Mrs. Meatball's Picture
Mrs. Meatball, Hollywood Age and Occupation: 30, Actor/Writer/Office Maven Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Actor/Writer Engagement Date: October 7, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: September 16, 2008 Venue: Private Garden/The Bungalow Club About Me: I love melty cheese and diet coke almost as much as I love my man. I'm from Chicago, he's from NYC, and we both miss public transit and great pizza. We have an adorable muppet dog called Paco. I'm part hippie with a healthy dash of hip hop superstar, have excessive empathy for animals, and have not one, but two bionic eyes (long story). We're broke and it ain't no joke. It can't stop us from planning the bold and whimsical wedding of our dreams, but we've had to get pretty creative to make it work, yo!
About Mrs. Meatball

Early on, we knew that finding a fly DJ for our wedding was one of the most important elements for us. Whenever we picture “the perfect party” (which is, after all, what a wedding should feel like to the couple of honor), we see a packed dance floor, sweaty faces, hands and feet flailing, singing along. So, one would think that it would be the first vendor we’d have booked, but nay, with less than 6 weeks to go, we still didn’t have our Spinner locked.

There were a few hindrances along the road: we have very eclectic taste and wanted a DJ who wouldn’t play “typical wedding music” all night. We also love mash-ups and were hoping to find a DJ who could blend old and new tunes to create unbearably danceable beats that would please all generations. Lastly, we wanted a DJ who could actually spin, mix and scratch (with real vinyl)—rather than just play a “playlist” of full-length songs all night.

We’d gotten a few recommendations, and had set up a few interviews, but we were starting to feel like finding “the one” was just a pipe dream. Then, late one night I was Googling around and was hit with the funkiest freshness I’ve heard in a while. I had found The Flashdance, and I was mesmerized!

The Flashdance is a supa-pimp co-op site hosted by Michael Antonia (aka the Human Jukebox), the rad kids at Our Labor of Love Photography and the photogenius that is Max Wanger. It’s chock full of mind-blowing inspiration in the form of wed-pro interviews, playlists, photos and more.

The kicker? Michael lives in my neighborhood, and is one of the rare (but smart) DJs who actually puts unedited samples of his work online, so you get to know his style right off the bat! His beats are so hot, I got a fever just watching! He also puts up playlists and has a email list for free mixes every month. If I weren’t already engaged, I might be in love. :)

We met with him last week over some guava cheese pie, and we were blown away by his knowledge, background, and style. He meets all our criteria, and them some! He gave us a couple mix tapes, which we promptly put on repeat and forced all our friends to groove to. My current favorite? A mash-up of “Colors” by Ice-T and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. Dope level: Orange, yo!

I hope-pray-hope he is available for our wedding date, because I really believe he was sent from DJ heaven to be our dance floor pimp. I’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime, I recommend heading over to The Flashdance for some mind-blowing beats and amazing photography inspiration.

P.S. - How much do you love this photo?

Yeah, it’s from The Flashdance, too.

Are you on the hunt for a more-than-wedding DJ? What’s your music style?

Wow, I am in awe. I saw something about The Flashdance last week, but I never actually listened to them. Now I have, and I wish I could book them too! Hope it works out for you!

Yay! He is our DJ! (oops still have to blog about it) He is awesome! Super talented and so nice too. We’ve only talked on the phone, so I have yet to meet him in person. This post just got me all excited again.

Mr. Taffy will be jealous of the vinyl! We are doing an ipod since he doesn’t want to bring all his records to our venue (most of them he has recorded into mp3’s for this reason), but he wants his friend to dj. Congrats on finding the perfect spinner! :)

@EAQ219: Haha - you’re adorable!

@ Miss Ducking: What a small world! How exciting :)

@Darlene: you should contact him directly, as it depends on a number of variables (ie: date, length of set, equipment needed) but he’s really fair and reasonable!

Thats great Miss Meatball! We are having trouble finding a DJ we really love. I’ve already seen three. We found an awesome DJ who plays in a few of our favorite clubs durign the week in the summer, but he is a wedding DJ on the weekends and has been for years. So he knows how to mix wedding and new clubbier music, which is awesome since we have a young crowd. He doesnt just play music, he spins as well! Me and fi have totally different tastes in music. He showed us three of his most recent playlists and they vary so much. So we know he knows how to work a playlist to your taste. The only problem is, he won’t play the cha cha slide. I know its cheesy, but my friends and I love it. I still dont know what to do.

I’m glad you found your dream DJ, we hope to have better luck soon.
