The Bout’ Test

April 21st, 2009 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Mascara

As I mentioned previously, I have been considering making the boutonnieres for the groomsmen. I had bought some flowers last week to have around the apartment, and since they are on their last leg, I thought I’d use them to test out my bout-making skills. I had some fake hydrangeas as well from some of our other wedding projects, so I used a stem of the flowers and a leaf to supplement the real button mums. After about 2 minutes, here’s what I came up with.

It works, but I think it needs some more color. I tried adding a fuchsia feather. I’m still not loving it, but it proves that more color is better!

I think I’ll do another trial, next time with purple button mums. Possibly two mums and less hydrangea, with some hypericum berries if I can find some. I’ll leave out the feathers.

What would you do to improve the bouts? Do you think they have potential?

Definite potential! You could try adding ribbon — maybe a mini wrap on the tiny stems? — for more color as well.

maybe we need to plan another meetup so you can teach me! We’re doing all the flowers ourselves and this is exactly what I want my bouts too look like!

That looks really great! I agree, I think if you change out existing button mum for a purple one it will definitely brighten it up a bit.

I like the idea of a pop of color. They are going to look awesome. Maybe wrap the bottom with ribbon? I like the idea of the purple mum as well.

I think it turned out really cute! The extra color from the feather really makes the whole thing seem more colorful.

I had this exact bout for my wedding, except with hypericum berries as well, and the berries really add that pop you are looking for with the brighter, shinier green.

I would suggest the ribbon also but use something that will pop also. I would mix it up and try some with purple mums and green hydrangea and some with green mum and purple hydrangea that way you can see all the options.

I think you are off to a great start! I can’t wait to see the next version! I think you could loose a few of the hydrangea blooms and add some of the other fun things you were thinking about. I wish I had the crafting skills to pull this off!

I think you are on your way to make some amazing bouts. See if you have a local floral shop that sells silk flowers. There should be a larger variety of flowers than your local JoAnns, Ac Moore or Michaels.

I love them! I agree with adding ribbon & maybe one more type of flower, I’ve heard three is the “magic” floral number…good luck!

These have AWESOME potential! I do agree they need more color though. I like Miss Bruschetta’s idea about wrapping the stems in ribbon to add more color that way. I’m thinking about using silk flowers for bouts as well. My brother just got married on Saturday and his real flower bout was a disaster because of all the hugging. The daisies were smashed to pieces and it looked horrible. With silk flowers, that wouldn’t be an issue!
