring like mine, so I’m glad we went with it!

@Mrs. Espresso: Haha, my hands are pretty? Thanks for the um, compliment? lol

@Newport Nuptials: I keep thinking about giving up my current stone and I almost cringe. I’m not all the way on board with upgrading the stone, but as long as it stays in our family I will be able to sleep at night!

My centerstone is a white sapphire. I picked out the ring and the stone, and we have all the gouge on it, but I’m considering having it replaced with a smaller stone. This one is so large you can actually see fingerprints on it! *sigh*

Hey Miss Lab! I was wondering, did you ever get the grading report on your ring? I love it and my BF is thinking about buying it, but we’d like to know more information about the Cs before we make a decision. Can you pm me if you don’t mind? :) Thanks!
