Gimme Gimme More!

April 21st, 2009 @ 10:31 am by Mrs. D'orsay

More flowers, that is! In retrospect, I should have planned our wedding around growing season. This way we could have lots of purple flowers like sweet peas and grape hyacinth. Instead, I’m left scrambling for summer’s scraps of purple.

It’s okay though; I’m learning to love the flowers I can get and be grateful for them. Not to mention, I’m becoming very talented at internet searches. Can I put that on my resume? In case you’re looking for lavender flowers in August, here are a few that we’ll probably be using for my bouquet. More than half have been approved by our florist, and the other half I’m waiting to hear back about.

That’s lavender, lavender spray roses, lavender hydrangea, lavender stock (seeing a pattern here…), brunia, lavender freesia, lavender carnations, lavender lisianthus, lavender roses and lavender sweetheartrRoses (not pictured).

We’re working to make an August version of this spring bouquet.

Since the bridesmaids’ dresses are a dark purple, I’m checking out different white flowers for contrast. You know what I dig? I like spider mums, and normal mums, and button mums. I’ll just say it - I love mums. I think that this bouquet in a slightly smaller size would be lovely for the girls.

I think that that specific bouquet has dahlias in it, but I don’t think that those are in season in August. In fact, for all the research I’ve been doing, growing seasons seem to be floating in and out of my head and I’m not even sure anymore when anything is growing. All I know is that bulb flowers, sweet peas, and peonies are all out of the picture. Boo that.

Have your flower choices been easy? Or have you had to hunt them down?

I swear, this is one of those things they should warn future brides about early on - I know it seems so obvious and logical, but I too never really thought about the fact that some flowers would be “out of season” come wedding time… and either unavailable or prohibitively expensive! We lucked out big time and are getting married in May, so there are many flowers to choose from, but I’ve really been enjoying your flower quest and the alternatives you’ve come up with.

Here is a great website that you can pick you color and month, and it will provide a list of flowers that should be available. It is actually a wholesale company so they should know!

I’ve had flower troubles too, many due to the fact that ranunculus aren’t in season in September. I love your inspiration photos though, I’m sure your flowers will be beautiful! I am also a big fan of mums!

I’m sure your flowers will be gorgeous!

Selecting flowers has been such a daunting task for me! I just can’t get into it. :)

MarryingtheNavy, I couldnt agree more with you! I have an early September wedding and went to meet the florist armed wth my dream bouquet - all cream peonies, spray roses, and ranunculus - only to have it shot down and realize I dislike most of what is available at that time. It has been kind of a nightmare for MY bouq only - the rest of the flowers will be ok, but I want fluffy and textured. Sigh…had I only known. I have that copy of elegant bride by the way, and I still look at it all the time. That bouquet makes me drool. Be sure to show us the final version asap!!

I love the idea of the white flowers to contrast your BMs dresses. The whole thing pulled together will be absolutely vibrant and beautiful!! You’ve come a long way (unlike me) from the indecisiveness/scatterdness that we shared with regard to flowers! Yay!!!!! Look forward to seeing the whole thing come together, Miss D!

I love the purple! It is going to be so pretty!
I am doing the same thing with my BM…meaning…they are wearing pink dresses..so they will carry white flowers and I will carry pink.

I can’t wait to see your flowers…they will be really pretty

Lisianthus (pictured in your bouquet and twice in your inspiration board) come in a darker purple as well as the lavender you have shown. They are also a great outdoor summer flower, as they stand up to heat very well.

Ohhh I love both of those bouquets! I had a really hard time with the flowers because they have limited availability in the Cayman Islands. We had to special order everything–ouch.

The purple will look gorgeous!

We are doing hydrangeas, super easy to find in the fall in New England.

I would have gotten married in May if I knew that was the only time in the year that I could stand a chance of getting the peonies I covet so much.

I like the purple and white/ white and purple contrast. I hope it works for you with your florist for you to get what you want.

Dahlias, roses, and hydrangea all come in purple and will all be in season in August…that would make a gorgeous combo!

Omg. I swear you’re like my twin or something! While I’m just starting things out with my blog I have a powerpoint presentation with some of the same ideas in it! the white spider mum bouquet is what I’ve been keeping in the back of my head for my maids because they too will be in dark purple and I want their flowers to pop. I’m leaning towards a bouquet with TONS of dark purple Lisianthus. I don’t want lavender or violet. My colors are Purple (as in grape purple) and silver.
