About Mrs. Mary Jane

Mr. MJ and I are now less than 5 months away from the day we’ll be married, and I’m avoiding The Knot’s planning checklist like the plague. Why? Well… let me give you a little rundown on our (non)wedding planning progress thus far. What follows is a list of what we DON’T know.

Where we’re getting married
This is kind of a biggie, am I right? As in, WE SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW THIS BY NOW! See, originally we were going to do it locally. Then my mom suggested Duluth, Minnesota, about 4 hours from here. But now we’re working on buying a home, and I think perhaps we’ll want to have it closer to home so that my parents (who live across the country and would have traveled directly to Duluth) can see the house while they’re here. Luckily, our chosen venue is a city hall, regardless of where it’s located. We don’t need a reservation 10 months in advance to go to city hall.

What I’ll be wearing
I have had two unsuccessful dress hunts and I’m running out of creativity. Wedding dresses are too fancy for what we’ve envisioned, but I’m not sure what else I would want. I do, however, have one more option (the brown suit) that I’ll be writing about soon. Hopefully I’ll be able to check this big stressor off the list within a few days.

What he’ll be wearing
No clue. We haven’t even picked him out a wedding ring.

How I’ll wear my hair
My hair is pretty short and looks about the same every day. What do you do with THAT? Birdcage veil? Hair flower? Headband? I don’t even know where to start.

What we’ll do after the ceremony
Dinner? Cake? Where? When? We really have no idea.

Where I’ll get my flowers
I might end up taking a trip to the grocery store and plunking down $19.99 for a dozen roses. At least I’m starting to figure out what color(s) I want.

Whether or not we’re going to have professional photo session
When you buy a house, you start to look at each of your dollar bills as sacred. Right now even a few hundred dollars for a couple-session seems debatable when it could better be spent on… say… a dining room set.

A whole mess of other smaller things
Obviously, the above are just the big things. We’re skirting many of the little things by getting married in such an understated way, but things like announcements, shoes, ceremony customization (if possible) and more are still up in the air, too.

*Hangs usually type-A head in shame.*

I can boast that there are a few things on which we’re solid! We’ve got a date. We’ve got my wedding ring (it was a set with my e-ring). We’ve got our parents’ support. And most of all… we’ve got each other. I refuse to get obsessive or demanding about any of the above because I know that when it’s all over, I will be married to my sweetheart. Even if I’m wearing some random brown skirt I’ve had for years, even if I have a bouquet of dandelions from the back yard, and even if our wedding dinner is Papa Johns takeout (dig that garlic butter dip!) and our dessert is cookie dough blizzards from Dairy Queen.

But don’t worry, I really am trying to get all this squared away! Details on each of the above are coming soon to a blog near you! :)

Are you seriously lagging behind in major aspects of your wedding planning? How are you justifying it?

We’re on schedule but I completely understand the dollar bills as sacred! Professional videographer and photographer or appliances?

Yup! We have no baker and no florist and no dinner menu (our caterer said ‘I can do anything - which is too many choices for our little glossy heads to handle). My back up plan (BUP) is to DIY things….we’ll see how far that gets me :)

I completely feel you. For some reason, I can’t get anything related to wedding planning accomplished. What makes it worse is people ask for an update every time you see them. I always feel like a slacker student who hasn’t done her homework. Ugh.

Ummm yeah. Friday is our 6 month mark (also FI’s bday!) and we still don’t have a caterer. Reasoning behind the lag? It will easily be the biggest expenditure and it makes me want to cry to part with most of my budget on food. There. I said it. I wish I didn’t have to feed everyone…

I totally thought we were okay, until you said, “We haven’t even picked him out a wedding ring.” Our wedding is a month after yours, and we haven’t given much thought to either of our rings. Now I’m nervous. :-) I guess I know what I’ll be googling over my lunch break!!

Yeah we are seriously lagging in a few areas….I justify it that I just finished school and now I am jumping into the deep end of the pool to get things done.

I tried to leave this comment on one of your previous dress posts but I dont think it worked for some reason! If you’re still at a loss for what to wear, do check out http://www.unique-vintage.com. They have lots of poufy/prom dresses but if you weed through those there are a couple of cute 40’s-ish dresses that I think would be really classy and stylish for your civil ceremony. And they’re mostly in darker colors so yes, you can and SHOULD wear it again!

(If we get fed up with this wedding planning stuff I will most certainly get the first dress to wear to our city hall elopement :)

I put everything off until the last minute, but somehow it all came together! You’ve still got plenty of time to figure this stuff out!

I am seriously lagging! Can you believe my wedding is in 37 days and I don’t have a caterer yet? I know it’s going to come together, and I’m still making calls and have a backup plan, but … I never meant for this to happen!

I’m sure everything will come together for you!

I’m queen of the procrastinators, so I hear you on avoiding the knot’s checklist. That thing is pure evil!

@Miss Deviled Egg: Ooo, and how about those cheerful little emails they send? “Only 5 months left!” (I KNOW!! I KNOW!)

Feeding each other cookie dough blizzards in lieu of a cake sounds pretty fun to me.

I’m so lagging I don’t even know what I need to be working on and I’m afraid to make a list b/c I might pass out :-/

@Gilneas - Anything involving a cookie dough blizzard is my idea of fun. :D

The knot checklist is evil and I discovered that I think on day 1 of being on the knot. Don’t go without photos. My mom did and says she regrets it. Besides that is art for your walls.

@jennred782 - I have a lot of stuff to say about the photography thing - I promise I’ll discuss it in detail sometime soon.

I lag, then panic, then get some things done majorly fast due to my panic…then lag, panic, etc. It’s a pretty stressful cycle! :-(

Don’t put off planning your location too long! We’re getting married at City Hall in Philadelphia, and had to make an appointment a month in advance. We were at City Hall at 8am on the morning they opened up the next month’s calendar and they were all booked by 9:30am! AND, in order to make an appointment, you had to have already gotten a marriage license. Which meant two trips to City Hall. It was a lot more complicated (and more popular!) than I expected. I know every state/city is different, but just be sure to call ahead and find out the details.

Jenn R - Holy crap! Thanks for freaking me out! (No seriously, thanks a bunch. I never figured we’d have to plan much more than a week in advance, let alone make two trips. Yikes!) My city is a lot smaller than Philadelphia, but it’s still a big enough deal for me to get our stuff settled in advance and avoid missing out on the date we want - JUST IN CASE there is high demand.

No worries, I think 5 months is still plenty of time to figure out the things you listed! When I get overwhelmed with long lists of wedding projects left I try to just focus on ONE thing at a time until I can cross it off.
