About Mrs. Duckling

In order to keep up with the huge list of blogs I read, I use Google Reader. All of the newest posts are delivered straight to my reader, and it’s easy to keep track of them. I hesitated to start Google Reader, but now I love it, aside from the fact than it’s harder to comment all the time now. I’ll often “star” my favorites for inspiration, tutorials, or just useful information. As I went through my “starred items” the other day, I began to notice a certain theme in some of the posts. Lately I’ve just been loving any sort of wooden detail. There is just this rustic charm to using wood slices, branches, and signs throughout the wedding.

Here are some of the wooden details that have caught my attention lately.

It would be so unique to use wood slice platters during your cocktail hour.

Ritzy Bee

The details of this cake are so sweet with the carefully placed branches and birdies sitting atop a simple tree stump.

Green Wedding Shoes

I love birdhouses. I think their charm could make for the perfect escort card table display.

Never can get enough hand painted wooden signs leading the way.

I never would have guessed something as simple as branches with ribbon could be so endearing when carried by a child.

These escort cards are simply adorable. Even better? There is a DIY tutorial!

Even having wood in the accents of a venue adds so much personality to a wedding.

Once Wed

I would normally not say that wood is appetizing, but this cake looks scrumptious!

This picture is from one of the design blogs I read. I could see this organic wooden table being perfect for the lounge at your wedding, and then being reused as your coffee table at home.

And of course, the wooden theme carries beautifully onto paper, whether it be a background, or graphics of trees or branches.

I thought this was an appropriate way to sum up my wood inspiration. Doesn’t Kathryn from Snippet and Ink always have something that just goes perfectly?

What sort of details have been standing out to you lately? Do you ever pick up on a certain theme after awhile?

Anyone know where to get some good wood slices from?

Remember Miss Cherry Pie’s ringbearer? He can probably cut you a slice!

You should check out wooden wedding invitations at Cards of Wood. I love the wood accents too!

Your neighborhood! Keep your eye out since it’s spring now so people will be doing home improvement projects. Some of which may include chopping down trees. Or your local forest preservation? I don’t know what they do with trees that have died and been cut down. Most times they probably get mulched? You might be able to get some decent size trunks? GL!

I agree with Caroline - I had my placecards done by Cards of Wood and they were gorgeous. They even let me fully customize them by giving them my list of names to be printed on as well as the font that I had used for everything else. AND they’re reasonably priced.

I think I’ve seen “wooden” invites before too–look like the information was burned instead of printed with ink. Of course they aren’t cheap either I’m sure. Love the look though! Very much up my alley. I say find someone who would be willing to let you have a log, trunk or even a fallen down tree in the area….maybe? I live in Colorado near the foothills so for me that’s not exactly a hard thing to find ;)

Oh, this post is after my own heart. I just mailed out my wooden invitations yesterday!! I love them so much! And I also had slices of wood cut for serving trays! I actually got them through a seller on etsy after submitting an alchemy request. They turned out great! We’re getting married on a ranch in Jackson Hole, so we’re incorporating all kinds of wood elements into the wedding. (and actually, my photographer has a couple pictures included in that last inspiration board!) How funny!

I was going to suggest reaching out to Mrs. Cherry Pie as well, to see if she has any helpful connections! :-)

Miss Duckling, it’s like you went into my inspiration folder and pulled out all of my pictures :) Apparently we are on the same page with the wood obsession.

I found some of various sizes at Michael’s for some projects last year, you could try there if you can’t find someone to cut down a tree for you :)

I am a farm girl with tons of timber at my disposal! I chose which tree I wanted my cake stand from and sliced me off a piece when we cut it down for fire wood! Then I put lacquer on it! It is beautiful and was very easy to make.

I’m so glad I’m not alone in the wood obsession!

@Caroline, @Courtney Allison: I’ve never seen that site! It is awesome! Do you have pictures of your invites? I’d love to see!

@missomally, @countrybride76: I wish I had timber at my disposal! So does Mr. Ducky since he likes to build furniture. But we are from So Cal so there aren’t many trees I have access to that can be chopped. I may have to look around though.

@countrybride76: Do you have a picture of your cakestand? It sounds awesome!

@Miss Bruschetta, @Indie B: Good idea! I’ll have to go talk to cherry pie now!

@Gerbera: Maybe I can ask some of my neighbors that have big trees….

@missomally: Do you have pictures? I would love to see the invites! Maybe you should upload some inspiration for us all to the gallery since there are a bunch of us that seem to love wood inspiration! :)

Lovin’ the wood! I don’t normally think of myself as a “wood” person, but these touches are adorable! Not too much…just a touch.

You’ve summed up my wedding reception decor almost exactly, although I’m using birch bark vases for my centerpieces. The wood slice with the appetizers looks just like the wood slices I have for my own cocktail hour. I got mine from Michael’s - they’re thin, oval wood slices that are intended for wood burning projects. $6-8 a piece - you can also find them online.

You can also go here and fill out a custom order for wood slices you may want - http://www.rusticwoodworking.com/twigpieces.htm. I contacted the seller and requested tall slices of birch for my head table and she provided me with 8 slices, ranging from 5-9 inches tall, for less than $50. It was beautiful wood and she sanded the tops and bottoms. Contact her to see what specific wood she has available if you have something specific in mind.

One more thing, lol, I couldn’t get ahold of wood slices large enough for my 14″ cakes until I found wood slice stepping stones at my local nursery - they were made of stone but had the appearance of wood.

I was just thinking that if you love birdcages and want to incorporate them into one of your tables…why not use one as your card box. Not the typical wired birdcage but rather the one shown above as the idea for “escort card table”. I think that would be so cute
