The Bridesmaid Dress Pick

April 21st, 2009 @ 11:42 am by Mrs. Labrador

And the winner is…

The Jim Hjelm satin strapless ball gown with a “cashmere” color bodice, natural waist, inverted pleated skirt front and back, and side pockets! The skirt color will be “driftwood” to match the guys’ suits.

Style: jh5818

Amanda was able to try it on at the bridal salon we visited after the Running of the Brides. And although they only had one size in stock, she still said (and I quote), “This is my favorite bridesmaid dress ever!” She’s been in a lot of weddings, so that little comment made me feel really good. No girl wants to be “that” bride that ends up on wedding don’t lists for issuing out hideous gowns.

Amanda’s wearing the same color combo as pictured above (cashmere bodice & black skirt). I’m glad we looked at the color samples in the store because the mocha is basically black, so we’re going with the driftwood, which is more light chocolate than it looks online. Hopefully the girls and guys will complement each other. Here’s the main inspiration for the guys’ suits:

I would like to order the dresses all together for a few reasons:

  1. It ensures that the color is identical, because the fabric will come from the same lot.
  2. I can get discounts for ordering more than 4 gowns at once.
  3. Jim Hjelm isn’t found everywhere, so as long as I have the girls’ measurements, I can go order them at one store, instead of having my girls try to find stores on their own. This saves them considerable time.
  4. They all come in at the same time, so we don’t have to worry about who’s gotten theirs and who hasn’t.

I’ll probably set a date to have the gowns ordered and paid for according to how long it takes the store to get them in.

Did you choose your bridesmaid dresses or did your bridesmaids choose them on their own?

I chose 4-5 finalist dresses, and gave my co-MOHs the final decision. I knew they would make the best choice for the group!

That dress is gorgeous! After the wedding the dress could be shortened and make an excellent cocktail/party dress. I would def re-wear that again!

Great choice, Miss Lab!

I selected the color and then let my BMs pick a dress. They all ended up selecting the same one and we ordered them on the day they tried on the styles.

I love Jim Hjelm dresses! So pretty! I chose a style and let my maids pick one of four colors. Luckily, they all chose a different one so my rainbow palette worked out!

Me likey!
How’s the material of the dresses? And you are right that many salons carry JH. :(
I haven’t decided yet how my BM dreses will be. I’m leaning more towards same color and let them choose style.

I will be choosing the bridesmaid dress, but I’ll be getting lots of input from my girls.

I like the pic, it is super classy and elegant!

Good choice! I went shopping with my 2 MOHs and then we let the other girls know the final decision on which dress.

Wow, those make me regret my decision! Because all my maids are out of town I did the same, ordered them all from the same store, just set a date for the girls to get measured by a lot earlier than you actually want to order them!

Picking the dresses was a joint effort. Your BM dress is fab!

I love Jim Hjelm and want to get short Jim Hjelm dresses for my girls. May I ask how much the long dresses were? Or if you know how much the short dresses usually go for? Thanks so much!

Love the two-tone look. I picked out a bridesmaid dress that is very similar, but it is cocktail length.

@MissCamera: That’s what I’m hoping the girls will do!

@Miss Deviled Egg: I really thought about doing that but it was going to be too hard to coordinate between everyone (they’re all spread out). I’ve found that colors can differ ALOT from fabric to fabric and place to place.

@Gerbera: The material is really great quality. The satin is so soft! I wish I could have one for myself, haha!

@Newport Nuptials: I think that’s the way to ultimately go. I just wouldn’t want any surprises from rouge bridesmaids, lol. I did get LOTS of input from my girls though!

@evefisher: The dresses are about $270 online before the discount for multiple orders. But I’m still shopping around before I buy at the place I’m considering.
