Quest For the Wedding Bands

April 20th, 2009 @ 3:51 pm by Mrs. Piglet

After much reluctance, I sized down my engagement ring. The ring, as-is, too often rested at the tip of my knuckle on the verge of falling off. It did once while we were vacationing, so Mr Piglet insisted we visit our ring master at Quest Jewelers, Huan, to size it down. Quest Jewelers is a family owned business run by Huan and his brothers. Do you have certain vendors that are used and abused within your circle of friends? Well, for my circle of friends, it’s Huan. Thinking about it, I can name three people this past year that have gone with Quest for their ring purchases. Huan worked with Mr Piglet to custom design a ring that satisfied all the Cs, plus the fourth and most important C according to Mr Piglet, cost. :D

Meet Huan and his girlfriend Daphne. How lucky is she to be dating a jeweler! :) We pretty much decided from the get-go that we were going to get our rings from Quest. So while my ring was being resized, we checked out rings!

Mine was easy. I pointed to my ring, and said, “just like this!” Done. So I guess Huan will take my original ring design, and produce another piece of beautiful finger art.

Mr Piglet is not a jewelry person. He thinks he has malformed sausage fingers that just don’t look right with a ring on ‘em. All he wants is something simple, comfortable, and price friendly. We decided to go with the comfort fit style in palladium. Palladium ordinarily costs more than white gold, but because the value of gold has tanked, the palladium ring ended up being priced lower than the white gold. Crazy.

That was easy. In and out in about twenty minutes with a resized engagement ring, and finalized selections on our wedding bands.

How easy/difficult was your wedding band search?

I was just at Quest on Saturday actually looking at wedding bands! I can’t say figuring out what kind of band to get has been easy for me but I was happy with the ideas I got from Huan and hope to settle on something very soon.

I’m impressed. I am still on the wedding band hunt. My fiance was quick– he picked on, liked it, ordered it, got it in and is sticking with it. Me on the other hand? I picked on out the same day…and a month later returned it…it just wasn’t right (thank godness for the 90 day return policy at “our” jewelry store). About a month and a half ago..i was browsing and found another band…was this the one? Bought it, took it home, and alas, yesterday I returned that one too…it just wasn’t “me”. So now I’m onto band attempt number three– I ordered one yesterday, much simpler, no diamonds…just some funky little hammered design…so in a week, i’ll see if its the band for me! I feel so silly…am I the only one that is having trouble finding a band to match my e-ring?

So neat that you all frequent the same shop. Maybe Mr Piglet can keep buying you jewelry from them. That’s a nice looking ring, and your Mr doesn’t have weird fingers at all!

Aww, they’re a cute couple! Our search was fairly easy! We wanted matching wedding bands and as soon as I chose which one I liked, the FI just got a larger version of mine! :)

We showed up early (REALLY early) to a friend’s cookout, and after apologizing for at least ten minutes, we headed out to kill some time and let them get set up. There were two strip malls, a small mall, and some other shops nearby, and by the time the party actually started (two hours later), we had rings in hand.

We’ll be using the family jeweler, same place the FI bought my e-ring. We haven’t picked out wedding bands yet, but we both know what we want.

I’m totally clueless here. How does the price of gold falling make palladium cheaper than gold, if it’s usually more expensive than gold?

Your engagement ring is beautiful, by the way!

@d - woops. gold is on the rise. so palladium being quoted lower than gold was odd since it’s usually more expensive.

“Palladium ordinarily costs more than white gold, but because the value of gold has tanked, the palladium ring ended up being priced lower than the white gold.”

I am actually a little confused by this comment. The price of palladium has been very reasonable for a few years now. And I would not say that gold has “tanked” unless “tanked” means an price or value increase - its market price is currently $200 more than it was in November of 2008. Even when this article was written, an ounce of gold was in the $900 range. The price of palladium has recently risen as well, and currently resides in the very affordable $200 range. Aside from currently costing less than gold, palladium is naturally white and a better choice over white gold (which is not).

Keep in mind that any consumer’s best option is to educate themselves about all the common metal choices for wedding bands, engagement rings and jewelry - platinum, palladium, gold and even sterling silver. After all, jewelry can be considered and investment, and an educated consumer is the jewelry industry’s best customer. It’s good to also realize that metals prices fluctuate - kind of like how oil and other commodities do.

FYI - the market price of palladium has been falling since 2001 (it had a peak of $1100). And probably since 2003 or 2004, it has for the most part been less than gold on a steady basis.
