Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

We went to the Homestead this weekend for our final planning trip before the wedding! This time, we brought our officiant… just because (more on that later). Ostensibly, we were there to go over some final details of the timeline, menu choices, and logistics with our coordinator (ugh, there was a problem with the cake… again, more on that later). And we met our new, local, start-up florist (hmm, more on that, too)!!!

I also had a makeup and hair trial. Here were my inspirations:

Eva Longoria’s loosely pinned up hair with some wispy pieces.

Here, Rachel Weisz wears it as a faux bob. Perfect for a vintage-y wedding. However, there’s a fine line between wispy and prom ringlets, so I wasn’t sure if the hairdresser could pull it off. I also had the vague notion of having it pinned to the side so I can let it down in to a side pony tail for the reception. Like this:

So here’s how it went down….

Final Planning Trip Part I: Makeup and Hair Trial : wedding hair makeup trial Makeup

(Top left) Everyday face and undone hair; (top right): The hairdresser curled my hair with a 1 inch curling iron, spiraling around the iron to create the loose waves, teased the top a little, then pinned it to the side very loosely (bottom left); she also did my makeup and made me look really tan (why?) and put on a frosty pink lipstick (I was surprised to like it); I also took down the pins to see what the side pony would look like (bottom right).

Overall she did an okay job—but not $280 worth of okay. I don’t want to have to pay that again if I can do it myself. So I’m strongly considering DIYing (at least the makeup; the hair, with some adjustments will work—what do you think?).

I like the idea of the rosy cheek and frosty pink lips a la Miss Portman’s goddess look:

So I tried it out this morning before work. I definitely think I need to go darker on the eyes, but I didn’t want to scare anyone in the office:

What do you think? Should I DIY my own makeup or just leave it to the pro? I’m going to do a DIY hair trial too (keep you posted).

You’re so very photogenic! I love your makeup and with a bit darker eye I think it is a fantastic look! I love the hair and pink lip color.
One thing to consider, is you could be a bit nervous or preoccupied on the day of the wedding (it’s only natural) and that’s why I want somebody else to do my hair and makeup.

1.) You’re ridiculously pretty. Stop it. Jk (maybe).
2.) I think you could totally DIY the make up. From the looks of your everyday and what you did for work, you know what looks best. I agree with heavier eyes, too
3.) The hair pulled to the side looked really really good. Not sure if you want a total updo, but I think I like the curled, side-pony idea for the whole day. Excited to see your DIY hair results!

Love the frosty pink lips — but I’d keep searching for a hair person, because that style (while gorgeous) seems simple enough that you could do it yourself…and if you’d like a pro, you could totally go with a more complicated look, you know?

I would kill for your skin and makeup skills!!! I’d say if you feel confident enough to DIY the makeup, go for it. But I’d still say get someone else to do your hair - you’ll have enough to worry about that day, it might be nice to just sit for a bit and have someone else play with your ‘do.

I don’t regert DIYing my makeup, I do regret how I chose to have my hair done (I asked an aunt who is a hairdresser but doesn’t do updos). I wish I had hired someone to come to the hotel and do my hair, but still done my makeup myself. I’d go a little heavier on the blush and the eyes, but leave the lips the way they are. Are you going to go with fake lashes? The individual ones are a really natural looking choice I think.

I agree w/ the rest: you’re lovely! I also agree: DIY the makeup, and keep the hair professionally styled (I like the adaptability of the pinned up versus pinned down). Just my 2 cents!

even though it was a whole 280 smakeroos, that hairstyle is hot!
… I think I might finally have some style inspiration!

I think you did a really good job, but I am in love with the hairdo you had done. You look stunning. If you are happy with the DIY, go for that, but if you really like the other, maybe splurge a little?

Wow, thanks everyone! I keep going back and forth on the makeup because the stylist seems to know what she’s doing and I learned a thing or two from her (e.g. the lips and some countouring with bronzer), I was still worried about the eyes. So thanks for validating my efforts!!!!

I think I agree, I’ll have her do the hair.

@Mrs. Avocado: First, I kept looking at your DIY makeup in the gallery and was amazed–but you’re naturally pretty anyway. And also, you’re totally right! I really need some eyelashes!!! I was thinking about the extensions, but I read Mrs. Seabreeze’s experience in a board about them being annoying after a while. So I’ll try the little disposable ones like you said. And yes, more blush and eyeshadow–I trust your photographic eye! ;)

Definitely DIY your own make-up, your “trail” looks great! and I love that hair styel, but if you can DIY that as well, I say GO FOR IT, no need to pay that much :)
