Where to Honeymoon?

April 17th, 2009 @ 1:28 pm by Mrs. Quiche

Mr. Quiche and I love to travel. We’ve had many awesome adventures together - be it Italy or NYC - so it’s only fitting that our honeymoon should follow suit. With the wedding in Jamaica, we are essentially going to be honeymooning, times 2. Yeah!

There were 3 major contenders vying for the spot of the Quiche Honeymoon, all very different, yet fabulous in their own way.

First up: Indonesia

Specifically, Bali. Ah yes, the magnificent isle of Bali. A place that Mr. Quiche and I have wanted to go to, yet haven’t been able to justify the expense (or time off) that it would require. What better way to see this beautiful part of the world than on your honeymoon? The Amankila Resort in Bali is breathtaking. We’ve had friends who’ve vacationed here and say it is the best hotel, hands down.

We love to bike, so beach time paired with a few days bicycling through the smaller villages would be a perfect vacation for us! Being able to really experience the culture first-hand, rather than through a windshield, is incredible.

To me, Bali is perfection.

Option 2: Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara (okay, and along the West Coast in general!) is one of my favorite cities in the USA. Growing up in the Midwest and visiting family friends in LA turned me into a “California Girl” in Junior High and High School. I wanted nothing more than to go to college out West. Well, Ohio State must have been my destiny, as I never ended up making it out to Cali to live. My mom STILL says that she is shocked I never ended up moving there after college, as I bugged her CONSTANTLY about moving there all through high school. Sigh.

Wait, where was I? Oh yeah, a Santa Barbara “mini-moon”! Even though our wedding is in Jamaica, we wanted to have a different getaway after the wedding. We could fly from Montego Bay to LA on Sunday, then rent a car and drive to Santa Barbara. In order to treat ourselves to a little luxury, while still maintaining a budget, the Four Seasons is offering a “Buy 2 nights, get the 3rd night FREE” deal. Score! Since we are taking off a lot of time for the wedding, we could just take a quick jaunt out West for a quaint little “mini-moon”.

Option 3: The Emerald Isle

Ireland made its way onto our potential list later in the honeymoon planning game. An email alert led us to check out some unbelievably cheap airfares. I’ve never been to Ireland, and neither has Mr. Quiche. My mom and stepdad went there a couple of years ago and loved it!

Where to Honeymoon? : wedding honeymoon Ireland

Their trip consisted of flying into Dublin, staying for a few days there, then renting a car to tour the Irish countryside. The idea of (like Bali) seeing and experiencing the countryside with the locals is very appealing to me! I want nothing more than to saunter up to the bar at a little pub, order a pint of Guinness and a basket of chips, and listen to the band perform. Driving the west coast of Ireland is breathtaking—rolling green hills, cliffs, and the sea. Not to mention, the history!

Honestly, all of these are equally appealing to me. So, which did we choose? You’ll have to wait and see (okay, I won’t make you wait THAT long… it will be my next post!)!

Did you have trouble narrowing down your honeymoon location?

Oh! Oh! Emerald isle! Airfare is RIDICULOUSLY Cheap to Dublin. We’re doing 2wk backpacking Europe trip and plan to fly into Dublin first as our first stop because it’s the cheapest to fly into. Depending on when you’re going I’ve seen RT for under $300! No joke.

My guess is that you chose The Emerald Isle. :)
You’re right though, all fabulous options!

OK. @ Gerbera: flying from where to dublin is that cheap!?! Bali looks seriously amazing!! but I’ve actually always wanted to go to Ireland and Europe. We did Tahiti, which was just as amazing (especially because Europe in January is no beach and sand)!

But I’m interested in the cheap airfare to Ireland! :)

Wow! What varied choices!!! It’s going to be hard to decide, huh? Mr. P worked in Jakarta for a little while and really likes it. Of course, Jakarta is nothing like Bali, but apparently the people are very nice! Exotic, beauuuutiful, and relaxing!!! Come to think of it, since your wedding is going to be tropical and beachy, do you want to contrast it with Ireland? Any one of these would be amazing!!!!!

Santa Barbara is wonderful. I am getting married there next summer. The weather should be nice and warm in May and although not as luxurious as Bali or Ireland it is definetely more budget friendly and an incredible place to visit.

@nada122:
Right now Aer Lingus has airfare specials for JFK to Dublin for 195 One Way which is under $400 RT. But I swear I’ve seen it for under $300 at one point and I’ve only been keeping an eye on it since March. It’s all in the when (meaning dates are very limited so you have to be very open with your travel dates)! =D
But there are also sites like Travezoo that notify you about amazing travel packages!

yes! We cannot decide. And now with FIs job future in limbo we may hold off on our exotic dreams for now and head somewhere closer to home like the Caribbean. All your choices sound great! I lived in Ireland for a year and it is truly a beautiful country with awesome people–it would be a great choice!

Wow they all look amazing, but so different! Can’t wait to see what you choose. Santa Barbara is beautiful, I went there a lot growing up. Ireland is absolutely amazing and was one of the favorite places I went when I was in Europe. And I’d love to go to Bali one day!

Bali is amazing. I highly recommend it! It’s expensive to get there but once you get there, everything is ridiculously cheap. We hired a private driver for only $35/day, including gas, parking fees, everything!

I was in Ireland almost 5 years ago. We flew into Cork and did the Blarney stone thing. Ireland is truly amazing! (So much so that I’m looking at flights after reading your post!) While we were planning our trip, I met a lady who lived in Ireland. She suggested to stay at Bed & Breakfast’s and it is the best way to go! We met some fabulous owners! The pubs are fantastic with lots of live music! If you go, I will be very jealous!!!

While we’re still not sure we’re even going on a honeymoon, Bali would be my number one choice. Between the culture, beaches and things to see I would to go there. I’ve never been to Asia either.

FI and I went to Ireland and had a nice time. I was surprised that it was not very warm even in early July!

Bali would be my #1 because how many other times would you be able to go there? The thing is that you are already having your wedding at a beach resort and it won’t be that different from your wedding.

Santa Barbara… you can go there any time really.

I-R-E-L-A-N-D = YES!!!!!!!!!!!! We flew into Dublin and stayed there for a two nights then rented a car and drove cross country to Galway, visit the Aran Islands, did the Dingle and finished in County Cork. If I could do it again, I would skip Cork and do the Ring of Kerry.

I made a photo book of the vacation and posted it in Shutterfly. I think I commented on this in someone’s post months ago but here it is again.

Good luck.

You’re right your choices are very different, but I can see why you’d want to visit each!
FH and I considered going to Scotland or driving up the coast of CA and stopping in Santa Barbara etc, but we’ve ended up planning our Honeymoon for French Canada :)
I can’t wait to see what you picked!

My vote would have been Bali, but it would be super hard for me to decide between those 3. We had some choices too - we wanted to go to Costa Rica to go fishing, but a family member offered their time share in Key West for FREE. In my book (which happens to be the checkbook at this point) free beats costa rica ANY day… Can’t wait to see what you chose!
