Men Can Have Showers, Too!

April 18th, 2009 @ 11:40 am by Mrs. Joey

Our friend Paul just got married a few weekends ago. To celebrate his upcoming nuptials, his fellow teachers threw him a Man Shower. Yup. A shower for guys. There weren’t any gifts off the registry or cute little favors, but there were adults in overalls. Paul an avid gardener and lovingly refers to his 3’x8’ garden as his “farm”, so his co-workers threw him a farm party. They dressed up in overalls and straw hats, and bought him “farm” stuff like seeds, rakes, and shovels.

When Mr. Joey hears the words bridal shower, he cringes. Something about it makes him want to run for the hills. I’m 99.99% certain we won’t be having a co-ed shower. I think that’s fine. But the question is, will Mr. Joey get a Man Shower? He’d say he doesn’t want one (too embarrassing) but I think it would be funny. He works with this awesome teacher Jen who loves to make Mr. Joey feel uncomfortable in a comfortable way. Whenever he looks a little frustrated, she always asks Mr. Joey to hug it out. He hates hugging people (besides me and relatives). She always asks the sweatiest teenager in school to stand next to him during school masses so they will inevitably have to hold hands (he hates holding hands - germs).

So, of course when I thought about Mr. Joey and the Man Shower, I immediately thought of Jen. It sounds like she might be putting something together. In the end, if it isn’t a girlie shower, he’d love it.

How do you think your groom would feel about a man shower? Anyone’s husband or FI have one?

A man-shower sounds funny! Esp. when there are adults in overalls. It also sounds very thoughtful. I asked my fiance if he would come at the end of the shower and he said no probably not…but i think he will come…I think he just wants to throw me off! I guess that means I would have to leave the car at home so he can show up to surprise me!! See if I want something from him…I just ask him because men are not mind readers!

I cringe at the thought of a shower in general, and I’m a lady! I understand and appreciate the sentiments behind it, but it’s often executed in such a gendered way. I think of doilies and tea and toilet paper wedding dresses, and I’ll bet Joey does, too!

If you do throw him a “man shower,” I suggest not calling it a shower at all. A party in support and excitement about an impending marriage sounds awesome, and the groom should be able to enjoy the benefits of one, too.

(For the record, I feel this way about bachelor/-ette parties, too! The more personalized they are, the more they buck the strippers-and-booze stereotype, the more supportive I am of a “last hurrah” with friends.)

We threw a “Man Shower” for a male co-worker of mine about a year ago. We all chipped in and bought him a grill, so I think the fete was sufficiently manly. :)

We did a man shower for a co-worker. I put plastic dinosaurs and beer can candles all over it. I think it’s so fun to have the groom honored in a fun way and to give him some man gifts!

I’ve never even heard of man-shower! I’m pretty sure my fi won’t be getting one, although it sounds funny!

That is so fabulous. I love your husbands friend. She sounds so great.

And yes, we’re having a man shower, but it will be a little co-ed because it’ll be a Handyman-Handywoman theme where he’ll get tools and things of that nature and I’ll get cooking stuff (and hopefully a vacuum!)

I think it’s such a great idea, because until you’re married (or have your own house) you never really know what tools you’ll need. So it’s helpful to have the experience of other guys to help you to know what to get.

It’s customary in my family to throw a “tool shower” for the groom and FI is having his in a couple of weeks. It gives the men in the family an opportunity to buy something for the new couple that isn’t a new blender or set of towels, and in my family, with a lot of “handy men,” being able to offer a tool as a gift is a lot of fun. The shower is always held in someone’s garage and involves the kind of food you’d have at a Super Bowl party, plus a lot of beer.

I always worry about the combination of beer and power tools, but so far the showers have all gone off without a problem. FI just registered for an orbital sander he’s really hoping to get… :)

Ugh. West Coast Groom’s boys are barely able to manage planning a day’s worth of stag festivities, let alone a Man Shower on top of it. I think he’s just happy to be benefiting from the awesome kitchen gadgets I got.

I don’t plan on having a bridal shower. We are planning on have a Jack & Jill open house. A bit more laid back, no games and for all of our friends and family. We think it is important for the both of us to celebrate our pending nuptials with friends and family and not feel pressured to play silly games or single me out.
