Prep-PORE-ations

April 19th, 2009 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

You know when you go to the dentist, and you’re just sitting there waiting for the hygienist (who already knows the answer — and it ain’t good!) to ask if you’ve been flossing?

That’s sorta how I felt before my makeup trial.

I’m sure alone in my bad skincare habits. For example, I have the tendency to combine makeup removal and face washing in one none-too-gentle step — oops!

Well, there was no fooling Emily.

Simply by looking at my makeup-free face, she identified my skin issues and habitual shortcuts. And she wrote out a pore-focused plan of action to get my face in shape for the wedding:

For my lip balm habit — nay, addiction — Emily recommended Blistex Lip Medex tubs. She cautioned that ChapStick-like “moisturizers” actually dry your lips out! Since I started with Lip Medex, I’ve definitely noticed a difference — my lips are ridiculously smooth, and they retain moisture better than before, so I’m actually reaching for the little tub much less frequently than I was slathering on the stuff from a tube.

She signed off on using moisturizer with SPF daily. Look for an oil free product that lists water as its first ingredient, and contains no animal, vegetable or mineral oil. According to Emily, SPF 15 is fine — but I’m pale (and proud!), so I think I’ll continue with my SPF 30.

(source)

I’ve been washing my face with an Olay cleanser, but Emily advocated changing to Cetaphil. Mr. Bruschetta commented that now, my skin seems to be much less temperamental, and he’s totally right — it’s also smoother and softer than it’s ever been before!

I’m not 16 years old anymore — and neither is my skin. So, I need to start polishing it (once or twice a week, says Emily, with Origins Never A Dull Moment). Formulated with finely ground apricot and mango seeds and papaya extract, it smells almost good enough to eat — and turns our bathroom into a spa-like atmosphere.

Lastly, an eye cream (at morning and night) will help protect this delicate skin. Emily loves ANEW CLINICAL Eye Lift, with a gel side for puffiness and a cream side for wrinkles. I’m already noticing a difference — the under eye dark circles I’m prone to aren’t nearly as noticeable!

What skin care products do you use on a regular basis? And are you doing anything special to perfect your skin for your wedding?

I need to get in to an eye cream ritual myself. I have baaaaad under eye circles. Seriously. Thanks for the tips! My dermatologist told me “cetaphil” too!

Aargh, and you’re only 25! This worries 30-year-old me, who also removes makeup and washes in one fell swoop…

um.. yeah.. I totally just wash my face in one go (make up removal what?). Can you recommend a good make up remover?

I am definitely guilty of doing the eye make up removal by rubbing my eyes in the shower. I use a generic version of neutragina, an alcohol free neutragina toner, and a generic face lotion (lacking spf eeeks!).

At night, I wash my face and put on a night time face cream. I should definitely be a little more gentle of my face….*sigh*

I swear by Blistex Lip Medex! I love the stuff. Used to use normal Blistex but once I found the Lip Medex I never went back. It gets my lips through winter and it’s nice to have around in summer too! Love it. :-)

The rest of my habits aren’t great - I should work on that!

I’m going to get a Vitamin C anti-aging facial (I just had one because it was Spa Week where I live and it was super discounted) about a week before the wedding to tighten any trouble areas and make sure my skin is nice and smooth and refreshed for the wedding. Philosophy makes some great products including their facewash and their anti-aging serum.

I heart Cetaphil for combination skin! Mr. K and I both use it!

What a great blog, thank you! I have been using cetaphil cleanser and daily moisturizer, but the scrub and lip balm would be great additions!

Yeah, I’m bad about not removing makeup before I wash because the soap does a pretty-ok job. What do you use for that?

@Miss Rye Bread: @mary-alice-me: I’m using a Clinique eye makeup remover that honestly, I just had lying around. It’s doing the job of getting off eye shadow and mascara…but I might see what Emily thinks, since she’s been so spot-on with her other recommendations! :-)

Wow, your makeup artist certainly knows her stuff! Her recommendations are very similar to my dermatologist’s! He said the same thing about lips, and also suggested Cetaphil for face, which works great. He also recommended Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion to keep the rest of your skin healthy and silky smooth!

Looove the Avon eye cream. I am only 25, but have dark circles(mostly hereditary)..and it helps so much. I’ve been using this stuff for about 2 months and have noticed a significant improvement in the darkness.

@Mae0926: How long does the Avon eye cream container last? I haven’t really dipped into it TOO much yet, but am wondering how many weeks’ worth is in there, considering I’m using it both in the morning and at night! Thanks!

Wow, I need to get a better skin regimen. I wash my face with Aveeno face cleanser and that’s about it.

I didn’t even realize that removing makeup and then washing your face is supposed to be two separate steps…until reading this post - eek! For chapped lips, there is no better than Aquaphor (made by Eucerin). It’s non addictive, and soothes and moistens. I carry, like 3 tubes around at one time - never using regular chapstick again!

I only wash my face in the shower - eeks! I don’t even bother at night, which I’m sure is when it’s most important. My skin is fine, with the exception of a few minor breakouts around that ‘time of the month.’ I wonder how much better my skin would be if I washed it twice a day (and actually removed my makeup). I’ve been looking for a moisturizer with SPF to firm up my skin. I’m starting to get laugh lines around my eyes and mouth :o(

I loooove Pond’s Cold Cream for taking off make-up. I usually follow that with a cleanser. My face has never been smoother. I’ve always had pretty bad skin, but nowadays I get compliments from random people all the time.

I’ve been using proactiv for a long time, and I think that it really depends on the moisturizer you use. Although the proactiv face wash and toner are ok for my skin, I just need more moisture! eye cream is a must for me, too! Have you considered dermabrasion?

I looove cetaphil. Combining a daily wash with it in the morning and using clearisil pads at night, my skin has been really clear lately!

@Miss Bruschetta: @Miss Bruschetta:
I use the undereye morning and night, and the eyelid one only at night(I find that if I use it in the morning, even if I let it dry, my eyeshadow seems to crease). So far it looks like I’ve only used a bit(and I’ve been using it for about 2 months, maybe a week or two shy…). I would assume it should last for quite awhile longer. I don’t use a lot of either product, just enough to cover both areas, and it seems to work just fine!

I need to start washing my face at night too! I use the Origins scrub and it is great!! Alot of the Origins products are really good. I use the Ponds towelettes to remove make-up and they are awesome I just wish I would do it more often.

I just bought a Clarisonic skin brush. I’m still in the trial phase, don’t know if I love it yet, but I’ll let you know. I should have bought Cetaphil while I was home but I forgot to buy ALL my cool face stuff! Boo!
