About Mrs. Labrador

I love candy. I have a huge sweet tooth.

But a diet high in sugar doesn’t exactly have a place in pre-wedding body preparation. So I’ve decided to put a light at the end of the wedding fitness tunnel in the form of a candy buffet at our reception! I get to have this night to splurge, so I’m not going to feel guilty about it at all.

One of Mr. Lab’s classmates heard about my candy buffet plan and offered to lend me the jars she used at her wedding! That’s a big check off my “purchases” list. She showed me a picture of the jars and they’re absolutely gorgeous! Thanks Daphne! Here they are at her wedding:

Now I have to decide whether to do a monochromatic theme or variety of colors with the candy.

And then I’ll have to choose the types of candy after I do that. I could do a lot of “scooping” candy, or traditional wrapped candies like you see in convenience stores. I do know that there will be some salt-water taffy in honor of Savannah! Here are some of my inspirations:

I’ve also decided on our wedding favors! I really wanted something personal that fit in with not only our overall theme, but also the season. Since it’s an autumn wedding in the south, I chose candy apples! We can make them ourselves at a very low cost and they are absolutely charming. Who doesn’t like candy apples? (Okay, other than those with braces or a loose tooth, or dentures, LOL.)

Here’s more inspiration:

What are some unique ways to spice up a candy buffet?

So fun. My sister is doing one. Have you looked at the wiki on candy buffets? There are links to old bee posts and some awesome ideas. My sister and I were looking through it last night.

I persoanlly love swirly loillpops and rock cansy at candy buffets. I don’t eat either, but I think they look so pretty!

Wow! I love them! I second the take out boxes. And I’d totally go for a colorful variety, or at least a spectrum related to your wedding colors. :)

How neat! I would love to go to a wedding with a candy buffet. I think you should include ribbons or bows around your containers — like in several of your inspiration photos — to spice things up. Or have red-hots ;)

Oh - I love the ribbon. We’re doing a candy buffet and I have just the ribbon. Yay. Thanks for the post.

The candy apples are such a great idea! You’ll have such fun making them-that will be a cute post!

Adorable ribbons are of course an easy spruce up to a candy buffet, but you can also find pretty wrapping paper and wrap different boxes to use to put the jars on to create different levels and to add more color! I can;t wait to see your final choices. (chantsL MikeandIkeMikeandIkeMikeandIkeMikeandIke)

Love your ideas! I have the same candy buffet photo as my inspiration (the pastel one) and I can’t decide if I want to go with our colors or just do pastels. I’m curious to see what you decide.

Great that you’re getting the containers to borrow. A friend of mine actually has a few jars as a permanent candy/snack display in her house on an end table in some of those containers. Makes for easy snacking for live in family as well as visiting friends. I’ve been buying mine on the cheap from second hand stores as I find them. We’re going to have a combination of containers trays and stands for the munchy buffet. I love the candy apple idea and am thinking about making a few for our wedding as well. I’ve made carmal apples before with the tubs of caramel dip you can buy from the produce section and I can tell you it can be pretty thick. It did stick to the sides but also tended to puddle on the bottom of the apple. I’m not sure if a homemade caramel sauce would work any differently. A friend of mine and I plan to have a caramel apple night soon so perhaps we’ll try that. You could also melt the caramel cubes individual rapped candies and try using that as well. Chocolate dipped apples are also good. Toppings are easy to put together also. Things like chopped nuts, chopped oreos or other cookies (maybe ginger snaps), mini marshmallows, toffee bits, minced butter finger bars, toasted coconut and other things. You can also color white cholate and drizzle that on to add your wedding colors. Do a search on google for shops that sell caramel and choclate covered appels for more ideas. You can’t make the caramel or chcolate covered ones and expect them to last a week. The apples will go bad. When we make some more I’m goign to make one of each and see how long they will last. I know from the last time we made them the apple around the sticks were brown so I’m thinking alos about trying to dip the sticks in citric acid or maybe lemon juice before they go into the apples to prevent this.
I’m also thinking about making some of the candy myself. I’ve made toffee and chocolate chunks like almond roca before that’s always a hit. I’m going to try some homemade marshmallows this week. Truffles are pretty easy to make but, can be time consuming. I have a recipe for a candy like snickers bar that can be cut into cubes. I’ll also likely be making butter mints, and candied nuts. The Mr and I both love popcorn so we’ll have bags premade the night before so they won’t go stale sitting out. There are advantages of making snacks that can be cut or borken into bite size pieces vs. ones that will have to be rolled and shaped; it will take less time to make and shape, and they will hold their shape easier once on display. I’m also thinking about possibly having a couple different kinds of cookies and maybe brownies. Still in the planning stages though.

yum yum yum, I want to come to your wedding!!! You could also have the apples double as place cards… the name and table number could go on the top, and the thank you favor part on the inside of a tag. yum, now I want caramel apples!!!! ;)

Candy apple advice—We made caramel apples as guest gifts for my best friends wedding. She ordered the caramel off line (http://www.daffyapple.com/c-5-bulk-caramel.aspx) and it came in these big tubs. She ordered sticks, cellophane and clear boxes to but them in. We did a making day, where we stuck them with a stick, dipped them in caramel, rolled them in toppings (reeses pieces, oreo crumbs, peanuts, heath bar) and then wrapped them in cellophane to store. We made them about 3 days in advance, but we tested and they store in a fridge for over a week. On the day of the wedding we put them in the clear boxes, stuck a sticker with the wedding date info on it and tied a little ribbon in her colors. It was awesome and such a “sweet” treat to take home.

If we weren’t having a cookie table, I would so have a candy buffet. I love all the glassware you have and even better that you get them on loan! Sweet deal!

I plan on doing a candy buffet as well, in monochromatic colors (reds, browns and oranges). Wish I had someone to lend me their jars. You got lucky!!

@Miss Taffy: I think I may just use them as place cards!

Sounds like you are off to a great start. You can also do some great packaging with labels that have your wedding monogram or another symbol that represents your theme.
