Bridal Tea: Gifts For the Guests

April 20th, 2009 @ 11:28 am by Mrs. Beagle

This weekend, my FMIL hosted my first bridal shower. I knew she was bringing gifts for all the guests, and since I wasn’t sure what the proper etiquette was, I decided to get quick gifts together for all the guests, as well. Since the shower had a “tea party” theme, I thought a tea-themed gift would be appropriate. I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday to pick up some paper bags, which were kind of expensive… and I also found some at Target, which were really cheap.

However, the Target bags were really wrinkled and were kind of lopsided when I tried to stand them up… so I went with the alternative. (Lesson learned: cheap is not always better.) I also picked up two boxes of tea (what else?) and a package of cookies from Target. I supplemented this with some more cookies that I baked Saturday morning… thank you, Martha Stewart.

I trimmed the tops of the bags to create the bumpy edge. I created slits in the paper bag with an X-Acto knife and just pulled a ribbon (bought from Hobby Lobby-isn’t it tea party-ish?) through, tied a pretty knot, and snipped the ends. Unfortunately, this project was kind of thrown together at the last minute because, like the rest of Austin, I was suffering from severe allergies for most of last week. However, I think the guests still enjoyed them, and appreciated the thought and effort.

Martha Stewart’s Recipe for French Butter Cookies:

  • 1 c unsalted butter, room temp.
  • 2/3 c packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 c flower (sifted)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt (I didn’t include this, and they tasted fine)
  • 1/2 c granulated sugar
  1. Combine sugar and brown sugar in an electric mixer and cream on high speed until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and mix to combine. Add the flour and salt, and mix on low speed until the flour is incorporated.
  2. Roll the dough into 3-1 1/2 in. diameter logs. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour or overnight (I refrigerated mine overnight).
  3. Preheat oven to 350. Line baking sheet w/ parchment paper (I used wax paper). Roll the cookie logs in the granulated sugar, coating them evenly, and slice into 1/4 in. rounds. Place them on a baking sheet about 1 in. apart.
  4. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 20 mins. Remove from baking sheet and let cool completely. Cookies will keep at room temperature in an airtight container up to 1 week.

Anyone else stumbling through wedding etiquette 101? Are you giving your guests gifts at your shower?

I am contemplating putting some gifts together for my showers too, I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to or not but I LOVE giving gifts even if they are little! Cookies are a great idea, maybe I’ll do that too!

I’m 100% stumbling through etiquette 101 these days! I just put together gifts for the 13 hostesses for my bridal tea this upcoming weekend. But, I never thought about gifts for the guests. Hum….I’ll have to give that some quick thought and research now! You came up with a great (quick) idea that I might need to “borrow” :)

I didn’t give the guests gifts. I had hoped to give my 3 bridesmaids, who hosted it, a gift, but in the end I just ran out of time and money trying to select something. I don’t know what the etiquette is on that, but I sure felt guilty about it. :(

I love your posts- you are so crafty! That is such a great idea, and a wonderful way to spruce up some otherwise plain-looking paper sacks!

I gave gifts to my bridesmaids and the hostess but not the guests. Actually, I think my bms would have been a bit weirded out had I brought something. So probably check with your hostess first… after all, this is a party they are giving for you!

Your gifts are super cute! Love the ribbon and packaging :) I do think it is essential to give the hostess(es) of the shower a gift as a gesture of your appreciation to them for hosting a party for you. However, I do not think it is poor etiquette if the bride does not give a gift to each guest. Since you are the guest of honor at the bridal shower you should not be expected to have a gift for every single person who attends. From my experiences (which are a lot!) of attending bridal showers- usually the hostess has a small favor (candy, notepads, tea, etc…) of some kind for each guest at the shower. Think of it this way, when you attend a bridal shower for someone else, do you expect to receive a present from the bride-to-be? No. You are there to “shower” her. I am sure your guests will love your gifts, but for anyone else out there wondering, it’s not bad etiquette if you aren’t prepared with a gift for each guest!

It’s so hard to know what is expected! It seems like everyone has their own personal etiquitee book! I think it was so sweet of you to make an additional gift for the guests. Very thoughtful!

The etiquette I always follow for those I have given and for my bridal shower in the fall is that the host provide gifts for guests and the honoree gives gifts to hosts.

This is a terrific shower idea. I’m not doing a shower, so no gifts to worry about, however I am doing bags for my guests and will probably piggy back on your design idea. Those are too cute!
