A Tony Award-Winning Wedding?

April 20th, 2009 @ 12:33 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

Normally, brides hope for a wedding day free of theatrics. But, when I marry Mr. Bruschetta, I’ll actually be hoping for a bit of flair. See, our priest teaches in the Department of Theatre at Villanova University — and once spent four years working as a professional actor in New York City.

Father David and I became friendly during my junior and senior years. We both love exercising, and often debated news and current events. We share an obsession with Banana Republic, and it was actually following Father David’s recommendation that Mr. Bruschetta purchased his now-beloved Doc Martens. He’s just really not your typical Catholic priest.

Here we are following the Baccalaureate mass the day before graduation.

After Mr. Bruschetta proposed, I wrote to Father David — a letter, since we’d lost touch while I was in grad school, and I felt an email would be too informal — asking if he would act as our celebrant. He followed up with a phone call, gladly accepting our offer. In order to ensure Father David will be able to celebrate with us the entire day (and not have to share his time with another wedding), the very first wedding-related decision we made was to shift our focus from early September to late August. I didn’t even want to consider another presider for our nuptial mass!

Do you have a special relationship with your celebrant?

Not only is Rev David a close from of me and my fiance… he’s just an incredible speaker who can get any person really listening to his words. He will be fantastic at making everyone laugh and I’m pretty sure cry! I’m so glad I have someone that will be marrying us that have seen us together since the beginning of our relationship and is actually a friend of ours as well.

Our officiant also taught theater at a university! (cornell)
We’re so excited for her to marry us - the best part is that she’s Mr. Rye’s grandma! :)

My minister is my uncle who once got down on his knees at Six Flags and thanked Jesus for the roller coaster ride from which he had just exited. Should be a fun ceremony! :)

@mary-alice-me: Not as well as he and I know each other, but we’ve met up with him together a few times, and we always end up chatting nonstop — and for much longer than we had anticipated. At our first meeting, Chris ended up examining his ankle after Father David complained it was hurting during his runs…so now they talk “shop” about aches, pains and physical therapy. ;-)

Yes. FI’s uncle is a Catholic priest and is marrying us in the church I grew up in.

Our officiant is my fiance and I’s college pastor. We’re both very close to him and definitely made sure our date fit into his calendar!

Thats so nice! I’m sure he’ll give a great ceremony! We wanted to use a priest from our alma mater, he also happens to be my fi’s close friend’s uncle, but since graduation, he has left the priesthood. Now we are using a priest at a parish we both volunteered at during our freshman year, althoguh we never met the priest.

That is so great you have such a personal relationship :)
I’ve known our officiant since high school and I used to babysit her son.

We had a friend’s dad–AKA “my hip-pocket priest”–do the ceremony. He had recently retired and was happy to keep his hand in, as it were, and it was great to have someone we knew. The only trouble: he’d only met the groom twice, and he just could not remember his middle name. So even though we had a friend of the family marry us, we still got the “we are gathered here today in the presence of God and these witnesses to celebrate the marriage of [my full name] and [...pause...riffle through program...]…”

Our priest was is the rector of my home church and has known us for years. It made a HUGE difference to us as the sermon was perfect and very “us”. Speaking of theatrics, our priest used to be in a rock band before seminary, and we got him to sing Mustang Sally at the reception!! It was a hit!
