In the Favor of Your Presence…

April 22nd, 2009 @ 11:54 am by Mrs. Beagle

This post concerns wedding favors (obviously…). Many people, including myself, seem to think that favors are a waste of money. I didn’t want to invest in a gift for my guests that would be forgotten or thrown away soon after our reception ended. For this reason, as cheesy as it may sound, I wanted our favors to mean something. Initially, I considered donating to a charitable organization, a la Mrs. Lovebug, in lieu of favors. I wanted to make donations to cancer societies, as they have personally affected our mothers. However, I wasn’t sure how our moms would feel about this… I mean I’m sure they would be honored, but I’m not sure they would want that sort of attention drawn to them. So… I continued to brainstorm ideas for meaningful favors. And then, it came to me: Mexican Wedding Cookies. For those of you not familiar with these, they are shortbread-like cookies popular in the Hispanic culture that are made with nuts and covered in powdered sugar. (They are also apparently very similar to cakes/cookies familiar to other cultures.)

They make appearances during holidays, for birthdays, and, you guessed it, at weddings. When I discussed this idea with my FMIL, she loved it and said this was exactly what she had thought of doing for our wedding. :) Instead of baking the cookies, we are going to cheat and order some from a local Mexican bakery (because FMIL heard that they are just not as good if they are baked and then frozen, which is the most logical approach if we were to DIY them). I am very excited that we will be incorporating this very delicious aspect of Mr. B’s culture into our wedding. Now I just need to come up with a creative way of presenting them and I can cross this item off my to-do list!

What are you providing as favors for your guests?

We are giving our guests my Fiance’s and my own favorite cookies… he is having a chocolate chunk and I am doing a greek cookie (I am greek) *Koulourakia* along with a donation to our favorite charity, Pug Hearts, where we got our first pug!

I love your idea about incorporating cultures. We aren’t having a big fat greek wedding but I think they should have some big fat Greek cookies!

Yum! We’re have a cookie bar with a variety of our family’s favorites. I bought some glassine bags that people can tote them home in, if they like.

I’m Mexican & I am probably going to do this to incorporate my culture into my wedding. We are also ordering papel picado (paper streamers) for across the ceiling in lieu of icky tulle & fairy lights (blegh!) …

I would also look into incorporating traditions into the ceremony if you’re open to it. I’m exchanging 13 gold “arras” or coins with my fiance as a symble of our promise to always be there for eachother. We are also having a lasso tied around us in a figure 8 to symbolize our eternal union.

(We’ll obviously explain these in our programs so as not to confuse our many NON-Mexican guests, hehe.)

That’s too funny. My family has always made the same cookies in crescent shapes. I always thought it was a dutch treat!!

My fiance was all born and raised in Mexico. :)
We are actually setting up a ‘cookie buffet’ for our guests and definitely making these as one of the choices for guests to choose from.
We are displaying the cookies in glass cookie jars and providing gift bags for guests to fill up w/ their favorite treats.

Mmmm I LOVE Mexican Wedding cookies! FH and I were going to do herbs, but they are proving to be more expensive than we thought, so we’re probably going to do some sort of cookie as well :)

We’re doing edible favors too. It’s so nice and thoughtful, and like you said — nothing to throw away! Those cookies are great, and I’m sure going the bakery route will be best all around.

@Katya: We haven’t really planned our ceremony out just yet, but this past weekend we talked to my FMIL about incorporating the arras and lasso. She showed us her arras, lasso (we might borrow theirs) & I’m not sure what you call it, but it’s the cushion that the couple kneels on.

We’re doing Mexican wedding cookies as well, along with some Norwegian and Swedish cookies that I have no idea how to spell. My FI is Hispanic and I’m Scandinavian, so we’re blending the cultures with our cookie favor bar. We’ll provide bags for the guests so that they can take home what they like.

@Miss Beagle: the cushion it’s called ‘cojín’. i didn’t know your FI has Mexican roots, but that’s so great! i bet your cookies will be a hit! :) they look yummm, even though i’ve never ate them/or hear about them, but maybe it’s a tradition my family doesn’t have or something…

FI is Mexican and I’m Chinese, so we’re giving Mexican Wedding cookies and fortune cookies in Chinese take out boxes!

@MexicanGirl: I’m not sure about the history/origin of the cookies and I’ve only had them around the holidays. I’ve only seen them at one other wedding I’ve been to.
FI’s family is mainly from the “Valley” area of Texas and I think all his grandparents were actually born and grew up in Mexico.
@redbullfanatic: They are supposed to be very similar to Russian Tea Cakes (if not the exact same thing).

I have been thinking about having these as my favors to add my culture to the mix, my grandma makes the best Mexican wedding cookies! We’re having an Italian themed wedding (we’ve been to Italy and FI is Italian) but I think we’re going to go out of the “theme box” for our favors and do a cookie bar!
