Mrs. Mary Jane's Picture
Mrs. Mary Jane, Grand Forks, ND Age and Occupation: 26, Instructional Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lead Programmer Engagement Date: February 28, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: City Hall About Me: I'm a career woman on the surface and a homemaker at heart. I love fast cars and high heels, and my favorite food is cake. Mr. Mary Jane and I are both full-time employees and students, and we just bought our first house. We love to curl up on the couch with buttery popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and the latest Netflix arrival -- whenever we can get a break from everyday life.
About Mrs. Mary Jane

I hate that my parents live so far from me, but I love how easily mom and I can communicate by e-mail. My mom and I spent a lot of time emailing dress links back and forth on the day immediately following my unsuccessful dress-shopping outing. I was trying to find a vintage, modern, sophisticated, or cute dress to wear for the simple parents-only civil ceremony we’re planning.

My mom was on her best “mom” behavior: she vetoed what she thought wouldn’t look good on me, what she thought was trendy or odd, and anything she just plain didn’t like. On one hand, this was rather annoying (I mean, it’s my style and my wedding, right?). But on the other hand, it was helpful. Mom was trying to help me find a dress that would look good not just on the day of our wedding, but also in our photos for years to come. See, my mom doesn’t go crazy with seasonal clothes. Instead she buys classic, simple pieces that outlast the trends and fads. Mom gave the thumbs down to my lacy tiers and my shutter-pleats, instead steering me toward simple ivory a-line and empire styles.

Soon I had several Firefox tabs open, each one containing a dress from Nordstrom, Macy’s or J.Crew. Some were of mom’s choosing, some were mine, and others were dresses we both agreed on. I decided to start my ordering frenzy with Nordstrom’s. I had six promising Nordstrom options but no Nordstrom store within 250 miles. Lucky for me, they were offering free shipping! Even luckier: no Nordstrom stores are located in my state (so no sales-tax). I added all six dresses to my cart, then carefully combed their return policy at least three times before making the most expensive clothing order I’ve ever placed in my life.

The dresses took what seemed like forever to arrive. The order I placed on Thursday finally shipped on the following Tuesday. Soon after that, my dear Mr. Mary Jane received this at his office:

I couldn’t wait to unpack them and try them on. Are you ready for some photos? I thought so.

All professional photos of the dresses are from Nordstrom.com. I left the photos pretty big; I like big photos of pretty dresses, how about you? Mr. MJ took the photos of me. Sorry about the coloring - it was a difficult lighting situation and I did a poor job editing them in Photoshop. In person, the dresses were pretty true to the photos from the Nordstrom website. Without further delay, here they are.

Phoebe Rosette Empire Waist Silk Gown:
My mom really liked this one on the web site. I wasn’t convinced, but I ordered it. (Why not?)

1

I did not like the fit of this dress at all, and no one else did either. ’Nuff said.

dresspart2-rosetteMe

Cachet Beaded Waist Jersey Gown:
Simple and flowy.

2

This was the least expensive dress, and it showed. I could see the built-in-bra padding through the fabric. It also made me look like a chunky monkey with a square butt (IMO).

Moving on….

BCBGMAXAZRIA Lace & Tulle Tier Gown:
I love the look of this gown, but no one else I showed it to did. It was my big dress order though, so I ordered it anyway. (It was also the most expensive of the dresses, so I decided I wouldn’t be too disappointed if it didn’t wow me.)

3

I thought this dress looked great on me, but it was much too fancy for our occasion and wouldn’t fit the “scene” at all. It was also not really fitting to my personality. It didn’t take a lot to convince me; as I said before, this was the most expensive dress I ordered.

BCBGMAXAZRIA Laser Cut Satin Gown:
I wanted to try a different style/shape, and this one looked pretty cool (though it looks funny on the model, IMO).

4

I really liked this dress on me, but again it was too much for a daytime courthouse wedding. It was also perhaps a little too sexy. The main issue I had with it was the weight of the fabric; it was a heavy dress, but the fabric was stretchy, not structured. Think about it… heavy, forgiving fabric + strapless design? Yeah… I wore it for about 5 minutes and had to pull it up half a dozen times. It kept slipping down.

Calvin Klein Lace Bodice Gown & Twist Front Bolero:
This is actually a “Mother of the Bride” dress. The Bolero ties in the back with a chunky bow. I think it would come in handy on a late summer evening. (I’m pretty much cold all the time.)

5

This was comfortable and fit me well. It probably would have looked better if I had ironed it and tied the bolero properly. (The photos don’t really do it justice either.) But either way, it was just too much. My mom thought it looked like it was for an older person - and while I thought it was very classy, I did agree. It is a “mother of the bride” dress, after all. This was one of my two favorite dresses, but it was just too fancy for what we’re planning (since what we’re planning is “not much”).

Finally, the last dress.

Calvin Klein Charmeuse Gown with Lace Bolero:
How cute is that delicate little bolero? Really cute, that’s how cute.

6

Bonus pic: me grinning like a goon in the bolero:

“Hay guyz!”

This was the hands-down favorite dress between myself, Mr. Mary Jane, and my mom. It was also very unforgiving; I’d have to watch my weight very carefully throughout the summer, and I’d definitely need Spanx. I was willing to do that for this dress. It was definitely the best one. But guess what? I didn’t keep it. Like all of the others, it really was just too fancy.

If there’s one thing I learned from this experience, it’s that I really shouldn’t be searching for a wedding dress (even “cheap” ones from department stores). This is (by all intents and purposes) not a wedding. Our wedding is a civil ceremony and I really want to give it that look and feel. I’m not making concessions; I really want something that suits the occasion. A floor-length, shimmery dress isn’t going to do that for me.

I returned all six of the dresses and decided to try what my grandmother did almost 60 years ago…

…I ordered a brown suit.

Did you order a bunch of dresses online before you found “the one”?

Oooo, love the last one on you — in another color, that’d be an amazing black tie event dress!

I love No. 1 or the Phoebe. It looks lovely, but you’re right it is probably best to go with something you are comfortable in.

I love both of the BCBGs, but agree that they are too formal. When do we get to see a picture of your suit?

I have to say, I love the BCBS lace and tulle tier gown…that looked fabulous on you! And it is a really sweet dress.

That’s great that you found something in the end that fits your personality and your event! Will we see pictures soon?! And, at the end of the day on the Sex & the City movie, Carrie rocked the suit and looked super glam doing it! :)

That is such a neat way to shop for dresses — all in your home! I also like the laser cut one, but I can see why you didn’t choose these for your ceremony.

I agree, and like the last one the best, but it does feel overly fancy. Did you look into any tea length gowns? Those tend to create a more casual air.

I do think there is something very classic and elegant about a courthouse wedding with a very classy and nice suit. I’m eager to see how this story ends!!

Suit pics…. coming right up! (But don’t even start to think that this dress-saga is over after only three installments. Miss Mary Jane is much too indecisive for that!)

Ooooh the last dress is so beautiful on you! I love the vintage look. I haven’t done this with dresses… but with shoes, well that’s another story. :)

Love the fashion show though! I thought the BCBGMAXAZRIA Lace & Tulle Tier Gown was SO ADORABLE! I think you should get it just because…I might go buy it for me, I liked it so much!

@Cranley04 - I didn’t like the side-view; it gave me kind of a bubble-butt. Very comfy dress though, if anyone is curious to try it themselves.

@Bruschetta - I think they do sell that one (or similar) in other colors… if you look for Calvin Klein gowns under evening wear at Macy’s or Nordstrom, I saw some really similar looking ones.

I think the laser-cut gown is an amazing fit on you! But you’re right, too fancy. I’m interested to learn why a brown suit instead of white/ivory…. I’m sure you’ll tell us. :)

No brown suit! please no!
check out olivialuca.com and kimera.com for cool, flirty dresses.

How about a bridesmaid dress?

I think you try on some short dresses. Long dress=formal.

I am a short dress bride. I didn’t even wear a long dress to my proms!

I like the lazer cut dress. So what if it’s a touch glamorous..you looked fab in that! You look good in the one you like, but if you had a nip and tuck in the lazer cut dress, you’d feel great in it too. It was very very flattering on you.

And strapless is FINE..you could always have a pashmina with it in the courthouse to make it a bit toned down too.

Perfectly suited

My grandmother wore a nice suit to her wedding, too. That wasn’t exactly renegade behavior at the time, even for a church ceremony, which is what they had. Most people got married in their best clothes. I tried to keep the picture of my grandparents in their wedding attire (and the devoted, life-long marriage that they began in those clothes) in mind when I went shopping. I bought a beautiful cocktail dress that was not intended to be a wedding dress, but that I love. Good luck to you, Miss MJ! I am sure your wedding outfit will be lovely!

@bellenga - The laser cut was hot… but the problem it was that I really NEEDED straps. The thing kept slipping down around my waist! D-:

Have you considered wearing a short dress?

Mrs. Onion did a great post about short dress brides: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/02/16/short-dress-brides/#more-83420

It might be a way to have a pretty dress that isn’t so formal - plus you can jazz it up with some shoes and accessories - a la Carrie Bradshaw in SATC the movie!

You look super hot in the last one Miss MJ! But I can see how you would feel it’s a bit too fancy for what you want. I can’t wait to see the suit.

Have you checked out Alfred Angelo’s website? Are you stuck on a long dress? I have seen many pretty short dresses on their website, as well as long ones; I actually bought mine from them-it’s very different, I haven’t seen mine posted by any other bride so far and it is perfect for my beach elopement (Style 1142). Good luck!!

i know you said you already bought a brown suit, but if that doesn’t work out for you may I make a suggestion? There has been a great Isaac Mizrahi clearance sale going on at target.com for awhile now. And it is apparently only lasting until April 30th.

I found a ton of cute cocktail dresses and even more formal dresses at that sale. shipping was free over $50 and you can return a lot of the items in store. I encourage you to check it out. They have some “bridal” dresses by Isaac remaining. But some of the other dresses could be used too. Just go to target.com, click on the “women” tab, then click Isaac Mizrahi clearance sale, and then click on “dresses”.

Most of the dresses I bought were around $20, and they are beautiful satin dresses!

OH MY GOODNESS! I LOVE you in the Lace & Tulle Tier Gown. Why is it too formal? You are the bride! You look smashing in it!

Also, check out Clair Pettibone’s Rock and Roll Bride collection 2009-cute cute short dresses that you would rock!

For those who thought I should wear the Lace & Tulle: Thanks a bunch. I thought it was a really cute, comfy dress and I looked really good in it. However, I really didn’t feel like it fit the style I have envisioned for our day, nor does it really fit who I am very well…. plus it was WAY more than I wanted to spend on a dress, so I did return it. I recommend it though - it was forgiving and comfy.

For those who are suggesting short dresses: I’ll get there! I originally wanted a long dress because I do not care for my knees. Upon trying on a bunch, however, I found that I just wasn’t feelin’ them. I’m off to look at some of the sites y’all suggested!

Oh and to those who mentioned Carrie’s dress from SATC - I loooooooove the way she rocked that. I’m finding that I don’t like the way I look in the more business-like outfits… but if i could get my hands on that exact suit I’d be pretty thrilled I think!

I love love love that you made a big dress order. I’ve been oggling nordstrom.com, too, and it’s great to see the dresses on a “real” person. You look great in all of them, but I can tell from your body language that you haven’t found “the one” yet. ;) Good luck searching!

I bought the J. Crew Sophia dress (when it was on sale for $69.99) and I absolutely LOVE it. You’re much smaller than me (I’m a size 12ish) and it just flows over any curves beautifully. You should check it out, it would look great on you. I have pictures on myself in it if you would like to see someone other than a model in the dress I can send them on. E-mail me at KArthur123 at hotmail dot com if you’re interested. Best of luck in finding your outfit!

KArther123 - we’re not that different - all of the dresses above are 10’s! It is a really pretty and versatile dress… a few of my friends have used it as a bridesmaid dress. Good suggestion!

I’m just going to say this for myself, and maybe it won’t mean anything to you Miss MJ but since you made recurring statements about the vision of your wedding, and you’re one of the few bees representing a simpler way to get hitched, I just gotta say it. I really wish that throughout your planning process you free yourself to make certain choices that don’t fit with your lil’ courthouse wedding vision of your big day. I’m a casual, small budget bride, doing an at home wedding, so I understand that you want to make sure you “keep it real” in terms of your original vision of what your day is like. However, should there come a big decision where you feel torn between what you want and what you think your wedding should ahve, I hope you’ll allow yourself some leniancy (you are not having a non-wedding. You are still having a wedding). Let yourself have at least one wedding day over-indulgence–after all you might not be having a BIG wedding but you’re still a bride!

Thanks, West Coast Bride - your insight is really valuable - something that I think a LOT of brides deal with. I did for sure! I honestly think that part of this whole dress-buying experience has helped me try to figure out who “me” is in terms of my wedding day apparel. I am NOT a fancy pants lacy and tulle puffy floor length ball gown sparkly sparkle gal. I am a blue jeans and birkenstocks gal who’s trying to find something that’s not pants to wear when I get married. (If our parents weren’t going, I probably *would* be wearing jeans!) Figuring out that I didn’t NEED to spend upwards of $500 or $1000 to look like a bride was the biggest breakthrough for me :).

Oh man, all those dresses look great on you…especially the BCBG one. But, if you do not like it, you shouldn’t get it. Have you checked outSaja Bridal out of NY? I also wanted a non weddingy dress myself, and I ended up getting one on sale at a local boutique..I spent $446. Normally the’re on the $600-$700, but like I said, I got mine on sale.

I actually liked the first dress you tried on. But it’s all about how YOU feel in it! Btw, I’m totally considering the Calvin Klein Lace Bodice Gown & Twist Front Bolero for my mom’s dress. I agree that while it is really classy, it is just made for a mom!

I saw that lasercut one while looking for bridesmaids dresses and I really wished I had seen it before buying my dress. The price was right! And I think it looked great on you. I’m glad you said it didn’t stay up well, now I can write it off as flawed in my head and not worry about not trying it out.

Transatlatntic Bride

I actually chose the Calvin Klein dress for my wedding, only it doesn’t have the lace bit.
Here’s the fun part - I get married in 2 weeks and a half weeks and have never actually seen the dress in person or tried it on. We got engaged in February, decided to get married in June, in between me transferring from my transatlantic job back to North America. We’re going for small, immediate family only. I’ve only been given two days off from work. Ever tried to organize a wedding with a five hour time difference?
I loved seeing the dress on you. It gave me a better idea of what it would look like on a real person and it looks great. Phew. It’s hard to get a feel for it when online shopping.
