About Miss Labrador

We Have Our Officiant!

April 18th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Miss Labrador

I’m extremely thrilled to announce that my hometown pastor will marry us! I’ve attended Messiah Lutheran Church in Valdosta, GA since 1999. My pastor, Rev. Richard Pieplow and his wife will travel to Savannah to officiate our wedding ceremony.

I was fortunate enough to get to choose my religious denomination when I was younger. My family never really attended church when I was a child, so I would tag along with friends here and there to different church services (everything from Southern Baptist to Pentecostal). I never quite felt like I “fit in” even though I enjoyed the messages of the services. It was the style in which those messages were delivered that made me know they just weren’t right for me.

After my father died in 1998, my mom decided it was time to turn to God to help answer some of our questions and problems. Her best friend was already attending a church, so it was only natural that she picked the same one. That church, Messiah Lutheran, ended up being my pick as well. It was also the church that handled my dad’s funeral and I remember how much Pastor Pieplow’s words helped my mom during that time.

My mom wanted us to go with her the first few times when we began attending. But she made it clear that it was our decision whether we wanted to continue to go after that.

Ultimately, my brother, sister, and I decided this was the right place for us. Every Sunday, we made the 40-minute drive to Valdosta to attend Sunday/youth group school, Confirmation classes, and the regular service. We all became very involved in different ways from performing acolyting duties, to helping in the nursery, and setting up the altar. We’ve performed in Christmas “pageants”, read Bible readings during the service, and volunteered as ushers. Anytime there was something to help out with, our family was there. We even all got baptized on the same day at that church! I’ll never forget officially being welcomed into our new church family.

Over the years, I’ve moved away to attend college and haven’t had the chance to make it back to my hometown church as much as I’d like. I now really only attend on Easter and Christmas Eve and a couple random Sundays when I know I can get a late start on the road back to Athens after a weekend visit. It’s always refreshing to go back and catch up with everyone from the congregation (everyone knows everyone!) and hear one of Pastor’s classic sermons that always starts with a funny story. Although I found another church in Athens, it’s never compared to “my” church.

I’m really looking forward to having such a special person be such an integral part of the beginning of our marriage. Pastor Pieplow has been there for my family in our toughest times, and he’ll be there in some of our happiest times! :)

Is someone close to you officiating your ceremony? Who is it and what do they mean to you?

That will be so special to have your hometown minister officiating the ceremony! Since we got married abroad, we couldn’t do that, but our minister wasn’t totally random. A coworker of mine got married in the Cayman Islands and raved about him, so at least we had that little connection!

I think it’s wonderful that your parents allowed you and your siblings to find your own way to God or whom ever may be your higher power. My parents didnt go to church and never had us baptized…but over the yrs I found some friends at high school that went to church and I would attend the youth group and holiday services and helped out with the kids group. It was a great family away from home esp when my parents divorced. But I never got baptized myself…and neither did my sisters. Im sorry to hear that your dad has passed away. I think its great that your having your ceremony at your childhood church where everyone knows you. We on the other hand will be looking into Journeys of the Heart…its an group of officiants in our area…because we arent in the church any longer.

I got married just after finishing seminary, so our officiants were two of my supervisors/mentors (who were also my husband’s pastors) and a very good friend/ classmate. It was a lot of clergy, but it was so meaningful to us to have our pastors–who are also friends and mentors–officiate.

That’s wonderful! I’m not sure who will officiate our wedding yet as I was raised Lutheran and he was raised Pentecostal/Assemblies of God. I had always thought I wanted the pastor from the Lutheran church I grew up in to do it, but there was some family drama so we no longer attend there and he also retired last year. I think we may end up using our friend’s dad who is a pastor and has been able to watch our relationship grow.

I loved your note about the importance of your faith, and how you were lead to the church that is right for your family! My family is a mix of Christian faiths with both Lutheran and Southern Baptist ministers represented in our family tree as well as Brethern, Presbyterians, Catholics, and Methodists… We are a diverse group that mainly agrees on the main thing… the Holy Trinity…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…
What a blessing it is to find a church to worship in that meets your needs! May God Bless your marriage!

Thanks for sharing; I think this shows how truly important the officiant and your faith is to you. I didn’t have a specific person I wanted to perform the ceremony, but I always imagined getting married in the little chapel in my hometown church. Much to my dismay, they tore it down to make more school buildings! At least my officiant, who I just met last week, is very friendly and interested in us as a couple and will do a good job.

@D.Marie & @Miss Mary Jane: I’m actually not getting married at my hometown church, just by my hometown pastor. I can’t wait to have him marry us! Mr. Lab never really attended church growing up but he loved my pastor. He really laid back and always has great jokes and stories that tie into his sermons. I think that’s why I like him so much!

@miss bliss: That’s quite a mix you’ve got going on in your family! Glad that you all are about to agree on the importance of faith instead of getting caught up in denominations.

@LatteLove: My original college pastor was someone I definitely could have seen marrying us. That’s awesome that your college pastor is marrying you and that your FI has a relationship with him as well!

Great post, Miss L! Glad that he’ll be able to marry you and be present on such a happy occasion.

My current pastor will be marrying us…he’s someone that I’ve known and trusted for a long time so I’m very excited to have him there! Actually, his whole family will be involved in the wedding…his wife is one of my BM’s and his two little boys are my Ring Boys!

We are being married by a member of our church who became the interim preacher after the old pastor had to leave. We have become good friends with him and were delighted to learn that though he was just a temporary preacher, he is ordained. I never really met the guy he replaced so if that guy hadn’t left, we would have probably just hired some random officiant.
